Growing up in north-west London in the 1950s and living alongside a busy freight line, the seed for a fascination with steam was firmly planted in the young Geoff Barker’s head. Later in life he was able to visit Barry Scrapyard and recorded the locos seen there over a seven-year period from 1977 to 1983. He then went back in the early 1990s to photograph every last remaining locomotive. Those holiday stop-offs at the famous scrapyard created a wonderful photographic record of a unique place.Through this selection of striking images and informative captions, Geoff Barker and David Holland celebrate this long-gone but much-cherished scrapyard.

Peter started photographing railways at an early age, mainly concentrating on steam, but he made some visits to Devon in the 1970s, to see the Western Class diesel-hydraulics running along the coast. They were being replaced by Class 50 diesel-electrics at the time. More time was spent in Devon in the 1970s and early 1980s photographing preserved railways as well as the modern scene, and an Easter visit to Goodrington became a regular event for several years. The 1986 West of England resignalling scheme provided a good reason for a further series of visits to Devon to record the mechanical signal boxes, semaphore signalling and associated equipment before it all disappeared. The producers of ‘extra-scribal’ texts often operated in the margins of the palatial and administrative centers of their day. They wrote on and marked atypical writing media: not clay tablets or papyrus but ostraca, stone, and vessels. Focusing on the Bronze Age eastern Mediterranean and Aegean, regions rich in scripts and languages, this volume highlights similarities and differences in writing and marking practices across time and place. Contributors come from the fields of Egyptology, Hittitology, Ancient Near Eastern archaeology, Aegean prehistory, Cypriot archaeology, and Information Sciences, applying a range of theoretical models to the subject matter. Eastern National operated right across the county, Daimlers and Leylands acquired from Westcliff-on-Sea Motor Services in 1955 and Guy Arabs taken over with Moore Brothers business in 1963 added variety to its fleet of Bristol-built buses.
