Z japonštiny přeložila Libuše Boháčková Mlčení japonského spisovatele Šúsakua Endóa (1923–1996) je drsný a zároveň poetický i myšlenkově bohatý příběh o zániku křesťanské misie v Japonsku v 17. století. Téma, které o něco dříve zpracoval i český spisovatel Jaroslav Durych v rozsáhlé epopeji Služebníci neužiteční, Endó pojal z neobvyklé perspektivy japonského katolického křesťana. Kniha sleduje cestu evropského jezuitského kněze, který se se svým spolubratrem vydává na beznadějnou misijní výpravu, je zajat, vězněn, nakonec veřejně odpadne od víry, když tak jako mnozí další šlápne na Kristův obraz. Učiní to ani ne tak z vlastní slabosti, byť tu si stále bolestněji uvědomuje, ale hlavně proto, že kvůli němu jsou mučeni a zabíjeni japonští věřící, ti pevní i ti, kteří již podlehli slabosti a Krista zapřeli. Nakonec se mu zjeví živá tvář Kristova, kterou celý život hledal, v neumělém a sešlapaném obličeji na desce, na kterou šlapaly a budou šlapat dál tisíce prostých věřících nucených křesťanství opustit. Dochází poznání v té největší poníženosti a naprosté bezmoci, která zároveň neúprosně odhalila povrchnost jeho dosavadní víry a představ o životě.
