With its twisty plots and interwoven characters it paints a vivid portrait of a crucial decade. It's laugh-out-loud funny, too. And with property porn thrown in, what's not to like’ Deborah MoggachMillennium Eve and six people gather on a London rooftop. Recently married, Frankie Blue watches with his wife, Veronica, as the sky above the Thames explodes into a kaleidoscope of light. His childhood companion, Colin, ineptly flirts with Roxy, an unlikely first date, while another old friend, Nodge, newly ‘out’, hides his insecurities from his waspish boyfriend. New Labour are at their zenith. The economy booms, awash with cheap credit. The arrival of the smartphone heralds the sudden and vast expansion of social media. Mass immigration from Eastern Europe leave many unsettled while religious extremism threatens violent conflict. An estate agent in a property boom, Frankie is focused simply on getting rich. But can he survive the coming crash? And what will become of his friends - and his marriage - as they are scoured by the winds of change? When We Were Rich finds the characters introduced in Tim Lott's award-winning 1999 debut, White City Blue, struggling to make sense of a new era. Sad, shocking and often hilarious, it is an acutely observed novel of all our lives, set during what was for some a golden time - and for others a nightmare, from which we are yet to wake up. ‘Wickedly funny and deeply humane. I loved this book’ Sadie Jones ‘Tim Lott revisits the years between millennium fever and the financial crisis, and brings this already long-lost era back to life in a novel every bit as evocative and compelling as we would expect from this prodigiously gifted author’ Jonathan Coe Praise for The Last Summer of the Water Strider: 'I was very moved by The Last Summer of the Water Strider, which is both exquisitely specific to time and place and universal in its examination of humanity, grief and the bizarre prisons that people build for themselves - and one another.

A Pale View of Hills - Kazuo Ishiguro
In this debut novel from acclaimed Booker Prize-winning Kazuo Ishiguro (The Remains of the Day, Never Let Me Go), post-war Japan serves as the haunting backdrop to a subtle story of memory, suicide, and psychological trauma. Etsuko lives alone in rural England, trying to come to terms with the recent suicide of her daughter, Keiko. A visit from her other daughter Niki sends Etsuko retreating into the depths of her memory. She finds herself reliving one particular hot summer in Nagasaki, when she and her friends struggled to rebuild their lives after the horrors of the bomb and WWII. But when her thoughts turn to her strange friendship with Sachiko and Sachiko's daughter Mariko, the memories begin to take on a disturbing cast. As Etsuko examines her relationship with her daughters and struggles to cope with her guilt, the lines between the past and the present-between Etsuko's own daughter and Mariko, between reality and recollection-start to blur. Read the evocative and atmospheric novel that began Kazuo Ishiguro's illustrious literary career. Winner of the Winifred Holtby Prize in 1982, A Pale View of the Hills is still haunting readers decades later.

Klára a Slunce - Kazuo Ishiguro - audiokniha
Přitom vůbec nepatří do výprodeje: snad trochu divně mluví a nerozumí plně souvislostem světa „tam venku“, zato je všímavá a má i solidní kapacitu emocí, byť stále neodpovídají běžné lidské spontaneitě. Noblesní britský nobelista Kazuo Ishiguro znovu tiše přitvrdil v kritice elitářství a diskutuje s odkazem Raye Bradburyho a Arthura C. Clarka o tom, kde hledat meze robotiky a kde kaňky na obrazu lidskosti. A mezitím jeho nejnovější svědomitá služebnice Klára bere publiku dech. S utkvělou vírou v solární pohon totiž hodlá požádat Slunce – odnepaměti považované za zjevení boží tváře –, aby její svěřenku uzdravilo. Bude to na spásu stačit? „Ishiguro se zas a znovu ptá, co obnáší být člověkem, a tedy cítit vlastní já. A kolik z onoho já smíme a máme věnovat druhým.“ – National Public Radio. Nepostradatelnou.“ – The New York Times Book Review.

V románové tvorbě britského nobelisty Kazua Ishigura představují Neutěšenci (The Unconsoled, 1995) význačný předěl. Po světově úspěšném Soumraku dne (The Remains of the Day, 1989, č. 1997), jemuž předcházela dvě raná díla s japonskou tematikou, Vybledlá vyhlídka s kopci (A Pale View of Hills, 1982, č. 2018) a Malíř pomíjivého světa (An Artist of the Floating World, 1986, č. 1999), se autor rozhodl opustit tvůrčí jistoty, jimiž si vydobyl přední postavení na britské literární scéně: ať už jde o postkoloniální tematiku, "tichý", ale vycizelovaný jazykový styl, realistický způsob vyprávění ve dvou prolínajících se časových rovinách či celkově melancholické ladění próz. Do nejmenované evropské metropole, připomínající složený portrét Prahy a Vídně, přijíždí světově proslulý klavírní virtuóz.

Druhý román Kazua Ishigura Malíř pomíjivého světa nás přivádí do Japonska po konci druhé světové války, kdy mnozí z těch, kteří zemi přivedli do zkázy, čelí historické změně a svému svědomí.

Klára a Slunce - Kazuo Ishiguro
V příběhu vyprávěném jazykem poznamenaným zvláštnostmi v Klářině vnímání a vyjadřování skutečnosti potvrzuje Ishiguro opět své literární mistrovství. Průzračně prostými slovy vytváří záludně složitý obraz současného spíš než budoucího lidstva. Klára v něm figuruje coby výplod civilizace, v níž obyčejný, technologicky nevylepšený lidský život stále více připomíná minulost, která bude brzy definitivně překonána, případně politováníhodný omyl. Díky rafinovanosti, s níž Ishiguro vtahuje čtenáře do Klářiny snahy pochopit, jak vlastně lidi fungují, přesahuje román meze pouhé společenské kritiky, satiry či alegorie.

"Almost certainly a masterpiece." (Anita Brookner). Ryder, a renowned pianist, arrives in a Central European city he cannot identify for a concert he cannot remember agreeing to give. But then as he traverses a landscape by turns eerie and comical - and always strangely malleable, as a dream might be - he comes steadily to realise he is facing the most crucial performance of his life. Ishiguro's extraordinary and original study of a man whose life has accelerated beyond his control was met on publication by consternation, vilification - and the highest praise. If you enjoyed The Unconsoled, you might also like Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day, now available in Faber Modern Classics.

We Were There is about a Black Britain that for too long has been unknown and unexplored – the one that exists beyond London.''A vital corrective that enhances our understanding of black British history'' STEVE MCQUEEN''Utterly brilliant'' DIPO FALOYIN''Captivated me from the first page'' PRAGYA AGARWAL ''Essential reading'' EKOW ESHUNFrom the late 1970s to the early 1990s Britain was in tumult: rocked by Margaret Thatcher’s radical economic policy, the rise of the National Front, widespread civil unrest. With anti-immigration policies in the political mainstream, Black lives were on the frontline of a racial reckoning. But it was also a time of unrivalled Black cultural creation, organising and resistance. This was the crucible in which modern Britain came into existence. We Were There brings into the spotlight for the first time extraordinary Black lives in once-rich cities now home to failing industries: the foundries of Birmingham, the docks of Liverpool and Cardiff, the mills of Bradford. We are in Wigan, Wolverhampton, Manchester and the green expanse of the British countryside. We meet feminists and Rastafarians, academics and pan-Africanists, environmental campaigners and rugby-league superstars; witness landmark campaigns against miscarriages of justice; encounter radical groups of artists and pioneering thinkers; tread dancefloors that hosted Northern Soul all-nighters and the birth of Acid House.Together, these voices and stories rewrite our idea of Black British culture. London was only ever part of the picture – We Were There is about incorporating a vastly broader range of Black Britons into the fabric of our national story.Alive with energy and purpose, We Were There decisively expands our sense of who we are. Confronting, joyful and thrilling, this is a profoundly important new portrait of modern Britain.

Before We Were Strangers - Renée Carlino
From the USA TODAY bestselling author of Sweet Thing and Nowhere But Here comes a love story about a Craigslist "missed connection" post that gives two people a second chance at love fifteen years after they were separated in New York City. To the Green-eyed Lovebird: We met fifteen years ago, almost to the day, when I moved my stuff into the NYU dorm room next to yours at Senior House. You called us fast friends.I like to think it was more. We lived on nothing but the excitement of finding ourselves through music (you were obsessed with Jeff Buckley), photography (I couldn't stop taking pictures of you), hanging out in Washington Square Park, and all the weird things we did to make money. I learned more about myself that year than any other.Yet, somehow, it all fell apart. We lost touch the summer after graduation when I went to South America to work for National Geographic. When I came back, you were gone.A part of me still wonders if I pushed you too hard after the wedding... I didn't see you again until a month ago. It was a Wednesday. You were rocking back on your heels, balancing on that thick yellow line that runs along the subway platform, waiting for the F train. I didn't know it was you until it was too late, and then you were gone. Again. You said my name; I saw it on your lips. I tried to will the train to stop, just so I could say hello. After seeing you, all of the youthful feelings and memories came flooding back to me, and now I've spent the better part of a month wondering what your life is like.I might be totally out of my mind, but would you like to get a drink with me and catch up on the last decade and a half?

*Kazuo Ishiguro’s new novel Klara and the Sun is now available*In Nocturnes, Kazuo Ishiguro explores ideas of love, music and the passing of time. From the piazzas of Italy to the ‘hush-hush floor’ of an exclusive Hollywood Hotel, the characters we encounter range from young dreamers to cafe musicians to faded stars, all of them at some moment of reckoning. Gentle, intimate and witty, this quintet is marked by a haunting theme – the struggle to keep alive a sense of life’s romance, even as one gets older, relationships founder and youthful hopes recede.‘Each of these stories is heartbreaking in its own way, but some have moments of great comedy, and they all require a level of attention that, typically, Ishiguro’s writing rewards.’ Observer ‘[They] come up on you quietly, but then haunt you for days … These little pieces could only be the work of a great composer.’ Evening Standard‘A fine and moving collection of stories, displaying his unique combination of the sad, the stoic and the consoling. When I Were a Lad… looks at the glorious-yet-risky childhoods of yesteryear before the Health and Safety officers told us we couldn’t do everything because it was too dangerous. The sleeper hit of Christmas 2009 – more than 4,000 copies sold through Bookscan.A book to send shivers down the spine of any parent who has spent years protecting their children from the slightest bump and bash.A glorious romp though some of the most reckless photos from the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s, tagged with side-splitting captions.Ah, the past. A time when children could play in the snow without a helmet, crampons and a risk assessment report. When footballs were made from rhino hide and cricket was played with one pad, if you were lucky. When I Were a Lad… looks at the glorious-yet-risky childhoods of yesteryear before the Health and Safety officers told us we couldn’t do everything because it was too dangerous. It reflects on a time when children were allowed in with the animals at London Zoo; a time before the car seatbelt was invented (let alone used); a time when you were allowed to dress up endangered species in goalkeeping kit and take penalties against them. The authors have trawled through the major historic archives to find some glorious photo opportunities where the safety angle of the participants was the last thing anyone thought of. Children perch happily on lethal, limb-mangling machinery, stand all-smiles on live crocodiles, feed brown bears with their hands and get scooped from the street by passing tram conductors! These truly were the days that Health and Safety forgot, back when I were a lad…

Before We Were Trans - Kit Heyam
'A beautiful, brilliant, lively book that weaves together fascinating and moving examples with thoughtful analysis. Both heartfelt and rigorous, entertaining and scholarly, Before We Were Trans invites us to expand our sense of communities - past and present - in welcoming ways, rather than contracting them and policing their borders' MEG-JOHN BARKER, author of Gender: A Graphic Guide'Celebrates trans history, whilst acknowledging the reality of what it means to live within our community with joy and kindness. In-depth research and personal stories tie Before We Were Trans up into a true treat for the mind' JAMIE WINDUST, author of In Their ShoesAcross the world today, people of all ages are doing fascinating, creative, messy things with gender. These people have a rich history - but one that is often left behind by narratives of trans lives that focus on people with stable, binary, uncomplicated gender identities. As a result, these stories tend to be recent, binary, stereotyped, medicalised and white. Before We Were Trans is a new and different story of gender, that seeks not to be comprehensive or definitive, but - by blending culture, feminism and politics - to widen the scope of what we think of as trans history by telling the stories of people across the globe whose experience of gender has been transgressive, or not characterised by stability or binary categories.Transporting us from Renaissance Venice to seventeenth-century Angola, from Edo Japan to North America, the stories this book tells leave questions and resist conclusions. They are fraught with ambiguity, and defy modern Western terminology and categories - not least the category of 'trans' itself. But telling them provides a history that reflects the richness of modern trans reality more closely than any previously written. Before We Were Trans is a history and celebration of gender in all its fluidity, ambiguity and complexity.

Nocturnes - Kazuo Ishiguro
One of the most celebrated writers of our time gives us his first cycle of short fiction: five brilliantly etched, interconnected stories in which music is a vivid and essential character. A once-popular singer, desperate to make a comeback, turning from the one certainty in his life . . . A man whose unerring taste in music is the only thing his closest friends value in him . . . A struggling singer-songwriter unwittingly involved in the failing marriage of a couple he's only just met . . . A gifted, underappreciated jazz musician who lets himself believe that plastic surgery will help his career . . . A young cellist whose tutor promises to "unwrap” his talent . . . Passion or necessity-or the often uneasy combination of the two-determines the place of music in each of these lives. And, in one way or another, music delivers each of them to a moment of reckoning: sometimes comic, sometimes tragic, sometimes just eluding their grasp. An exploration of love, need, and the ineluctable force of the past, Nocturnes reveals these individuals to us with extraordinary precision and subtlety, and with the arresting psychological and emotional detail that has marked all of Kazuo Ishiguro's acclaimed works of fiction.

Kazuo Ishiguro nabízí podmanivý, hluboce jímavý příběh o ztracených vzpomínkách, lásce, pomstě, válce a síle zapomnění.

Soumrak dne - Kazuo Ishiguro

We Were Not The Savages, First Nations History - Daniel N.¿ Paul
The title of this book We Were Not the Savages speaks to the truth of what happened when Europeans invaded Mi'kmaw lands in the 17th century. Prior to the European invasion the Mi'kmaq lived healthy lives and for thousands of years lived harmoniously with nature in the land they called Mi'kma'ki. This book sets the record straight. When the Europeans arrived, they were welcomed and sustained by the Mi'kmaq. After they became well established, over the next three centuries, they turned on the Mi'kmaq; their language, culture and their way of life was systematically ravaged by the newcomers to whom they had extended human kindness. The murderous savagery of white supremacist policies that begot residential schools, Indian reserves, scalping proclamations, etc., all but wiped out the Mi'kmaw people. Yet the Mi'kmaq survived and today stand defending the land, the water and nature's bounty from the European way of life, which threatens the natural world we live in and need to survive. Since the first edition was published in 1993, Daniel Paul's ongoing research puts the lie to the mainstream record of Canadian settler colonialism and reveals that the mistreatment of Indigenous Peoples throughout the Americas is not confined to the past. In this 4th edition the author shares his research, which catalogues not only the historical tragedy but the ongoing attempts to silence the Mi'kmaq and other Indigenous Peoples. Paul's work continues to give the Mi'kmaw people a voice that must be heard. It is a guiding light in a dark world.
