Knihu vytvořili bratři Tomáš a Martin Welsovi jako dárek pro své rodiče k Vánocům roku 1938. Podařilo se jim zachytit každodenní život jejich rodiny v Praze na konci třicátých let 20. století. Svazek je sestaven z dialogů a scén s výjevy z rodinného života Welsových, v mnoha ohledech dodnes typických, v jiných naopak nepředstavitelných. Autorem ilustrací je výtvarně nadaný mladší ze sourozenců Martin (1925-1944). V knize se střídá čeština s němčinou, tento stav odráží tehdejší jazykovou situaci v Praze. Dále se objevuje angličtina a francouzština. Všechny texty jsou přeloženy a grafické řešení umožňuje, že je kniha jazykově přístupná nejen českému čtenáři, ale i jinojazyčným mluvčím. Název Sancta Familia (Svatá rodina) vyjadřuje zkratkou rodinné vztahy: "Když mají dobrou náladu, mají se moc rádi, a někdy se hádají tak, že by se roztrhli. Rodina, jak má být."V knize jsou zaznamenány obyčejné situace: Martin prochází po ulici Na Příkopě s matkou Idou - mluví německy; na Můstku přechází do češtiny - tak, jak se na Václavském náměstí slušelo -, zastaví se v automatu Koruna pro vepřenku a limonádu. Později, když všichni sedí doma u jídelního stolu, vypukne vášnivá debata, proč Martin víc nesportuje - mohl by alespoň chodit bruslit - a proč má trojku z matiky. V jiné scéně otec Rudolf a jeho obchodní partner diskutují o nejnovějším politickém vývoji ve světě. Jinde se spekuluje o tom, zda má Tomáš přítelkyni, a jinde zase, kdy hodlá Idina přítelkyně paní Lederkrempová emigrovat. Bratři v knize, která vznikla necelé tři měsíce po podpisu Mnichovské dohody, předjímají budoucnost: představují si, že na jaře 1939 bude Tomáš na cestě do Ameriky. S matkou Martin vtipkuje, že, když tam jednou bude celá rodina, budou moci v Americe otevřít rodinnou restauraci s vepřenkami. I přes humor a láskyplné škádlení prosvítá nejistota a obavy. "Rodina se do budoucna nemá čeho bát," píše ale Martin na konci knihy, "doufejme, že brzy najde nový domov a bude pokračovat v klidu v této divadelní hře." Už v říjnu 1938 požádala celá rodina o emigrační vízum do Spojených států. Rudolf a Ida se oba narodili do západočeských židovských rodin. O Rudolfových předcích, chudých maloobchodních z Rokycanska, se můžeme dočíst v pamětech U "Bernatů",které napsal jeho otec Šimon Wels v roce 1919. Tomášovi je osmnáct, Martin je o pět let mladší. Výtvarné nadání zdědil Martin asi po otcovi. V době vzniku knihy byl Rudolf Wels již velmi úspěšným architektem, autorem řady zajímavých a originálních projektů. Události se ale odvíjely jinak, než jak si bratři přáli: Tomášovi se podařilo odejít včas. V dubnu 1939, krátce po březnové okupaci, utekl přes Polsko do Velké Británie, kde za války sloužil v britské armádě. Martinovi a jeho rodičům Idě a Rudolfovi byla žádost o vízum do Spojených států odložena. Byli zavražděni v Osvětimi 8. března 1944. Tomáš se vrátil do Prahy hned po válce, ale nikoho tu už neměl. To, co se z rodinného archivu zachovalo, vzal s sebou zpátky do Anglie. Později měl svou rodinu, o minulosti ale nikdy nemluvil a nikdy neotevřel krabici, ve které se zachovala i kniha Sancta Familia.

The motto Národ sobě - "From the Nation to Itself” - inscribed over the proscenium arch of Prague's National Theatre symbolizes the importance theatre holds for the Czechs. During the National Awakening of the 19th century, theatre took the place of politics, becoming an instrument of national identity in the hands of the revivalists. In what was then part of a German-speaking empire, the Czechs devised a complex and evocative theatre language made up of allegory, allusion, juxtaposition, games, wordplay, legend, history, illusion and music. A sophisticated avant-garde theatre flowered in Czechoslovakia between the wars, and became a symbol of independence during the Nazi occupation. It survived Socialist Realism and Stalinism to blossom again in the "Golden Sixties” when Prague became "the theatre capital of Europe” (Kenneth Tynan) and a generation of theatre and film directors (Radok, Grossman, Schorm) and playwrights (Havel, Kundera, Topol) were at the forefront of the Prague Spring. Reprisals took place after the 1968 Soviet invasion when, under "normalization,” hardline Communists tried to silence the voices of the ‘60s; thousands were forced into internal and external emigration. The theatre culture, however, flexible and experienced from previous repression, again provided a basis of opposition to totalitarianism. For two decades it operated in the provisional spaces of culture houses, studios, gymnasiums, bars, trade union halls, art galleries and living rooms. Strategies were devised and implemented to bring freedom back to the theatre and society. A strong sense of justice and ethics intensified the mutual commitment of theatres and audiences, leading the way to the Velvet Revolution of 1989 and the installation of a playwright as President.

Theatre Studios explores the history of the studio model in England, first established by Konstantin Stanislavsky, Jacques Copeau and others in the early twentieth century, and later developed in the UK primarily by Michel Saint-Denis, George Devine, Michael Chekhov and Joan Littlewood, whose studios are the focus of this study. Cornford offers in-depth accounts of the radical, collective work of these leading theatre companies of the mid-twentieth century, considering the models of ensemble theatre-making that they developed and their remnants in the newly publicly-funded UK theatre establishment of the 1960s. In the process, this book develops an approach to understanding the politics of artistic practices rooted in the work of John Dewey, Antonio Gramsci and the standpoint feminists. It concludes by considering the legacy of the studio movement for twenty-first-century theatre, partly by tracking its echoes in the work of Secret Theatre at the Lyric, Hammersmith (2013–2015).
