Policejně byl zakázán a ještě v roce 1960 se nakladatelství Penguin Books ocitlo na lavici obžalovaných, když knihu vydalo. V proslulém soudním procesu, v němž na obranu Lawrencova románu vystoupila řada věhlasných spisovatelů a literárních vědců, byl román shledán nevinným a zbaven nařčení z pornografie. Je pravda, že autor líčí erotické scény s velkou otevřeností. Nejsou však samoúčelné. Jde o společenský román o lidských vztazích na přelomu dvou epoch, s důrazem na hluboký a pravdivý erotický vztah mezi mužem a ženou, který má vliv na emancipaci člověka a společnosti. Toto dílo v konečném důsledku autora nejvíce proslavilo a stalo se námětem řady filmů a TV inscenací (1955 – film Francie, 1981 koprodukční film Velká Británie, Francie, Německo, 1998 dvoudílný film ČT v režii Viktora Polesného, 2006 koprodukční film Belgie, Francie, 2015 britský TV film).
