Na vlastní kůži zažívá bídu irských obyvatel Belfastu, nespravedlnost, jíž dennodenně čelí. Zamiluje si Severní Irsko, zamiluje si uhelnými zplodinami a vlhkostí prosáklý Belfast, v němž byl vřele přijat muži i ženami, lidmi, kteří se rozhodli proti britskému útlaku bojovat tichým vzdorem i zbraněmi. V roce 2005 vydal Sorj Chalandon svůj první román Malý Bonzík (Le Petit Bonzi), o rok později Slib (Une promesse), za nějž získal cenu Médicis. Při psaní třetího románu Můj zrádce (Mon traître, 2008) se poprvé věnoval politickému tématu. Inspiroval se třiceti lety reportáží z Irska a ze Severního Irska a svým přátelstvím s Denisem Donaldsonem, bojovníkem IRA a šéfem její politické odnože, strany Sinn Féin. Denis se v prosinci 2005 přiznal, že republikánskou kauzu zradil. A protože šlo o příběh velice osobní, z novináře se v příběhu stal pařížský houslař a z Denise Donaldosna Tyron Meehan. Můj zrádce se dočkal i úspěšného divadelního zpracování. V knize Legenda o našich otcích (La Légende de nos peres, 2009) pátrá autor v individuální a kolektivní paměti po příbězích odporu z období druhé světové války. V literárním podzimu roku 2011 způsobil Chalandon velký rozruch románem Návrat do Killybegs (Retour a Killybegs), později ověnčeným Velkou cenou Francouzské akademie. Autor se v něm vrací k příběhu Tyrona Meehana, tentokrát vyprávěnému z jeho pohledu, tedy z pohledu zrádce. V roce 2013 vydal autor román Čtvrtá zeď (Le quatrieme mur, česky vyjde v Argu), za nějž získal Goncourtovu cenu gymnazistů. Jeho zatím poslední román Povolání otce (Profession du pere) vyšel v srpnu 2015. Uhrančivá síla textů Sorje Chalandona vyvěrá nepochybně z toho, že autor do svých knih promítá bezprostřední zkušenosti z reportážních cest do neklidných koutů zeměkoule. Vydání knihy podpořil Centre National du Livre.
