A Brief History of the Samurai - Clements Jonathan
''Clements has a knack for writing suspenseful sure-footed conflict scenes: His recounting of the Korean invasion led by samurai and daimyo Toyotomi Hideyoshi reads like a thriller. If you''re looking for a samurai primer, Clements'' guide will keep you on the hook'' Japan Times, reviewed as part of an Essential Reading for Japanophiles series From a leading expert in Japanese history, this is one of the first full histories of the art and culture of the Samurai warrior. The Samurai emerged as a warrior caste in Medieval Japan and would have a powerful influence on the history and culture of the country from the next 500 years. Clements also looks at the Samurai wars that tore Japan apart in the 17th and 18th centuries and how the caste was finally demolished in the advent of the mechanized world.

The View Out of My Window - Goran Potkonjak
Since 2015, Swiss photographer Goran Potkonjak has visited ten major Asian cities: Bangkok, Busan, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Shenzhen, Singapore, Taipei, and Tokyo. His large-scale art project documents these megacities and their architecture through images taken from two different viewpoints: from the upper floors of high-rise buildings and at street level. The result is a multilayered, precise view of each of these vibrant metropolises. The View Out of My Window brings together 200 photographs from this artistic research - 20 views of each city. The book thus reveals the essence of our urban present in a fascinating way: such vast cities thrive on their contradictions, in which inexhaustible energy often alternates with surprising calmness. Goran Potkonjak’s images impressively illustrate this balance.Text in English and German.

The View from Somewhere - Lewis Raven Wallace
A look at the history and myth of the objective journalist and how this ideal has been used to silence marginalized voices.  In The View from Somewhere, Lewis Raven Wallace dives deep into the history of “objectivity†in journalism and how its been used to gatekeep and silence marginalized writers as far back as Ida B. Wells. At its core, this is a book about fierce journalists who have pursued truth and transparency and sometimes been punished for it—not just by tyrannical governments but by journalistic institutions themselves. He highlights the stories of journalists who question “objectivity†with sensitivity and passion: Desmond Cole of the Toronto Star; New York Times reporter Linda Greenhouse; Pulitzer Prize-winner Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah; Peabody-winning podcaster John Biewen; Guardian correspondent Gary Younge; former Buzzfeed reporter Meredith Talusan; and many others. Wallace also shares his own experiences as a midwestern transgender journalist and activist who was fired from his job as a national reporter for public radio for speaking out against “objectivity†in coverage of Trump and white supremacy.  With insightful steps through history, Wallace stresses that journalists have never been mere passive observers. The Parallax View - Mark Campbell
Alan J. Pakula''s The Parallax View (1974) is a renowned example of the paranoid conspiracy thriller, a genre that was a marker of the 1970s. The period was haunted by the murders of John F Kennedy (1963), Malcolm X (1965), Martin Luther King (1968), and Robert Kennedy (1968), together with the crimes of the Manson family, Altamont, the Vietnam War, and the Watergate scandal. Mark Campbell''s study of the film situates it within this historical moment of increasing paranoia and conspiracy, analyzing the ways in which it not only reflected, but also actively constructed, this febrile worldview. He contextualizes the film as an adaptation of Loren Singer''s 1970 pulp novel by the same name, and highlights the role of influential cinematographer, Gordon Willis, in constructing the visual style that was essential to the filmic representation of paranoia. Focusing on the film itself, Campbell provides a detailed analysis of key scenes, particularly the central six-minute brainwashing sequence which featured imagery drawn from pop culture, advertising slogans, and violent imagery. He examines Pakula''s use of the film-within-a-film visual trope, and how the scene refers to the then widely-held suspicion that television and mass media were tools of psychological “conditioningâ€, highlighting how this ... When the Sahara Was Green - Martin Williams
The little-known history of how the Sahara was transformed from a green and fertile land into the largest hot desert in the worldThe Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world, equal in size to China or the United States. Yet, this arid expanse was once a verdant, pleasant land, fed by rivers and lakes. The Sahara sustained abundant plant and animal life, such as Nile perch, turtles, crocodiles, and hippos, and attracted prehistoric hunters and herders. What transformed this land of lakes into a sea of sands? When the Sahara Was Green describes the remarkable history of Earth’s greatest desert—including why its climate changed, the impact this had on human populations, and how scientists uncovered the evidence for these extraordinary events. From the Sahara’s origins as savanna woodland and grassland to its current arid incarnation, Martin Williams takes us on a vivid journey through time. He describes how the desert’s ancient rocks were first fashioned, how dinosaurs roamed freely across the land, and how it was later covered in tall trees. Along the way, Williams addresses many questions: Why was the Sahara previously much wetter, and will it be so again? Did humans contribute to its desertification? What ... The View From the Corner Shop - Patricia Malcolmson, Kathleen Hey
A lively diary chronicling the ups and downs of running a grocery shop in a Yorkshire town during the rationing years of the Second World War Kathleen Hey spent the war years helping her sister and brother-in-law run a grocery shop in the Yorkshire town of Dewsbury. From July 1941 to July 1946 she kept a diary for the Mass-Observation project, recording the thoughts and concerns of the people who used the shop. What makes Kathleen's account such a vivid and compelling read is the immediacy of her writing. People were pulling together on the surface ('Bert has painted the V-sign on the shop door…', she writes) but there are plenty of tensions underneath. The shortage of food and the extreme difficulty of obtaining it is a constant thread, which dominates conversation in the town, more so even than the danger of bombardment and the war itself. Sometimes events take a comic turn. A lack of onions provokes outrage among her customers, and Kathleen writes, 'I believe they think we have secret onion orgies at night and use them all up.' The Road Washes Out in Spring – A Poet's Memoir of Living Off the Grid - Baron Wormser
A new edition of an evergreen back-to-nature book in the tradition of Thoreau.  For nearly twenty-five years, poet Baron Wormser and his family lived in a house in Maine with no electricity or running water. They grew much of their own food, carried water by hand, and read by the light of kerosene lamps. They considered themselves part of the “back to the land†movement, but their choice to live off the grid was neither a statement nor a protest: they simply had built their house too far from the road and could not afford to bring in power lines. Over the years, they settled into a life that centered on what Thoreau would have called “the essential facts.†In this graceful meditation, Wormser similarly spurns ideology in favor of observation, exploration, and reflection. “When we look for one thread of motive,†he writes, “we are, in all likelihood, deceiving ourselves.†His refusal to be satisfied with the obvious explanation, the single thread of motive, makes him a keen and sympathetic observer of his neighbors and community, a perceptive reader of poetry and literature, and an honest and unselfconscious analyst of his own responses to the natural world. The Never Was - Tyler Knott Gregson
A poetic celebration embracing our unfinished, imperfect, and authentic selves. The Never Was is a deeply personal return from bestselling poet Tyler Knott Gregson. Known for his intimate typewritten verse, Gregson turns inward with raw honesty, reflecting on identity, diagnosis, and the quiet beauty in the incomplete. Interwoven with new poems, these pieces form a deeply human tapestry of vulnerability, self-discovery, and grace. This is a book for anyone who has felt unseen, misunderstood, or like they didn’t quite fit. The Never Was is a celebration of the imperfect, a testament to the healing power of art, and a reminder that even the fragments can hold a whole world.

The World That Never Was - Alex Butterworth
The last years of the nineteenth century saw the birth of a new phenomenon: international terrorism. Bombings and assassinations shook the great cities of Europe and America, threatening social order. Fiendish networks of anarchist conspiritors were blamed and the public whipped into a frenzy of anxiety. The reality was rather different. These dramatic events were only the most visible part of a longer, clandestine struggle waged between the forces of revolution and reaction, in which little was as it seemed. Alex Butterworth interweaves group biography, cultural history and meticulous detective work to create a revelatory account of the age. Both intimate and panoramic, it is a story with uncanny resonances for today.

A tale of passion and romance between a Japanese schoolteacher and a doglike man, from the prize-winning author of The Last Children of TokyoMitsuko, a schoolteacher at the Kitamura school, inspires both rumour and curiosity in the parents of her students because of her unconventional manner - not least when she tells the children the fable of a princess whose hand in marriage is promised to a dog she is intimate with. And when a young man with sharp canine teeth turns up at the schoolteacher's home and declares he's 'here to stay', the romantic - and sexual - relationship that develops intrigues the community, some of whom have suspicions about the man's identity and motives. Her journey, rich in historical authenticity and imaginative storytelling, offers insights that resonate across the centuries."—Christina Baker Kline, New York Times bestselling author of The ExilesFor readers of Hilary Mantel and Madeline Miller, a deeply engrossing work of biographical historical fiction—a tale about a woman of the Shakespeare family struggling to manage both her private grief and public danger.  At the age of sixty-one, Judith Shakespeare, a midwife-apothecary and twin of the long-dead Hamnet, must flee provincial Stratford on horseback to avoid arrest for witchcraft. View from Within
Over the last decade there has been a resurgence of interest in the scientific study of consciousness — an area that has been largely ignored since the time of William James. This renaissance has primarily been stimulated by developments in PET, fMRI and other brain-scanning technology that enable scientists to pinpoint the neural correlates of conscious experience with ever-increasing accuracy. However, the study of conscious experience itself has not kept pace with these advances in third-person methodologies. If anything, the standard approaches to examining the ''view from within'' involve little more than cataloging its readily accessible components. Thus the study of lived subjective experience is still at the level of Aristotelian science. This has led many to deny that there could possibly be such a thing as a truly scientific study of conscious experience, or at least to ask: can one be objective about the subjective? Drawing on a wide range of approaches — from phenomenology to meditation — THE VIEW FROM WITHIN examines the possibility of a disciplined approach to the study of subjective states. The focus is on the practical issues involved.
