Two Hundred Years of Muddling Through - Duncan Weldon

Written in a chatty way but contains a remarkable depth and intelligence''MATTHEW SYEDThe UK is, at the same time, both one of the world''s most successful economies and one of Europe''s laggards. The country contains some of Western Europe''s richest areas such as the south east of England, but also some of its poorest such as the north east or Wales. Looking into the past helps understand why.The debates about the balance between economic openness and sovereignty that re-emerged after Brexit would have been familiar to Peel and Cobden in the 1840s. The size of the government''s deficit has dominated politics since 2010 but fretting about the scale of the national debt was almost a national pastime during Victoria''s reign. Supposedly modern concerns about the impacts of new technology on jobs and inequality date back to at least Captain Swing and Ned Ludd. In the Light of Dawn - Marie Carter

Illuminating two hundred years of lost Black History through the lens of an iconic abolitionist settlementIn the Light of Dawn shares the compelling story of how the iconic Dawn Settlement—now largely within the boundaries of Dresden, Ontario— shaped (and was shaped by) a broader course of international events along a 200-year continuum of resistance and contribution. Using a geographic approach, the book reveals that the town’s size, scope, and importance eclipses its previous narrow interpretations as a “failed” utopian colony at a terminus of the Underground Railroad lead by the Reverend Josiah Henson (the “real Uncle Tom” of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s landmark anti-slavery novel). Beyond Henson, Dawn’s history contains familiar figures like Frederick Douglass and Rosa Parks as well as a pantheon of lesser known but equally important Black leaders including Dennis Hill, William Whipper, William Carter, and Hugh Burnett. The trajectories of Dawn’s residents often intersect with pivotal international events from the time of the fur trade to the modern Civil Rights movement. Activism from 19th-century Pennsylvania’s Black Elite and other major American centres run like a golden thread through successive generations in Dawn, resulting in landmark actions such as the challenge to segregation of private businesses and publicly ... The Rule of Laws - Fernanda Pirie

''A fascinating, comprehensive study that forces us to think again about what law is, and why it matters ... For those who want to understand why human society has emerged as it has, this is essential reading'' Rana Mitter, author of China''s Good WarThe laws now enforced throughout the world are almost all modelled on systems developed in Europe in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. During two hundred years of colonial rule, Europeans exported their laws everywhere they could. But they weren''t filling a void: in many places, they displaced traditions that were already ancient when Vasco Da Gama first arrived in India. Where, then, did it all begin? And what has law been and done over the course of human history? In The Rule of Laws, pioneering anthropologist Fernanda Pirie traces the development of the world''s great legal systems - Chinese, Indian, Roman, and Islamic - and the innumerable smaller traditions they inspired.

The Two Hundred Years War - Dr Michael Livingston

A new and radically original account of the longest military conflict in European history, which challenges the conventional periodisation of the ‘Hundred Years War’ to consider a much longer period of Anglo-French conflict.Michael Livingston argues that the English lens through which the war has been viewed has led historians to define it in terms of English interests (most famously, the claim of the English Plantagenet king Edward III to be the rightful king of France), and that the events collectively labelled the ‘Hundred Years War’ are best seen as a sequence of steps in France’s struggle to define itself as a nation. For much of the period, France’s primary rival was indeed England. But it was by no means the only combatant. Burgundy stood in its way, too, as did Brittany, Flanders, Navarre and other rival powers.Viewing France as the primary engine driving the war leads Livingston to consider a much longer timespan, starting with the Anglo-French ‘Pirate War’ of 1292 (which swiftly escalated into a fight over England’s feudal possessions in Gascony) and ending with the marriage of Charles VIII of France to Anne of Brittany by which Brittany was subsumed into the French realm.

One Hundred Years Of Solitude - Gabriel García Márquez

In the book which put South America on the literary map, Marquez tells the haunting story of a community lost in the depths of that almighty continent where time passes slowly. A poetic masterpiece whose rich and powerful language easily survives the translation from Spanish, this is the most celebrated text of magic realism. The mysterious history of the Buendía family of the village of Macondo, which does nothing less than recapitulate the entire history of the human race, has had an influence on world literature unsurpassed by that of any other book of our era. In its lush understanding of the ways in which the political, the personal and the spiritual realms twine and untwine, in its couplings and parturitions, its battles and truces, One Hundred Years of Solitude contains a world we could never have imagined on our own. Yet, once encountered, it seems as familiar as the world of our own childhoods.

Aenigma / One Hundred Years of Anthroposophical Art - David Voda, Reinhold J. Fäth

It seems that the specialized literature dedicated to 20th-century art history has described and chronologically categorized all the major European art movements and groups. Almost no one had foreseen that the theosophist and anthroposophist Hilma af Klint would shake the codified history of abstract art in recent years. But Hilma af Klint was part of larger art movement which has received recognition for the first time in this monograph. The beginnings of the movement are linked to Munich and Stuttgart (1907-1913) but mainly to Dornach near Basel, where a reformist art colony around the building of the first Goetheanum was created. On the threshold of the First World War, cultural elites with an interest in esotericism from Western and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia and Russia found a refuge there so that they could be near Rudolf Steiner, the charismatic Austrian philosopher, nature scientist, pedagogist, architect and re-designer of the world. In addition to studies on anthroposophical art the monograph presents 125 artists who, between 1913-2013, were active in many fields from painting, sculpture, printmaking, the applied arts and design, textile art, toy-making, books and children's books to samizdat books, but also in architecture, stage design, eurythmy, poetry and modern music. The history of Salonica is one of forgotten alternatives and wrong choices, of identities assumed and discarded. Leaves of Grass - Walt Whitman

''I spring from the pages into your arms''Walt Whitman''s Leaves of Grass stands as one of the most influential and innovative literary works of the last two hundred years. After the book''s initial publication in June 1855, Whitman revised and expanded the project a further seven times, with subsequent editions appearing at regular intervals until his death in 1892. His revisions to particular poems were often substantial, and the addition of new poems to each edition so extensive, that the books dimensions altered dramatically. This edition introduces Whitmans ongoing labour of revision and renewal his successive responses to the shattering years that encompassed the American Civil War and its aftermath. Beginning with the first edition of 1855, it moves chronologically, selecting and including the most substantial poems and clusters as Whitman first included them. The Greek Revolution of 1821 and its Global Significance - Roderick Beaton

It has been called the "age of revolution". The white heat of it came in the decades either side of the year 1800. But it lasted a full century: from the American Declaration of Independence in 1776 to the great national "unifications" of Germany and Italy during the 1860s. Right in the middle of this long "age of revolution" and, as it turns out, the pivotal point within it, comes the Greek Revolution that broke out in the spring of 1821. Historians have been slow to recognise the key role of the Greek uprising in 1821, and the international recognition of Greece as a sovereign, independent state nine years later, in 1830, in this process that did so much to shape the geopolitics of the European continent, and indeed of much of the world. This little book sets out to explain what happened during these nine years to bring about such far-reaching (and surely unanticipated) consequences, and why the full significance of these events is only now coming to be appreciated, two hundred years later.

An Analysis of Martin Luther King Jr.'s Why We Can't Wait - Jason Xidias

Martin Luther King’s policy of non-violent protest in the struggle for civil rights in the United States during the second half of the twentieth century led to fundamental shifts in American government policy relating to segregation, and a cultural shift in the treatment of African Americans. King’s 1964 book Why We Can’t Wait creates strong, well-structured arguments as to why he and his followers chose to wage a nonviolent struggle in the fight to advance freedom and equality for black people following ‘three hundred years of humiliation, abuse, and deprivation.’ The author highlights a number of reasons why African Americans must demand their civil rights, including frustration at the lack of political will to tackle racism and inequality. Freedoms gained by African nations after years of colonial rule, as well as the US trumpeting its own values of freedom and equality in an ideological war with the Soviet Union, also played their part. King dealt with the counter-argument that civil rights for blacks would be detrimental to whites in America by explaining that racism is a disease that deeply penetrates both the white and the black psyche. His reasoning dictated that the brave act of nonviolent mass protest would provoke ... Unknown localization key: "more"

WINNER OF THE WOLFSON HISTORY PRIZE‘A brilliantly original book’ Financial Times‘One of the masterpieces of modern historical writing’ Daily TelegraphPaul Kennedy’s international bestseller is a sweeping account of five hundred years of fluctuating economic muscle and military might.Kennedy’s masterwork begins in the year 1500, at a time of various great centres of power including Minh China, the Ottomans, the rising Mughal state, the nations of Europe. But it was the latter which, through competition, economic growth and better military organisation, came to dominate the globe – until challenged later by Japan, the Soviet Union, and the United States. Now China, boosted by its own economic prowess, rises to the fore. Throughout this brilliant work, Kennedy persuasively demonstrates the interdependence of economic and military power, showing how an imbalance between the two has historically led to spectacular political disaster.Erudite and brilliantly original, The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers is essential reading for anyone with an interest in the politics of power.‘Tinged with a genius that unravels complexity’ Evening Standard ‘Outstanding’ Observer

Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire: Vols 1-3 - Edward Gibbon

Easily the most celebrated historical work in English, Gibbon''s account of the Roman empire was in its time a landmark in classical and historical scholarship and remains a remarkable fresh and powerful contribution to the interpretation of Roman history more than two hundred years after its first appearance. Its fame, however, rests more on the exceptional clarity, scope and force of its argument, and the brilliance of its style, which is still a delight to read. Furthermore, both argument and style embody the Enlightenment values of rationality, lucidity and order to which Gibbon so passionately subscribed and to which his HISTORY is such a magnificent monument.

The Plunder of Black America - Calvin Schermerhorn

The long history of the racial wealth gap in America told through the stories of seven Black families who struggled to build wealth over multiple generations  Wealth is central to the American pursuit of happiness and is an overriding measure of well-being. Yet wealth is conspicuously absent from African American households. Why do some 3.5 million Black American families have zero or negative wealth?  Historian Calvin Schermerhorn traces four hundred years of Black dispossession and decapitalization—what Frederick Douglass called plunder—through the stories of families who have strived to earn and keep the fruits of their toils. Their struggles reveal that the ever-evolving strategies to strip Black income and wealth have been critical to sustaining a structure of racialized disadvantage. These accounts also tell of the quiet heroism of those who worked to overcome obstacles and defy the plunder.  From the story of Anthony and Mary Johnson, abducted from Angola and brought to Virginia in 1619, to the enslaved Black workers dispossessed by the Custis-Washington family, to Venture Smith (born Broteer Furro), who purchased his freedom, to three generations of a family enslaved in the South who moved north after Emancipation, to the Tulsa massacre and the subprime ...
