Narodil se v roce 1960 v Kuala Lumpuru. Ve čtrnácti letech se díky četbě nadchnul pro horolezectví, a když mu bylo dvacet pět, vyrazil s přítelem do peruánských And, kde si zlomil nohu a při sestupu málem zahynul v horské bouři. Po návratu prodělal řadu operací, po nichž se navzdory prognózám lékařů vrátil do hor. Podnikl šest neúspěšných výstupů na Eiger, v dosažení vrcholu hory mu však vždy zabránila nepřízeň počasí. Vlivem smrti několika přátel a kolegů horolezců začal měnit svůj vztah k horám a postupně se více soustředil na roli motivačního řečníka a spisovatele. V současné době žije střídavě v Sheffieldu a v Irsku, hodně cestuje a kromě psaní knih a přednášení se věnuje svým početným koníčkům, mezi nimiž i nadále zůstává lezení po skalách. Kromě divadla se věnoval i dabingu, natáčení reklamních rozhlasových i TV spotů a moderování odpolední show v rádiu Kisshády, kde byl i několik let programovým ředitelem nebo kreativním manažerem. Dnes je Ondřej Novák hercem a moderátorem na volné noze, hlasem pořadu Autosalon, namlouvá a vymýšlí reklamy do rádií, televize a na internet.
