Básník, prozaik, malíř, fotograf, designér a typograf Roman Erben (1940) vstoupil na literární scénu ve druhé polovině 60. let, kdy se jeho tvorba objevila v několika časopisech. Bývá zařazován k postsurrealickému okruhu UDS, kde se profilovali např. Milan Nápravník, Věra Linhartová, Vratislav Effenberger, Zbyněk Havlíček, Stanislav Dvorský nebo Petr Král. Své knihy vydával v 60. a 70. letech ve formě soukromých ilustrovaných bibliofilií. V roce 1980 emigroval do Německa. Knižně debutuje až po Listopadu souborem Artyčoky chána Kučma, který shrnuje jeho tvorbu z let 1962-1989. Nyní žije střídavě v Praze a Mnichově. Nedílnou součástí jeho literární tvorby vždy byly i autorské ilustrace. Nejinak je tomu také v právě vydané sbírce aforismů Úlety, kterou doprovází 38 autorových kreseb. Autorem doslovu je Stanislav Dvorský.

Surrealistické východisko pak Erben vyměnil za širou pláň imaginativní tvorby. Tam je doma podnes.

Časopis Humus byl přeshraničním projektem zvláštní, dobrodružné povahy. Vydavatelem byl český básník a výtvarník Roman Erben, od roku 1980 žijící v německém exilu. Časopis naformátoval jako místo setkávání přátel a známých: kreslířů a malířů, básníků, prozaiků, esejistů. V konkrétních textech a obrazech se tu pěstovaly hry, mystifikace a komika. Obecně pak časopis dával zprávu o jednom úrodném kulturním poli, kde se mísily nejen umělecké druhy a žánry, ale také exilová tvorba s domácí, česká se zahraniční, mladá a mladší s klasiky šedesátých let. Ve čtyřech číslech časopisu publikovali své přívěsky například básníci Josef Hiršal a Bohumila Grogerová, Petr Král,, Ivan Wernisch, Ivan Diviš, ale i kritické osobnosti jako Sylvie Richterová, Josef Vojvodík nebo Jan Štolba. Sebraný Humus (kompletní čtyři čísla) plní důležitou funkci: zpřítomňuje jednu důležitou fasetu živého a pohyblivého podloží (zejména české) literatury a kultury devadesátých let. Je zajímavé sledovat, co z té doby přežilo, jakým dalším vývojem konkrétní aktéři ze stránek revue prošli.

Jan Gabriel ovšem zásadně přepodstatňuje vlivy a výrazové postupy jmenovaných autorů, a skládá cosi jako neotřele imaginativní puzzle vlastního vidění a výrazu, jenž je v posledku, ve svém celku - a to není paradox - strukturován a konfigurován osobitě. Tři analytické mozky s mimořádnou schopností dedukce, před kterými má zločinec asi stejnou šanci na únik jako krásná žena před kapitánem Exnerem. Tedy nulovou. Samozřejmě se na konci příběhu dovíme, kdo je vrahem talentovaného ševce, ale o to ani tak nejde. Cesta k odhalení by nás, čtenáře či posluchače, měla bavit. A v dosažení tohoto cíle je i v tomto případě Václav Erben virtuosem.
