Publikace je věnovaná dvacetiletí doby temna po okupaci Československa roku 1968. Navazuje na předchozí postupné prezentace sbírky fotografie Moravské galerie v Brně, založené roku 1962. Přibližně tři sta prací 126 autorů reprezentuje široké spektrum volné fotografické tvorby. Z nejznámějších fotografů jsou zastoupeni například Dagmar Hochová, Viktor Kolář, Jindřich Štreit, Jan Saudek, Tono Stano, Jan Svoboda. Poměrně detailní roztřídění tehdejší tvorby sleduje její smysl v několika kapitolách a podkapitolách. Jejich názvy začínají vždy slovem "alternativa". Alternativy byly společným jmenovatelem postojů oponujících prázdnotě oficiální kultury. Neoficiální kultura, k níž patřila i podstatná část fotografické tvorby, vytvářela prostor svobody, imaginární třetí stranu zdi rozdělující svět. Název výstavy reflektuje nejen bariéru mezi východním a západním světem, ale konkrétně také "rockovou operu" a film Pink Floyd The Wall (Zeď), vyjadřující obavy z totalitních tendencí překotně se vyvíjející civilizace. Poslední píseň alba je se svolením autora Rogera Waterse přetištěna v katalogu.
