V současné době je šivejština jedinou ústní variantou mandžuštiny, která se ve skutečnosti užívá. S 20 000 až 30 000 mluvčích je také nejrozšířenějším mluveným tunguzským jazykem. Národ Šive, který žije na severozápadní hranici dnešního Sin-ťiangu, ujgurské autonomní provincie Číny, je tvořen potomky posádky mužů mandžuské armády z 18. století, kteří sem byli posláni poté, co byla oblast obsazena Mandžuy, kteří měli za úkol střežit nově zřízenou hranici mezi Mandžuskou říší a Ruskem. Jakožto vojáci cizí armády zůstali izolováni od domorodého tureckého a mongolského národa, což vyústilo v až zázračné zachování jazyka.
