Whitethroat - Henry James
The third book in the DI Nicholas Lowry series, for fans of Peter James and Stuart Macbride. It''s November 1983 in Essex and there are reasons to be cheerful. Uptown Girl is sitting pretty at the top of the charts, Risky Business is raking it in at the box office, and there are now four channels on the telly. However, social tensions are beginning to bubble beneath the surface: Mrs Thatcher has embarked on her second controversial term, and the situation in Northern Ireland is ever-escalating.Yet in the garrison town of Colchester, it''s another deadly standoff that is hogging the headlines. The body of a nineteen-year-old Lance Corporal has been discovered on the local High Street, the result of what appears to be a bizarre, chivalrous duel. It seems he was the victim of a doomed army love triangle. As such, the military police are wishing to keep the matter confined within military ranks. This is all just fine, as far as Colchester CID is concerned. They have enough on their plate as is: with DI Nick Lowry in a tailspin following the breakdown of his marriage, WPC Jane Gabriel exasperated by the male-favoured system, Detective Daniel Kenton relying on substance abuse to quieten his demons from his last case; and their boss, DCS Sparks, shortly to become a first-time father at 55.However, it is not long before the blood from the duel runs into civilian police affairs, and the trail presents CID with a local rogues'' gallery. A savvy entrepreneur. A wayward skinhead. A member of the landed gentry. And a shadowy Mauritian travel agent with a chilling reputation. Soon, they will discover, a real estate deal, a racist, and the town''s Robin Hood pub hold the key to the killing...

Henry James Comes Home - Peter Brooks
In this enthralling re-creation of American novelist Henry James'' famous ten-month trip around the United States, lauded critic Peter Brooks brings to life both the literary giant and America in its Gilded Age.In 1904, after two decades of living and travelling abroad, Henry James returned to the United States to discover a world drastically different from the one he had left behind. Suddenly, the future of the world seemed to be in his native land, which he had once considered provincial, lacking in nourishment for the novelist. James thus set forth to refamiliarize himself with the United States, travelling the breadth of the land and exercising his acute powers of observation to document all that he saw. James''s ten-month journey across America and its product, the ethnographic work The American Scene, are the focus of Henry James Comes Home, scholar and literary critic Peter Brooks’s dazzling follow-up to his book Henry James Goes to Paris. Brooks combines biography and criticism to recreate James''s American journey, tracing his travels around New England, down south to Florida, across the Midwest, up the coast of California, and eventually to Seattle and Portland. For James, being American was "a complex fate," and Brooks shows how James''s keen remarks on rampant materialism and the challenges at the heart of democracy are still of enduring relevance to us in this day.

Daisy Miller and The Turn of the Screw - Henry James
The Penguin English Library Edition of Daisy Miller and The Turn of the Screw by Henry James"I''m a fearful, frightful flirt! Did you ever hear of a nice girl that was not?"This edition contains two of Henry James''s most popular short works. Travelling in Europe with her family, Daisy Miller, an exquisitely beautiful young American woman, presents her fellow-countryman Winterbourne with a dilemma he cannot resolve. Is she deliberately flouting social convention in the outspoken way she talks and acts, or is she simply ignorant of those conventions? In Daisy Miller Henry James created his first great portrait of the enigmatic and dangerously independent American woman, a figure who would come to dominate his later masterpieces.Oscar Wilde called James''s chilling The Turn of the Screw ''a most wonderful, lurid poisonous little tale''. It tells of a young governess sent to a country house to take charge of two orphans, Miles and Flora. Unsettled by a sense of intense evil within the houses, she soon becomes obsessed with the belief that malevolent forces are stalking the children in her care. The Penguin English Library - 100 editions of the best fiction in English, from the eighteenth century and the very first novels to the beginning of the First World War.

On Writers and Writing - Henry James, Michael Gorra
A new selection of Henry James''s essays on the art of writing, from his famous essay "The Art of Fiction" to pieces on George Eliot, Ivan Turgenev, Honoré de Balzac, and others. Witty, erudite, and passionate, James''s essays are a delight for any lover of the written word.Best known as a master novelist, Henry James was also an incisive critic whose essays on the novel had as profound an influence on its development as did his fiction. Here, Pulitzer-finalist Michael Gorra, author of Portrait of a Novel: Henry James and the Making of an American Masterpiece, gathers some of the most virtuosic essays from across fifty years of James’s career. From his landmark essay “The Art of Fiction,” an exhilarating treatise on the complexity of literary form, to “The Lesson of Balzac,” a tender portrait of one of James’s greatest touchstones, to career-defining assessments of writers such as George Eliot and Ivan Turgenev, James reveals himself as a passionate and sensitive reader, one whose unerring ability to locate the currents within Anglophone literature was matched only by his uncommon prescience regarding its future. Slyly humorous and unabashedly opinionated, On Writers and Writing is a compelling artistic biography of a writer at his cogent and stylish best.

Washington Square - Henry James
Henry James''s classic tale of romance in urban nineteenth-century America, Washington Square is edited with an introduction and notes by Martha Banta in Penguin Classics. When timid and plain Catherine Sloper is courted by the dashing and determined Morris Townsend, her father, convinced that the young man is nothing more than a fortune-hunter, delivers an ultimatum: break off her engagement, or be stripped of her inheritance. Torn between her desire to win her father''s love and approval and her passion for the only man who has ever declared his love for her, Catherine faces an agonising dilemma, and becomes all too aware of the restrictions that others seek to place on her freedom. James''s masterly novel deftly interweaves the public and private faces of nineteenth-century New York society; it is also a deeply moving study of innocence destroyed. This edition of Washington Square includes a chronology, suggested further reading, notes and an introduction discussing the novel''s lasting influence and James''s depiction of the quiet strength of his heroine.Henry James (1843-1916) son of a prominent theologian, and brother to the philosopher William James, was one of the most celebrated novelists of the fin-de-siècle. The Birthplace - Henry James
The Birthplace is a short story by Henry James that was first released in 1903 in his anthology. The tale shows James's doubts regarding Shakespeare's authorship and is a sharp satire on the excesses of bardolatry. The story also depicts a characteristically imaginative Jamesian protagonist creating another reality in his presentation on Bard's purported childhood activities, which goes beyond the specific scholarly topic. Morris Gedge receives a favorable offer to take on the role of custodian of Stratford-on-Shakespeare Avon's residence. James twice used Shakespeare's name in his notebooks as he was drafting the novel, so even though his name is not mentioned in the story, to Whom "the highest Mecca of the English-speaking people" is dedicated is obvious. After being appointed the custodian, Morris starts to question the explanations he is made to provide to visitors. He begins to qualify and fumble through his speech. His wife is distressed by this, and the owners of the temple issue a warning. He gives a funny lecture about how Shakespeare the child played around the house in the story's concluding scene. Of course, tourist revenue grows and Gedge gets paid more.

The Beast in the Jungle & Other Tales - Henry James
''James''s tales can be traps and ruses; they can also be complex self-descriptions in which his own fears and desires have full reign''Frances Wilson, from her Preface to The Beast in the Jungle & Other TalesThis collection is made up of the later works in Henry James''s repertoire, into which he threw the full weight of his creative fears - notably those concerned with the life he missed out on while distilling his experiences into literature. The stories explore the stairwells of the mind, where consciousness is figured as a place, where one could, terrifyingly, encounter one''s alter ego. Tales such as ''The Beast in the Jungle'' and ''The Jolly Corner'' in this collection are such horror stories of the self. James'' obsession with confrontation and escape is evident throughout this volume, often with marriage as the central tenet, as in ''The Bench of Desolation''. They are not without comedy, however, as with the wild goose chase which makes up the central narrative in ''The Figure in the Carpet''.Frances Wilson has selected these eleven stories and provided an original introduction to James''s work.

The Middle Years & Other Tales - Henry James
''Both the fictional and autobiographical versions of ''The Middle Years'' are concerned with authors, acolytes, and endings rather than the middle of things. Or rather they are about, as are all the tales of James''s middle years, the recognition of one''s own extreme brevity'' Frances Wilson, from her preface to The Middle Years & Other TalesThe stories in this collection represent Henry James''s middle years, a time in his life which he described as ''misanthropic, melancholy, morbid, morose'', after the reception to his earlier works. The collection includes ''The Author of Beltraffio'', which tells of the tragic consequences of family conflict; ''The Middle Years'' which explores creative self-reflection and mortality; and ''The Altar of the Dead'', a poetic elegy to lost places and friends. The stories have been selected not only for their subject but also for their size, the vast majority of them falling under 15 000 words. In other words, this collection''s examination of the brevity of one''s existence is echoed by the length of the stories themselves.Frances Wilson has selected these twelve stories and provided an original introduction to James''s work.

''This selection forms a biography of sorts. Submerged beneath the surface of his melodramas are the unspoken fears that Henry hoped, by living in Europe, to leave behind'' Frances Wilson, from her preface to Madame de Mauves & Other TalesThe stories in this selection are James''s earliest tales, including ''A Tragedy of Error'', which was published when he was just twenty-one. With the exception of ''Madame de Mauves'', which is 31,000 words, all the tales here are short and what James himself would have described as ''anecdotes.'' In these stories James explores notions of freedom, sexuality, a fear of marriage and derailment in love, as well as other concerns of a young man with the mind of a wordly observer. Frances Wilson has selected these thirteen stories and provided an original introduction to James''s work.

Henry James released his little novel The Europeans: A Sketch in 1878. In essence, it is a comedy that contrasts the actions and viewpoints of two European tourists with those of their relatives who reside in the "new" world of New England. The Atlantic Monthly published the serialized version of the book from July to October of 1878. The story begins in Boston and New England in the middle of the 19th century and details the transition from the old to the new world for two European siblings. Eugenia Münster and Felix Young, the two protagonists, have been traveling between France, Italy, and Germany since they were young children. The patriarchal Mr. Wentworth, his son Clifford, 20, and his two daughters Gertrude and Charlotte captivate Felix. In contrast to Felix, who is content to accept the gift of a little house but values his independence, Eugenia's response is different. Her brother, on the other hand, is perfectly content to spend all of his time with Charlotte and Gertrude, spending countless hours painting portraits in their piazza or garden.

Washington Square - Henry James
Introduction and Notes by Ian F.A. Bell, Professor of English Literature, University of Keele.Washington Square marks the culmination of James''s apprentice period as a novelist. With sharply focused attention upon just four principal characters, James provides an acute analysis of middle-class manners and behaviour in the New York of the 1870''s, a period of great change in the life of the city. This change is explored through the device of setting the novel''s action during the 1840s, similarly a period of considerable turbulence as the United States experienced the onset of rapid commercial and industrial expansion.Through the relationships between Austin Sloper, a celebrated physician, and his sister Lavinia Penniman, his daughter Catherine, and Catherine''s suitor, Morris Townsend, James observes the contemporary scene as a site of competing styles and performances where authentic expression cannot be articulated or is subject to suppression.

When she strikes up an intimate friendship with an urbane young Italian, her flat refusal to observe the codes of respectable behaviour leave her perilously exposed. In Daisy Miller James created his first great portrait of the enigmatic and dangerously independent American woman, a figure who would come to dominate his later masterpieces.

The Stable Boy of Auschwitz - Henry Oster, Dexter Ford
The instant Sunday Times and Amazon charts bestseller"I found myself in the Auschwitz stables, and I felt an ember of hope. If I could make myself useful, helping these horses, maybe I could stay alive."In the darkest moment of history, one child found the courage and strength to survive the unimaginable. This is Henry''s true story. One hot, humid day in July, 1944, the Gestapo abducted fifteen-year-old Henry and his mother, forcing them onto cramped cattle cars in the Lódz Polish Ghetto. Like so many Jews before them, they had been selected to disappear - they were being sent to Auschwitz. Exhausted after hours of traveling, they finally emerged from the stifling, filth-ridden cattle car. Already devastated at having lost his father to starvation, Henry clutched his mother''s frail hand, knowing she was all he had left in the world, and that he was the only one left to protect her. In a flash, he felt them being brutally torn apart. Crying out for her, his heart shuddered as he watched her disappear into a sea of other women. Henry knew that was the last time he would ever see her, and he felt like he had failed her. He was now completely alone in the world.Starving, and close to giving up all hope, Henry volunteered to work in the stables, responsible for breeding horses for the war effort. As he watched other prisoners leave and never return, Henry quickly realised these horses were his only lifeline - because every morning he was sent to the stables, was one more morning he escaped the gas chambers. Before long, caring for the horses became a passion, and their comfort and strength gave Henry a glimmer of life and hope in an ocean of death. Although with every second that passed, Henry knew if he became too weak or made one mistake, he would be mercilessly replaced...This is the heart-wrenching and inspirational true account of a courageous little German boy who, against all odds, after losing almost everything a human being can lose, survived to tell his story. This book was originally published as The Kindness of the Hangman.''Heartbreaking. Henry V - Dan Jones
The instant Sunday Times bestsellerThe UK’s bestselling medieval historian brings unforgettably to life the astonishing rise of Henry V, who survived rebellion, a near-fatal arrow wound and a lengthy and precarious princely apprenticeship to become England’s greatest warrior king. 'A historian who writes as addictively as any page-turning novelist.' ObserverHenry V reigned over England for only nine years and four months, and died at the age of just 35, but he looms over the landscape of the late Middle Ages and beyond. The victor of Agincourt was a model king for his successors.Shakespeare’s version of Henry V saw his youthful folly redirected to sober statesmanship, and in the dark days of World War II, Henry’s victories in France were recounted in British propaganda. Churchill called Henry ‘a gleam of splendour in the dark, troubled story of medieval England’, while for one modern medievalist, Henry was, quite simply, ‘the greatest man who ever ruled England’. For Dan Jones, Henry is one of the most intriguing characters in all medieval history, but one of the hardest to pin down.He was a hardened, sometimes brutal, warrior, yet he was also creative and artistic, with a bookish temperament. He was a leader who made many mistakes, who misjudged his friends and family members, yet always seemed to triumph when it mattered. As king, he saved a shattered country from economic ruin, put down rebellions and secured England’s borders; in foreign diplomacy, he made England a serious player once more.Yet through his conquests in northern France, he sowed the seeds for three generations of calamity at home, in the form of the Wars of the Roses. Dan Jones’s life of Henry V provides unprecedented insight into the critical first 26 years of his life before he became king. Both a standalone biography and a completion of Dan’s sequence of English medieval histories that began with The Plantagenets and The Hollow Crown, Henry V is a thrilling and unmissable life of England’s greatest king from our best-selling medieval historian.
