Nicméně bojovým křtem prošla stíhačka tohoto typu již znatelně dříve, a to v evropské operační oblasti. Zde působily letouny dalšího významného uživatele stíhaček F4F, britského palubního letectva (Air Branch, obvykle nazývané Fleet Air Arm). Rovněž u FAA si stíhačky, nesoucí zprvu britské označení Martlet (označení Wildcat bylo Brity používáno až od roku 1944), získaly velmi vysoké ocenění. V říjnu 1941 je admiralita dokonce označila za prozatím nejlepší dostupné námořní stíhací letouny. V evropské operační oblasti, pokud do ní zahrneme také rozsáhlé dálavy Atlantského oceánu, ovšem podstoupily své úvodní ostré nasazení také Grummany F4F-3 a F4F-3A letectva US Navy. Stalo se tak v rámci plaveb amerických letadlových lodí na ochranu neutrality, což nebylo ničím jiným, než nasazením plavidel US Navy proti německým ponorkám.
