RUR bylo dopsáno v roce 1920, kdy také vyšlo poprvé tiskem. Premiéru v Národním divadle mělo 25. ledna 1921. Ještě předtím (2. a 3. ledna 1921) jej sehráli ochotníci Jednoty divadelních ochotníků Klicpera v Hradci Králové. Úspěch této Čapkovy hry byl okamžitý a mimořádný, ve velmi krátké době bylo drama přeloženo a uváděno na zahraničních scénách (1921 – Cáchy, 1922 – Varšava, Bělehrad, New York, 1923 – Londýn, Vídeň, Curych, 1924 – Budapešť, Krakov, Paříž, Tokio a další). Třicetiletý autor se tak rázem stal celosvětově známým dramatikem. Varovná Čapkova výzva k lidstvu, pronesená krátce po skončení první světové války, našla silnou odezvu všude, kde bylo RUR uvedeno. Myšlenka výroby umělého člověka – pracovní síly se ve světové vědeckofantastické literatuře objevila již daleko dříve (v našem kulturním prostředí je známa pověst o pražském Golemovi). Karel Čapek však na radu svého bratra jako první užívá pro umělou bytost pojmenování „Robot“, odvozené z výrazu slovanského původu „robota“ – těžká, nedobrovolná práce. Tento termín se stal brzy součástí světových jazyků. Přestože tato Čapkova hra je v současnosti na divadelních prknech uváděna jen výjimečně, její poselství je v postmoderní době až mrazivě aktuální, a proto si zaslouží čtenářovu i posluchačovu pozornost. Vypuká občanská válka a v ní umírají dvojčata Petr a Kornel, každý na "druhé straně barikády"....zůstává jen nejmladší, citlivý Toni. Zemi přepadá cizí stát a začíná válka...Všichni její muži přesvědčují matku, aby pustila Toniho do války, matka je prosí, aby ji k tomu nenutili... Když volá žena v rozhlase všechny muže do zbraně, bojovat za vlast a oznamuje zprávu o nepřátelským torpédem zasažené a potápějící se cvičné lodi Gorgona, a mimoděk říká, že její syn je mezi 400 chlapci na lodi, ještě pořád matka odmítá Toniho poslat do boje. Žena v rozhlase volá celý svět o pomoc, čte zprávu, že nepřítel shodil bomby na školu, zranil a zabil mnoho dětí... Tehdy se matka rozhoduje: "Copak někdo může zabíjet děti? Malé usmrkané děti? Jdi Toni, jdi!"

Oba tito géniové pro 1. československou republiku i pro celý svět a jeho budoucnost udělali nesmírný kus práce. Oba prožili šťastný a naplněný život, avšak zatímco Masaryk mohl být se svým životem spokojený až do smrti, Čapek v závěru života trpěl. Jeho články jsou jako celek dojímavým dramatem, které po prvních obavných předzvěstech přechází v typicky čapkovský laskavý optimismus, jenž je ovšem nakonec přehlušen Masarykovou smrtí a tragédií 1. republiky. Poněkud odlišný je též osud jejíich díla. Čapek je dodnes všeobecně chápán a přijímán, avšak Masaryk zůstává u nás a zejména ve světě nepochopen, především jako co do kvantity i kvality zcela výjimečný myslitel, tvůrce - a což je neméně důležité - i realizátor komplexního, integrovaného, univerzalistického a dodnes platného ideového systému. Upomíná-li tato knížka na dílo Karla Čapka, snad ještě víc proto upomíná na dílo Tomáše Garrigua Masaryka.

Koncem dvacátých let minulého století si získal čtenářskou přízeň svými dvěma sbírkami mistrných krátkých próz Povídky z první kapsy a Povídky z druhé kapsy. Jeho dílo však vyvrcholilo ve třech románových prózách - třetí z nich byl právě Obyčejný život. Jeho hrdinou je železniční úředník, který se na sklonku svého života pokusí popsat běh svého obyčejného života. Když jej vypoví, začne však sám se svým pohledem vést stále vášnivější spor o to, kdo vlastně byl, jaký život skutečně žil. Postupně nachází v sobě jakoby přehlížené motivy svých činů, jakési skryté osoby, které se zdají z rámce obyčejného života vybočovat. Každý lidský život, i ten zdánlivě nejobyčejnější, dokazuje Čapek, je ve skutečnosti bohatý a složitý, všichni žijeme jen jednu ze svých možností. Ale i ty neuskutečněné možnosti nám pomáhají porozumět druhým lidem a chápat jejich životy. Obyčejný život patří k nejpozoruhodnějším dílům nejen Čapkovy, ale celé naší moderní prózy.

Koncem listopadu si již čtenáři Lidových novin mohli přečíst první stránky románu Hordubal, který v deníku začal vycházet na pokračování a zakrátko (1933) dostal knižní podobu. Píše-li Čapek, že začne „nový díl“, nemá tím na mysli následující prózy Povětroň a Obyčejný život, neboť v té době zřejmě ani sám netušil, že se Hordubal stane součástí trilogie, o níž budou jednou literární vědci hovořit jako o jednom z nejsmělejších výbojů nejen české, ale i světové prózy.

Audiokniha: Dílo Karla Čapka (*9.1.1890 – †25.12.1938) JAK SE CO DĚLÁ je soubor fejetonů z roku 1938. Audiokniha: V roce 1924 otevřel Ferdinand Peroutka v časopise Přítomnost anketu Proč nejsem komunistou?
