Všechny příhody hrdinů byly jako dočasně skrytá informace otištěny v autorově podvědomí, až jednoho dne věty začaly samy sestavovat obrazy, rodily se a křísily minulost. Kurkul vypráví příběh autorova praděda a prabáby, kteří žili na začátku minulého století ve Slobodské Ukrajině.Maxim Butčenko je novinář a spisovatel pocházející z Luhanské oblasti, autor knih o ozbrojeném konfliktu na východní Ukrajině. Narodil se roku 1977 ve městečku Roveňki (Luganská oblast, Donbas, Ukrajina). Od roku 1996 pracoval v dole, později jako důlní mistr. Pak se stal pomocníkem vedoucího jednoho z dolů na Donbase. Celkově v donbaských šachtách pracoval okolo dvanácti let. V roce 2011 absolvoval studium žurnalistiky a pracoval v několika ukrajinských médiích.
