Weimar Under the Palms - Thomas Blubacher

The story of the German exiles⠔and cultural titans⠔who settled in Pacific Palisades and influenced American culture.  In the early twentieth century, Pacific Palisades was home to America⠙s most modern film studio of the time as well as the proposed site of the world⠙s largest Christian center. But by the end of the 1920s, the Los Angeles neighborhood had become the refuge of the rich and beautiful as German and Austrian filmmakers, among them Salka and Berthold Viertel, settled there. They were soon followed by cultural and intellectual giants of the Weimar Republic who were fleeing Europe, such as Max Reinhardt, Hanns Eisler, or Max Horkheimer. These great minds turned Pacific Palisades into a ⠜Weimar under the palm trees.⠝ Though many were successful in exile⠔including Vicki Baum, Thomas Mann, and Lion Feuchtwanger⠔others felt as if they were in a ⠜sun prison⠝ far from home.  Recounting a story of glamor and great minds, Thomas Blubacher tells of the history of German-speaking exiles that is still alive there today, going on a foray through the film industry, taking us on a journey to this special place that was so recently devastated by fire. Many of the homes in this book have now gone, but Marta Feuchtwanger⠙s Villa Aurora and the Thomas Mann house still stand as a testament to luck, resilience, and history.

Martius. The Book of Palms. 45th Ed. - Hans Walter Lack

On December 15, 1868, Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius (1794â “1868), Professor of Botany at the University of Munich and director of the Royal Botanic Garden, was carried to his grave in a coffin covered with fresh palm leaves. The fronds were a reference to his groundbreaking Natural History of Palms: a work in three volumes, published between 1823 and 1853. This encyclopedic treasury of 240 exquisite chromolithographic illustrations was based on von Martiusâ ™s expeditions through Brazil and Peru. From 1817 to 1820, he traveled over 2,250 km (1,400 miles) through the Amazon basin to investigate natural history and native tribes with zoologist Johann Baptist von Spix. The result was an unrivaled catalogue of all known genera of the palm family, outlining the modern classification of palms, describing all the palms of Brazil, and producing the first maps of palm biogeography. Von Martiusâ ™s folio is unusual in its inclusion of cross-sectioned diagrams, conveying the architecture of these mighty trees, which central Europeans would have found hard to imagine accurately. Equally remarkable are the color landscapes showing various palmsâ ”often standing alone in simple and elegant beauty.

Under the Greenwood Tree - Thomas Hardy

The arrival of two newcomers in the quiet village of Mellstock arouses a bitter feud and leaves a convoluted love affair in its wake. While the Reverend Maybold creates a furore among the village s musicians with his decision to abolish the church s traditional string choir and replace it with a modern mechanical organ, the new schoolteacher, Fancy Day, causes an upheaval of a more romantic nature, winning the hearts of three very different men - a local farmer, a church musician and Maybold himself. Under the Greenwood Tree follows the ensuing maze of intrigue and passion with gentle humour and sympathy, deftly evoking the richness of village life, yet tinged with melancholy for a rural world that Hardy saw fast disappearing.

Under the Greenwood Tree - Thomas Hardy

With an Introduction and Notes by Dr Claire Seymour, University of Kent at Canterbury.Under the Greenwood Tree is Hardy s most bright, confident and optimistic novel. This delightful portrayal of a picturesque rural society, tinged with gentle humour and quiet irony, established Hardy as a writer. However, the novel is not merely a charming rural idyll. The double-plot, in which the love story of Dick Dewey and Fancy Day is inter-related with a tragic chapter in the history of Mellstock Choir, hints at the poignant disappearance of a long-lived and highly-valued traditional way of life.

Once more she earns her place in a postwar British canon of playfully serious mavericks that runs from Muriel Spark and Brigid Brophy to Nicola Barker and Ali Smith.’ Spectator ‘Like a darker, funnier The White Lotus, The Sleepwalkers is horrifying in the best possible way. I loved every moment of it.’ James Smythe ‘The Sleepwalkers is brilliant, savage and hilarious. The voice is so strong and so distinctive from the get-go, so bold and pitilessly funny. There is no whingeing here, just a fearless takedown which I read through in a single streak of pure delight. It starts to feel like the entire island is obsessed with #39;the sleepwalkers #39;, but what at first seems like a fun tale to tell before bed quickly evolves into a living nightmare. Caught in a web of deception and intrigue, where nothing and nobody are quite what they seem, Evelyn and Richard discover that their island paradise may in fact be hell on earth and that their only means of escape is to confront dark truths about themselves and those they love. Exhilarating, suspenseful, and subversively funny, in The Sleepwalkers Thomas takes elements of Daphne Du Maurier and Patricia Highsmith and blends them with her own unique sensibility to create an unforgettable thriller of rare intelligence that cements her reputation as the most exciting and original author of her generation. ‘Muriel Spark’s disreputable niece.’ Spectator ‘She #39;s a genius.’ Douglas Coupland ‘Thomas has the mesmerising power of a great story teller.’ Financial Times ‘One of the most startling, unpredictable writers of her generation.’ Scotsman

A Tomte or Tomten, as he is known Sweden, is a little creature who normally lives around farms in the countryside, but now also lives in villages and towns. He is very industrious and will protect you, your family and animals; but, if you are unkind he will take revenge, and play all sorts of unpleasant tricks on you. At Christmas time they will leave little gifts for the children and, in return for his care and all his work, Tomte like to be to be rewarded with a big bowl of his favourite food. Porridge! Humans never see a Tomte, well perhaps occasionally, but they know he is there. Only animals can see them and they can speak their languages due to their magical powers. Thomas is no exception, but one day whilst in a strange area of the dark forest Thomas suddenly loses his powers and sinks into the deep snow and his life starts to fade. Fortunately he is found by a small herd of reindeer who have never seen a Tomte of Human before but instinctively help him. The Story Begins! And has a delightful twist in the end... The Artist in the Counterculture - Thomas Crow

How California⠙s counterculture of the 1960s to 1980s profoundly shaped⠔and was shaped by⠔West Coast artistsThe 1960s exert a special fascination in modern art. But most accounts miss the defining impact of the period⠙s youth culture, largely incubated in California, on artists who came of age in that decade. As their prime exemplar, Bruce Conner, reminisced, ⠜I did everything that everybody did in 1967 in the Haight-Ashbury. . . . I would take peyote and walk out in the streets.⠝ And he vividly channeled those experiences into his art, while making his mark on every facet of the psychedelic movement⠔from the mountains of Mexico with Timothy Leary to the rock ballrooms of San Francisco to the gilded excesses of the New Hollywood. In The Artist in the Counterculture, Thomas Crow tells the story of California art from the 1960s to the 1980s⠔some of the strongest being made anywhere at the time⠔and why it cannot be understood apart from the new possibilities of thinking and feeling unleashed by the rebels of the counterculture. Crow reevaluates Conner and other key figures⠔from Catholic activist Corita Kent to Black Panther Emory Douglas to ecological witness Bonnie Ora Sherk⠔as part of a generational cohort galvanized by resistance to war, racial oppression, and environmental degradation. Younger practitioners of performance and installation carried the mindset of rebellion into the 1970s and 1980s, as previously excluded artists of color moved to the forefront in Los Angeles. Mike Kelley, their contemporary, remained unwaveringly true to the late countercultural flowering he had witnessed at the dawn of his career. The result is a major new account of the counterculture⠙s enduring influence on modern art.

Proclaiming the Parables - Thomas G. Long

In Proclaiming the Parables, noted preacher and scholar Thomas G. Long moves away from past treatment of the parables primarily as literary devices and moves toward an emphasis on their theological impact as pointers to the kingdom of God. While the parables are indeed significant poetic literary creations that have enchanted readers over the centuries, their main power, he claims, lies in their disclosure of the kingdom of God, which is not merely an idea, nor even just a complex symbol with generative and centrifugal force, but an event: the inbreaking of the life of God into human history and experience.Long sees parables not merely as creative figures of speech but as GPS devices taking hearers to those places where the event of God is happening all around us. This book provides two chapters for each synoptic Gospel. The first focuses on the Gospel as a whole and the parablesâ ™ place in it, and the second provides preachers and teachers with detailed exegetical and homiletical commentary for each major parable in that Gospel. Two introductory chapters additionally situate this book in the history and theology of the parablesâ ™ interpretation and address questions that preachers have about preaching the parables. Preachers who consult this volume will be informed about each major parable, guided through the controversies regarding interpretation, and stimulated to preach on the parable in fresh, faithful, and creative ways.

The Loser - Thomas Bernhard

LRB BOOKSHOP S AUTHOR OF THE MONTH ONE OF THE GUARDIAN S BEST BOOKS OF 2019 If you havenâ ™t read Bernhard, you will not know of the most radical advance in fiction since Joyce ... My advice: dive in. Lucy Ellmann I absolutely love Bernhard: he is one of the darkest and funniest writers ... A must read for everybody. Karl Ove KnausgaardMid-century Austria. Three aspiring concert pianists - Wertheimer, Glenn Gould, and the narrator - have dedicated their lives to achieving the status of a virtuoso. But one day, two of them overhear Gould playing Bach s Goldberg Variations, and his incomparable genius instantly destroys them both. They are forced to abandon their musical ambitions: Wertheimer, over a tortured process of disintegration that sees him becoming obsessed with both writing and his own sister, with whom he has a quasi-incestuous relationship culminating in death; and the narrator, instantly, retreating into obscurity to write a book that he periodically destroys and restarts. Written as a monologue in one remarkable unbroken paragraph, Thomas Bernhard s dazzling meditation on failure, genius, and fame is a radical new reading experience: musical, paralysing, raging, and inimitable.

Thomas Hardy and the Death of Emma - Andrew Norman

In many of his poems, the great Dorset poet and novelist Thomas Hardy referred to a certain romantic courtship, a marriage which became progressively more problematical, and finally to a bereavement in which a man loses his wife. So, who was Hardy writing about? The clue is to be found in his early poems, where the names of several locations in North Cornwall are mentioned, this being the very same place which featured in Hardy⠙s courtship of Emma Gifford, who was to become his first wife. The poems raise certain questions. Given that Hardy and Emma gradually drifted apart so that in the end they lived mainly separate lives, albeit under the same roof, why was he so grief-stricken when she died, bearing in mind that their marriage was so unsatisfactory? How did Hardy cope as he passed through the various stages of grief, which he articulated so poignantly and expressively in his poems? These stages are recognized today, thanks to the work of Swiss-US psychiatrist, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, and US expert on grieving and loss, David Kessler. Finally, how did Hardy survive and come out the other side, and can his experience be a guide to others who find themselves alone and bereft after losing their partner?

Under the Hornbeams - Emma Tarlo

A unique, life-affirming memoir about the authorÂ’s friendship with two men living in Regent s Park, London. IÂ’m not homeless: this is my home! Nick points to the branches of the hornbeam under which we are standing, its leaves still glistening in the aftermath of the morning rain. On one of the lower branches sits a robin, joining our conversation. It seems to be saying: Why should anyone want to leave this place?Nick and Pascal live and sleep outside in central London. They are an unusual duo: Nick is an avid reader of history and philosophy able to converse on any topic; Pascal is quiet, spending much of his time lying still, communicating silently with birds and animals. They have lived alongside each other in LondonÂ’s streets for nearly two decades, yet do not identify as homeless. For the past five years they have taken shelter under the hornbeam trees in RegentÂ’s Park.Emma Tarlo first meets Nick and Pascal when out walking. Gradually through the sharing of food, conversation and life stories they develop a friendship. Emma is impressed by their unique way of experiencing both the hardship and pleasures of life outside, and their conversations under the open sky prompt Emma to question many things in her own life, transforming her understanding of what freedom might look like.Under the Hornbeams follows the seasons of a single year through sun, wind, rain and snow. Returning to the park almost daily, Emma meets the community of people, dogs and birds who gravitate around Nick and Pascal and discovers the precarious networks of giving and receiving that exist undetected in LondonÂ’s streets. The result is a life-affirming story that pays homage to the power of human connection and upturns many of our preconceptions about home, family, work and community. This is a book that will stay with you long after reading.

In the shadow of the volcano, ragged children beg coins to buy skulls made of chocolate, ugly pariah dogs roam the streets and Geoffrey Firmin - ex-consul, ex-husband, an alcoholic and a ruined man - is living out the last day of his life. Drowning himself in mescal while his former wife and half-brother look on, powerless to help him, the consul has become an enduring tragic figure. His story, the image of one man s agonised journey towards Calvary, became a prophetic book for a whole generation.Malcolm Lowry (1909-1957) was born and died in England. Between school and studying English at St Catherine s College, Cambridge he spent five months at sea as a deckhand, an experience which gave him the material for his first novel, Ultramarine (1933). After marrying in Paris, he moved to New York where he completed In Ballast to the White (1936). Nothing New Under The Sun - J.C. Ryan

The more Carter Devereux, a professor of archeology, researches and studies the history of the human species, the more he becomes convinced that Solomon was onto something when he said: “The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. Is there anything whereof it may be said, See, this is new? It hath been already of old time, which was before us. There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.” Ecclesiastes 1:9 -11 (Circa 940 BC). Carter’s research and exploration into this history takes him to South America, India, and the Middle East, where he makes mind-boggling discoveries which challenge our entire view of human history. And before long, Carter finds himself with not only a large number of critics from across the world, but also a number of ardent followers. Through the ages kings, rulers, power seekers and governments, have been trying secretly, and sometimes not so secretly, to get their hands on artifacts believed to have immense power. Examples include the Holy Grail, the Ark of the Covenant, Bachal Isu – the staff of Moses, carried by David, and the King of Kings, Jesus Christ, the Spear of Destiny, the time machine “the glock” created by the Germans during WWII, and ancient lost cities with hidden fortunes of gold and artifacts with unimaginable powers. There is a no shortage of unscrupulous, power hungry people who will do anything, including kill, to possess these relics- if they exist. Most frightening of them all are the ancient texts that speak of earth’s destruction by nuclear weapons thousands of years ago. Do those nuclear weapons still exist? If so where are they? Can Carter Devereux discover them before anyone else can? ~~~ Nothing New Under The Sun is the first book in J C Ryan’s Carter Devereux Mystery Thriller series: a full-length novel and a thought-provoking mystery about the discovery of antediluvian human civilizations and the terrifying consequences of digging up the past.

Under the Sickle and the Sledgehammer - Kirsti Huurre

â ˜A captivating story of courage, belief, and disillusionment under the persistent tyranny of Russian imperialism. Even after 90 years, Kirstiâ ™s story is a testament to the ongoing fight for Freedom. - Ana Khizanishvili, Human Rights LawyerUnder the Sickle and the Sledgehammer was originally published in 1942, as war still raged between Finland and the Soviet Union. The author of this memoir, Kirsti Huurre (a pseudonym, since it was far too risky to reveal her real name), was a Finnish woman who immigrated to the Soviet Union in the 1930s, convinced the new egalitarian state and workersâ ™ paradise would provide a better life for her and her young son; she was hopeful that, once settled, she would be able to send for him. What followed was vastly different to what was promised: a life filled with fear, suspicion, violence and state-run propaganda that spun a web of lies around its people. Kirsti eventually escaped â “ defying the odds when so many of her friends and loved ones did not.Under the Sickle and the Sledgehammer is the first English translation of what became the second most censored book â “ second only to Mein Kampf â “ from Finnish libraries after the war. Under the Eye of the Big Bird - Hiromi Kawakami

In the distant future, humans are on the verge of extinction and have settled in small tribes across the planet under the observation and care of the Mothers. Some children are made in factories, from cells of rabbits and dolphins; some live by getting nutrients from water and light, like plants. The survival of the race depends on the interbreeding of these and other alien beings - but it is far from certain that connection, love, reproduction, and evolution will persist among the inhabitants of this faltering new world. Unfolding over geological eons, Under the Eye of the Big Bird is at once an astonishing vision of the end of our species as we know it and a meditation on the qualities that, for better and worse, make us human.
