Identifikace autora s aktérem příběhu je důležitá, protože signalizuje, že uvnitř „reálného“ děje se odvíjí ještě jiný „příběh“, který neustále obkružuje: k otázce, jaké je poslání poezie v nesrozumitelném katastrofickém moderní světě. Holan ví o kráse utkvění v oné bezčasovosti, ale smysl básnictví nalézá na opačném pólu, na pólu nezajištěnosti, tedy tragiky.
