Román publikovaný v roce 1957 vznikl koncem čtyřicátých let v sérii kroužkových sešitů, které si Kerouac vzal na cesty. Písmo na zadní vazbě této kolekce pochází z jednoho takového poznámkového bloku, který byl napsán v roce 1950. V příspěvku Kerouac píše o tom, že se nevidí jako spisovatel, ale jako "aranžér", který se zaměřuje především na vnitřní hudbu, takt a rytmus, který existuje uvnitř nás všech. Kerouacova metoda psaní, inspirovaná jazzovými osobnostmi Charliem Parkerem, Dizzym Gillespiem a Theloniousem Monkem, se zaměřila na myšlenku dechu. Často zdánlivě improvizovaná slova odděloval dlouhými spojovacími čárkami, úplně eliminoval periody a omezil svojí revizi. Při společném čtení připomínají tyto přerušované fráze jazzové licky, které nabývají hudební kadence. Hudba hraje důležitou roli také v zápletce knihy Na cestě. Hlavní postavy Sal Paradise (Kerouacovo alter ego) a Dean Moriarty (zastupující Neala Cassadyho) jsou zobrazování jako nadšenci jazzu/bebopu, opakovaně líčí poslech konkrétních nahrávek a chodí do hudebních klubů, aby si poslechli své oblíbené skladby. V poslední době došlo k přílivu filmů inspirovaných Kerouacem a jeho kolegy z beatové generace. Samostatný film Na cestě vznikl v roce 2012, režiroval jej Walter Salles a produkoval Francis Ford Coppola. Je smutné, že právě rokenrolový životní styl, který tolik ovlivnil jeho psaní a dílo budoucích umělců, nakonec ukončil Kerouacův život.
