Zjistil, že je příliš připoután ke své identitě buddhistického mnicha, aby dokázal svléknout své roucho nebo nocovat na holé zemi. Rychle mu ale došly peníze, takže nezbylo než doopravdy žít jako potulný žebrák. Poměrně brzy smrtelně onemocněl po otravě jídlem - a jeho pouť dospěla k překvapivému vyústění. Dosavadním meditačním výcvikem byl teoreticky připraven na setkání se smrtí a náhle měl příležitost svou přípravu reálně prověřit. Předpisy buddhistickým mnichům zakazují referovat o jejich duchovní úrovni i vlastních zkušenostech. Tváří v tvář smrti se ale Mingyur Rinpočhe rozhodl své zážitky, použité meditační postupy i zcela osobní duchovní prožitky téměř deníkovou formou zveřejnit. Můžeme se tedy v jistém smyslu poprvé v dějinách buddhismu seznámit s přímým osobním svědectvím vysoce respektovaného mnicha, a to bez iluzí a bez cenzury. To dělá z této knihy zcela výjimečnou událost.
