Autor: James Herriot, vlastním jménem James Alfred Wight, byl britský spisovatel a veterinář. Po ukončení studia veterinární školy v Glasgow se v roce 1940 odstěhoval do Yorkshiru, kde vykonával veterinářskou praxi – léčil hospodářská zvířata, ale i menší zvířata, jako psy a kočky. Za druhé světové války Herriot sloužil v Britském královském letectvu. Proslavil se hlavně svými veterinárními příběhy inspirovanými jeho skutečným životem. Interpret: Ondřej Novák, rodák z Hradce Králové sbíral divadelní zkušenosti od šesti let v dramatickém kroužku, později v Divadélku Jesličky nebo Klicperově divadle, které úspěšně zúročil při přijímacích zkouškách na Divadelní fakultu JAMU. Po absolutoriu činoherního herectví se stal členem činohry Národního divadla Brno, kde strávil více než 13 sezón. Na jevišti brněnského Mahenova divadla se objevoval například v rolích Kalafuny, Figara, Danceny nebo Ježibaby v Perníkové chaloupce. Kromě divadla se věnoval i dabingu, natáčení reklamních rozhlasových i TV spotů a moderování odpolední show v rádiu Kisshády, kde byl i několik let programovým ředitelem nebo kreativním manažerem. Dnes je Ondřej Novák hercem a moderátorem na volné noze, hlasem pořadu Autosalon, namlouvá a vymýšlí reklamy do rádií, televize a na internet. Dále také namlouvá audioknihy a komentáře, zajímá se o marketing, copywriting a každý večer se snaží číst pohádky svým dětem. Audiokniha: Četba z jedné z mnoha knih populárního britského spisovatele. James Herriot vlastním jménem James Alfred Wight, přáteli zvaný Alf, byl populární britský veterinář a spisovatel, autor mnoha knih ze života zvěrolékaře. Narodil se v roce 1916 v anglickém Sunderlandu, v době, kdy už rodina bydlela ve skotském Glasgow. Ve Skotsku v 23 letech ukončil veterinární školu a krátce poté se odstěhoval do Yorkshiru, kde pak po celý život vykonával v městě Thirlby zvěrolékařskou praxi a kde je dnes v jeho původní ordinaci muzeum Svět Jamese Herriota. V roce 1941 se oženil s Joan Catherine Anderson Danburyovou, postupně se jim narodily dvě děti, James Alexandr (1942), který později přebral otcovu veterinární praxi, a dcera Rosemary (1947), která se stala lékařkou. James Herriot napsal sérii knih, ve kterých zvěčnil mnoho komických příhod ze své veterinární praxe. Prvotina mu vyšla až v 50 letech. Pod pseudonymem (James Herriot byl skotský fotbalový brankář) psal kvůli zákonu, který zakazoval veterinářům podobnou reklamu. Jeho knihy byly velice populární nejen ve Velké Británii a USA, ale byly přeloženy do mnoha jazyků a dočkaly se i filmového zpracování a devadesátidílného seriálu, v němž hrál Herriota Christopher Timothy. Jeho knihy byly přeloženy i do češtiny, mezi nejznámější patří To by se zvěrolékaři stát nemělo, Zvěrolékař a psí historky, Zvěrolékař a kočičí historky, Zvěrolékař na blatech nebo Veterinář v chomoutu. V několika knihách, např. Zvěrolékař mezi nebem a zemí, se Herriot vrátil i ke své válečné službě u Britského královského letectva v roce 1942. James Herriot zemřel na rakovinu v roce 1995, v 78 letech, ve svém domě v Thirlby. Od roku 2009 jezdí ze Sunderlandu do Londýna vlak, který nese jeho jméno.

Psi se stávali častými hrdiny jeho příběhů, které čtenářsky patřily k těm nejúspěšnějším. Protože byly rozptýleny v několika knihách, sebral je Herriot později do jednoho souboru.
