What Your Baby Wants You to Know - Marie Derome
''A very insightful book, with tips and ideas useful for all parents'' - Manon LagreveLong before they can speak, our babies are brilliant communicators. They tell us - with their eyes and mouths, their little arms and legs, and all their funny noises - just how they feel and what they need. All we have to do as parents is listen. For child psychotherapist and mother of four Marie Derome, parenting is not about imposing ''rules'' on our babies. Rather, it is about being attentive, curious and ready to discover who our babies are so we can truly get to know them. Drawing on her clinical practice, alongside the latest neuroscientific findings, Marie shows us how to strengthen the bond we have with our babies in a new and empowering way. She also offers helpful insights to get us back on track when we feel exhausted and overwhelmed, and when loving our babies is not so easy. In What Your Baby Wants You to Know, Marie shows us how to nurture a loving connection with our babies so that they can grow happy and resilient and we can become the confident, responsive parents we always hoped to be.

Fuck It: Do What You Love - John Parkin
A recent Gallup poll in the US found that 70% of those in work didn''t enjoy their job. In his latest book, John C. Parkin brings the power of saying ''F**k It'' to the subject of doing what we love. In this highly entertaining and motivational book, John sets out to prove that when we do what we love, we''re actually more likely to be happier, healthier, wealthier and more successful. He addresses the significant blocks that people experience when they consider doing what they love, including: ''Doing what you love is for time-off, not work'', ''Doing what I love would be selfish'', ''I just don''t know what I love'' and ''I could never make a living from doing what I love''. Through no-nonsense ideas, fascinating facts and motivating calls to action, John brings us from pessimism to inspiration, so that our trail of thought becomes powered by ''F**k it, I can''t waste any more of my life'', ''F**k it, I will find a way to make this work'', ''F**k it, I will do what I love''. F**k It: Do What You Love is not just a book: it''s a call to action to get every single person to spend their precious time on this planet doing what they love.

The Monsters Know What They're Doing - Keith Ammann
In the course of a Dungeons & Dragons game, a Dungeon Master has to make one decision after another in response to player behaviour—and the better the players, the more unpredictable their behaviour! It’s easy for even an experienced DM to get bogged down in on-the-spot decision-making or to let combat devolve into a boring slugfest, with enemies running directly at the player characters and biting, bashing, and slashing away. In The Monsters Know What They’re Doing, Keith Ammann lightens the DM’s burden by helping you understand your monsters’ abilities and develop battle plans before your fifth edition D&D game session begins. Just as soldiers don’t whip out their field manuals for the first time when they’re already under fire, a DM shouldn’t wait until the PCs have just encountered a dozen bullywugs to figure out how they advance, fight, and retreat.Easy to read and apply, The Monsters Know What They're Doing is essential reading for every DM.

What Do We Know and What Should We Do About Tax Justice? - Alex Cobham
This book lays out what we know about the scale, history and impacts of tax abuse. From profit-shifting by multinational corporations to the exploitation of offshore tax havens. It sheds light on the people and organisations that enable tax abuse, and the stark social inequalities it creates.Crucially, it also explores what we can do about it. What are the practical realities of challenging the threats of tax injustice and of holding abusers accountable? What are the policies and institutional shifts we need to see and fight for?It is estimated that cross-border tax abuse accounts for around half a trillion dollars of lost revenue around the world each year. This is important. Alex Cobham shows us that tax is more than just business regulation or economic policy. It is a powerful tool for creating a fair and just society. It is our social superpower.Alex Cobham is an economist and chief executive of Tax Justice Network.Written by leading social scientists, the What Do We Know and What Should We Do About...? series offers concise, up-to-date overviews of issues often oversimplified, misrepresented or misunderstood and shows you how to enact change."Short, sharp and compelling." - Alex Preston, The Observer"If you want to learn a lot about what matters most, in as short a time as possible, this is the series for you."- Danny Dorling, 1971 Professor of Geography, University of Oxford

What Do We Know and What Should We Do About AI? - Ewa Luger
The idea of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has taken the world by storm. From fears over killer robots in sci-fi dystopias, to driverless cars in real life, we are both inspired and horrified by the prospect of an advanced intelligence that is not our own. Could AI take over the world? Will it take all of our jobs? Has Google really created a sentient chatbot, and is AI racing towards human intelligence, or is it just horribly misunderstood? These common questions point us towards an unknown and troubling future. What we do know is that we are in the midst of a hype cycle, with huge amounts of funding and focus galvanising progress. Whether AI truly lives up to this hype remains to be seen, but this once niche idea has suddenly evolved into a global multibillion dollar industry. In this short and accessible book, Ewa Luger explains what we mean when we talk about AI, explores how we got here, describes what we are doing about it, where the field is heading, and where we should go next. Written by leading social scientists, the What Do We Know and What Should We Do About...? series offers concise, up-to-date overviews of issues often oversimplified, misrepresented or misunderstood and shows you how to enact change."Short, sharp and compelling." - Alex Preston, The Observer"If you want to learn a lot about what matters most, in as short a time as possible, this is the series for you."- Danny Dorling, 1971 Professor of Geography, University of Oxford

What Do We Know and What Should We Do About Slavery? - Julia O'Connell Davidson
Slavery is a live issue today, but the people who talk about it as such are not all of a piece. Some insist the world is now plagued by the contemporary equivalent of transatlantic slavery, and call on us to combat "modern slavery". Others hold that the on-going devaluation and destruction of black life continues the logic of transatlantic slavery. They urge us to address the "afterlives" of racial chattel slavery. These two groupings provide different answers to the questions, "what do we know and what should we do about slavery?" This book reviews what is known about the issues at the heart of each perspective, and argues that the concept of "afterlives" is more helpful than that of "modern slavery" to those seeking to challenge injustice, violence, inequality and oppression in the twenty-first century.

Not What I Intended - Nancy Kress
Anyone who thinks that, at an early age, they can plan their entire life is mistaken.Nancy Kress has been exploring the possibilities of genetic engineering, human evolution, alien contact, artificial intelligence, and the future of the species for over forty years, with one eye on the bleeding edge of science and the other on the human soul and what makes it bleed. These stories, and the essays that explain her own history and worldview, compose a brief tourist’s guide for the world to come.In the title memoir, “Not What I Intended,” Kress discusses a childhood and community life where no young girl ever dreams of becoming a writer, and how she made those nondreams come true.“Patent Infringement” is a short piece inspired by Kress’s own time writing corporate copy that managed to predict COVID, COVID vaccines, and the patenting of genes for profit.“Laws of Survival” is a tale of first contact in which humanity is hardly the species the aliens are interested in—can an amateur dog trainer save the world the aliens have trashed, or at least herself?“Amy Lowell, Cixin Liu, Jane Austen, and the Art of Fiction” is a compelling essay about the human drive to create patterns, and what the cognitive limitations of patternmaking means for fiction … and for politics.“Machine Learning” is science fiction but might also be a work of psychological realism about the creation of AI and the healing of a scientist’s grief over the loss of his daughter. And featuring an in-depth Q&A with new Outspoken Authors series coeditor Nick Mamatas, who traveled up to Seattle to talk to Nancy about the future of plagues, sleepless nights, teaching science fiction writing, and dogs dogs dogs!

The Woman They Could Not Silence - Kate Moore
From the internationally bestselling author of The Radium Girls comes a dark but ultimately uplifting tale of a woman whose incredible journey still resonates today. Elizabeth Packard was an ordinary Victorian housewife and mother of six. That was, until the first Woman’s Rights Convention was held in 1848, inspiring Elizabeth and many other women to dream of greater freedoms. She began voicing her opinions on politics and religion — opinions that her husband did not share. Incensed and deeply threatened by her growing independence, he had her declared ‘slightly insane’ and committed to an asylum. Inside the Illinois State Hospital, Elizabeth found many other perfectly lucid women who, like her, had been betrayed by their husbands and incarcerated for daring to have a voice. But just because you are sane, doesn’t mean that you can escape a madhouse …Fighting the stigma of her gender and her supposed madness, Elizabeth embarked on a ceaseless quest for justice. It not only challenged the medical science of the day and saved untold others from suffering her fate, it ultimately led to a giant leap forward in human rights the world over.
