Wild Isles - Alastair Fothergill, Patrick Barkham

This beautifully illustrated overview of the wildlife of the British Isles showcases the diversity of our plant and animal life.Wild Isles is a celebration of the wildlife found on a relatively modest collection of islands positioned at a latitude so northerly to be unattractive to many animals and plants. Despite these unpromising foundations, the islands of Britain and Ireland, together with more than 6,000 lesser islets that make up our archipelago, contain some of the most diverse, beautiful and wildlife-rich landscapes and seas on our planet. This book will explore the fascinating relationships within and between species who make their home on our beautiful isles. Each chapter focuses on a particular kind of wild space. Britain and Ireland are dominated by a wide variety of grasslands from lowland water meadows to upland moors, and we will see how these human-shaped, semi-natural landscapes thrum with insect, bird and mammal life. Life requires water to flourish, and streams and rivers carry freshwater through our landscape, creating unique ecosystems and interrelations within and beside these waters, which are revealed in a third section. While Britain and Ireland’s woodlands are comparatively thin on the ground compared with most of continental Europe, we will see some of the forests and trees that remain are unusually ancient and, great repositories of life. Finally, of course, we are surrounded by sea, and our position on the continental shelf before it plunges into the depths of the Atlantic Ocean gives rise to an often overlooked plenty of marine life. A glorious richness divided into five breathtaking sections.

The Wild Isles - Patrick Barkham

The very best of British and Irish nature writing selected by the natural history writer Patrick Barkham. The landscapes of Britain and Ireland, together with the creatures and plants that inhabit them, have penetrated deep in our collective imagination. From Gilbert White and Dorothy Wordsworth to Laurie Lee and Nan Shepherd, literature inspired by the natural world has become an integral part of our shared identity, and shaped our relationship with the islands we call home.In The Wild Isles, Patrick Barkham has gathered together a wide array of the very best of British and Irish nature writing, characterized by an arresting diversity of moods and voices. His choices are arranged under themes that range from birds, woods and coastlines to childhood, the seasons and urban nature, and juxtapose extracts from much-loved classics with passages by contemporary writers such as Robert Macfarlane, James Rebanks and Helen Macdonald. Here the reader will find joyful celebrations of landscape and the wildlife it nurtures, probing explorations of the environmental problems facing us today, as well as the fresh and vital perspectives of writers from underrepresented backgrounds. ''If British and Irish nature writing is to grow and endure,'' writes Barkham in his introduction, ''it must be diverse, complex, multi-faceted and dynamic, and relevant to everyone who lives on this land.''Encompassing the bleak heights of the Cairngorms, the ancient woodlands of Essex, the storm-lashed islands of Ireland''s west coast and the lush fields of Devon, The Wild Isles highlights nature''s capacity to terrify and to delight, to soothe and to heal, to surprise, inspire and bring wonder.

BEST BOOK OF 2023 ACCORDING TO THE NEWSTATESMAN AND OBSERVER''The Swimmer is a wonderful, original achievement; teeming with stories, glittering with images, and experimental in form and tone'' Robert MacfarlaneRoger Deakin, author of the immortal Waterlog, was a man of many parts: maverick ad-man, cider-maker, teacher, environmentalist, music promoter and filmmaker. Into The Whispering Wild - Hannah Dawn Gold

Sometimes when things should be straightforward, they're just not. When Hannah sets out to move house, the process falls apart repeatedly, facing her with a stark question what does she really want? The prospect of homelessness is a looming reality that brings a lifetime's worth of fears to the fore. Yet behind it all, is the constant, subtle sense of an indefinable 'something' important, lost but almost within reach. The wild world is whispering and asking What if there's a better way? Her conversation with the wild begins. With a young puppy and an inexplicable sense of hope and opportunity, she returns eventually to the one place to which she has always felt connected, the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall. Maybe the place will bring her home. The death of her mother adds further turmoil and grief. Seeking refuge in a caravan with her dog, she turns to the wild for clarity. There on the Lizard, on the South-West coast, in the magical landscape that called to her and spoke of home, she rediscovers the power of the wild and our ancient relationship with it. Hannah embarks upon an unexpected journey of reclaiming the inner self she had almost forgotten. Amid winter storms and soft sea mists, through every nuance of the seasons, she immerses herself in the wild and it shows the way back to an ancestral awareness of the inner nomad and settler within us all. Into the Whispering Wild is a true story, a raw but hopeful account of how our relationship with the wild is vital to our inner strength and ability to navigate life’s changes. Powerful yet gentle, this honest account of one woman’s journey into the meaning of home is a life-affirming tale of love, hope and determination. Recollections of Oscar Wilde - Charles Ricketts

Recollections of Oscar Wilde is one of the most evocative and charming texts ever written about Wilde and the circles he moved in.Charles Ricketts (1866-1931), painter, illustrator, theatrical designer and publisher, was one of Wilde’s closest friends; he also worked on stage productions and books with Wilde. He later set up his own, hugely influential presses. Shortly before he died he finally wrote this account of his friendship with Wilde, partly as an imagined conversation with a fictitious French writer, Jean Paul Raymond. The memoir was printed in 1932 at the Nonesuch Press by one of the great book designers of the following generation, Francis Meynell. Only 800 copies were published. This edition reproduces the original design exactly, including the spectacular gold and cream cover based by Ricketts on his work for Wilde’s Salomé.An afterword by Matthew Sturgis puts the work in the context of the 1880’s and 1890’s and Wilde’s astonishing life.

Will to Wild - Shelby Stanger

Embrace adventures both big and small and pursue your wild ideas with this “profoundly inspiring and laugh-out-loud funny” (Jaimal Yogis, author of The Fear Project) guidebook from seasoned adventurer and podcaster Shelby Stanger. Will to Wild is an instruction manual to adventure. Your guide: enthusiastic outdoorswoman Shelby Stanger. Shelby has been teaching folks how to leap into the unknown since she taught her first surf class over twenty years ago. Over the years, she watched many of her students quit their jobs, end dysfunctional relationships, and move across the country for a healthier work-life balance—all after spending a bit of time in nature. Shelby marveled at the phenomenon. Being outside was changing the lives of her students, her peers, and herself. Shelby was so intrigued, she began to tell their stories, first as a writer and journalist, then as a podcast host for Wild Ideas Worth Living, REI Co-op Studio’s flagship podcast. With her first book, Will to Wild, Shelby shares all she’s witnessed and learned in her years covering adventurers. It’s the book she wishes she’d had when she’d first felt the urge to leap from familiar to wild terrain. The one that takes you step-by-step from the first inkling of inspiration for your own wild idea through fear and self-doubt and on to the finish line. In these pages, discover stories with practical tips and tactics from world-famous rock climbers and ultra-runners to longtime thru-hikers, surfers, and desk jockeys who’ve figured out how to get off the clock, and even a suburban mom who started teaching women to scale frozen waterfalls in her mid-fifties. Along with Shelby’s stories, they show you how to get unstuck, how to pay attention to “trail signs” that point you toward your adventure, how to face your fears, and what to do when everything goes haywire (which will likely never happen, never fear!). With Shelby’s characteristic strength and vulnerability, Will to Wild “is the ultimate guide for anyone looking to try something new” (Captain Liz Clark, author of Swell) and encourages you to break out of your comfort zones, get out into nature, and bring your own wild ideas to life. Whether you’re already an adventure junkie or someone who’s never set up a tent, there’s something inside these pages for you.

WINNER OF THE ORION BOOK AWARD Part travelogue, part manifesto for wildness as an essential character of life, Wild is a one-of-a-kind book from a one-of-a-kind author''Undefinable, untameable, profound and extraordinary'' Observer''A masterpiece'' Maria Popova_________________________''I took seven years over this work, spent all I had, my time, money and energy. Part of the journey was a green riot and part a deathly bleakness. I got ill, I got well. I went to the freedom fighters of West Papua and sang my head off in their highlands. I met cannibals infinitely kinder and more trustworthy than the murderous missionaries who evangelize them. I found a paradox of wildness in the glinting softness of its charisma, for what is savage is in the deepest sense gentle and what is wild is kind. In the end - a strangely sweet result - I came back to a wild home.''Wild describes an extraordinary odyssey, courageous and sometimes dangerous. Call of the Wild & White Fang - Jack London

With an Introduction and Notes by Lionel Kelly, University of Reading. The Call of the Wild (1903) and White Fang (1906) are world famous animal stories. Set in Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush of the late 1890s, The Call of the Wild is about Buck, the magnificent cross-bred offspring of a St Bernard and a Scottish Collie. Stolen from his pampered life on a Californian estate and shipped to the Klondike to work as a sledge dog, he triumphs over his circumstances and becomes the leader of a wolf pack. The story records the ''decivilisation'' of Buck as he answers ''the call of the wild'', an inherent memory of primeval origins to which he instinctively responds. In contrast, White Fang relates the tale of a wolf born and bred in the wild which is civilised by the master he comes to trust and love. The brutal world of the Klondike miners and their dogs is brilliantly evoked and Jack London''s rendering of the sentient life of Buck and White Fang as they confront their destiny is enthralling and convincing. The deeper resonance of these stories derives from the author''s use of the myth of the hero who survives by strength and courage, a powerful myth that still appeals to our collective unconscious.

Hallward becomes fitfully obsessed with capturing Dorian’s remarkable beauty, confessing as much to his friend Lord Henry Wotton. Wotton counters, arguing that Hallward''s portrait is an unparalleled masterpiece. After his final sitting, in an impulsive fit of despair over losing his vitality to the ravages of time, Dorian pledges his soul, pleading that his portrait age and fade in exchange for Dorian''s eternal youth. What follows is an unsettling descent into decadence, sensualism, murderous secrecy, and tragedy as the portrait supernaturally begins to reflect Dorian''s spiritual and moral deterioration while his outward physical appearance remains unchanged. The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde is part of a four-volume collection that includes Bram Stoker''s Dracula, Dante''s Inferno, and a volume of Edgar Allan Poe''s best-known short stories.

Alastair Gordon – Quodlibet - Alastair Gordon, Julia Lucero, Jorella Andrews

Alastair Gordon (b.1978, Edinburgh), is an artist based in London. This, the first major monograph of the artist’s career, includes over 160 paintings, drawings, and documentational photographs, along with notes by Gordon himself. The book introduces this accomplished and engaging new voice in British painting.Gordon’s paintings bring the historic languages of genre painting and the quodlibet into a contemporary discourse that pushes the boundaries of realism, figuration, and illusionism to focus on everyday moments. His work often elevates seemingly ordinary objects––feathers, matchsticks, postcards––allowing them to speak to wider concerns of beauty, truth, life, and death. The documented works, produced between 2012 and 2023, include paintings made in oil or acrylic on MDF, wood, ‘found’ wood, gesso panel, paper, canvas, and occasionally linen. Each is distinctive for its style and for the recurring motifs Gordon selects such as masking tape, paper ephemera, and repeated, subtly different studies of the same subject. Gordon’s texts describe how objects found mud larking on the banks of the River Thames, shoes from the London City Mission, and rags and papers discarded from art students’ studios have been depicted in paintings, incorporating the histories and stories of each item (and each person) into his work. The book also features recent works influenced by rural landscapes and parkland. An introduction by Julia Lucero, Associate Director of Nahmad Projects, London, emphasizes the importance of nature and of meditation within Gordon’s practice. Specifically, Lucero brings out the idea of the "axis mundi, that metaphysical and mystical connecting point where heaven meets Earth". She explores the significance of quodlibet, a seventeenth-century trompe-l’oeil painting technique that Gordon favors, rendering brushstrokes invisible and affording everyday objects new significance, even "profound value". Humble objects such as a matchstick or paper airplane might be elevated to the realms of the divine. An essay by Jorella Andrews, Professor of Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, University of London, describes the influence of Gordon’s time on a research residency in the former studio of Paul Cézanne at Les Lauves on the outskirts of Aix-en-Provence. His experiences there proved pivotal to the direction of his practice, in which both the "visual misdirection" of quodlibet and the qualities of wood have become central. Andrews brings art historical texts and works of art into relation with Gordon’s paintings, making comparisons between subject, form, and approach. Andrews’ text further details the recent synthesis of two sides of Gordon’s work: precise illusionism combined with looser observations made in the natural landscape.Edited by Alastair Gordon Studio, designed by Herman Lelie, printed by EBS Verona and published in 2023 by Anomie Publishing, London, the publication has been generously supported by Howard and Roberta Ahmanson through Fieldstead and Company.

Believe Nothing until It Is Officially Denied - Cockburn Patrick

Radical journalist Claud Cockburn fought successfully against the political and media establishment, writing for publications as varied as The Times and Private Eye. To Graham Greene, he was the greatest journalist of the twentieth century.Born in China in 1904 and educated alongside Evelyn Waugh, Cockburn launched into a stellar career as a Times correspondent, first in Berlin, then New York, interviewing Al Capone in Chicago, and finally Washington. He resigned in 1932 to start The Week, an anti-Nazi and anti-establishment newsletter with an influence out of all proportion to its circulation. British officials were horrified by the scoops he published. These included stories on the political influence of German appeasers – the Cliveden Set – in the British elite and the previously suppressed news of Edward VIII’s abdication.Cockburn wrote dispatches while fighting in the Spanish Civil War. In Spain, he helped W. H. Auden and clashed with George Orwell. Claud’s private life, too, was eventful. He was married three times, once to Jean Ross, the model for Christopher Isherwood’s Sally Bowles.Patrick Cockburn, himself an international journalist, chronicles his father Claud’s lifelong dedication to a guerrilla campaign against the powerful on behalf of the powerless. It is a biography for today’s age, in which journalism is frequently suppressed, overshadowed, undervalued, and corrupted
