Po porážce německých armád ve Francii v srpnu 1944 se zdálo, že konec druhé světové války je již na dosah ruky a že vítězným angloamerickým vojskům nemůže nic zabránit v postupu do Německa. Složitá zásobovací situace spojeneckých armád, vzdalujících se rychle od přístavů v Normandii, však neumožňovala další útok na široké frontě a nutila spojenecké velení k soustředění sil pouze na jediném směru.
