Dazzling Darkness - 2nd edition - Rachel Mann
Dazzling Darkness is a true story about searching for oneâ ™s authentic self in the company of the Living God. Rachel Mann has died many â ˜deathsâ ™ in the process, not the least of which was a change of sex, as well as coming to terms with chronic illness and disability. Through these experiences she has discovered that darkness is as much a positive place as a negative one, inhabited by the Living God â “ the Dark God, the Hidden God. This is the God that many of us, because we try to make our lives safe and comfortable, are too afraid to meet. This is the God who is most alive in those things we commonly associate with the Dark â “ failure, loss and brokenness. The Christian church has legitimated certain ways of talking about God â “ male, fatherly, monarchical and so on. Many believe these descriptors tell the exhaustive truth about God. In accepting the complexity of her sexuality and identity, Rachel Mann has been able to explore with a greater freedom what God might look like to an â ˜unconventional creatureâ ™ like her. This second edition of Rachelâ ™s passionate, celebrated and nuanced book has been thoroughly revised and extended, with new chapters which re-examine what it means to live with ill-health and being trans nearly a decade on from the original publication of Dazzling Darkness. Rachel Mann is an Anglican priest, poet, scholar and broadcaster. The author of eleven books, her work has been shortlisted for the international Michael Ramsey Prize, and has been called â ˜exceptionalâ ™ (Rowan Williams) and â ˜astonishingâ ™ (Michael Symmons Roberts). She regularly broadcasts on BBC Radio 2 and 4.

I Feel Love - Rachel Nuwer
Longlisted for the PEN / E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award Riveting. --Bessel van der Kolk, MD, author of The Body Keeps the Score The unlikely story of how the psychedelic drug MDMA emerged from the shadows to the forefront of a medical revolution--and the potential it may hold to help us thrive.Few drugs in history have generated as much controversy as MDMA--or held as much promise. Once vilified as a Schedule I substance that would supposedly eat holes in usersâ ™ brains, MDMA (also known as Molly or Ecstasy) is now being hailed as a therapeutic agent that could transform the field of mental health and outpace psilocybin and ketamine as the first psychedelic approved for widespread clinical use. In I Feel Love, science journalist Rachel Nuwer separates fact from fantasy, hope from hype, in the drugâ ™s contested history and still-evolving future. Evidence from scientific trials suggests MDMA, properly administered, can be startlingly effective at relieving the effects of trauma. Results from other studies point to its usefulness for individual and couples therapy; for treating depression, alcohol addiction, and eating disorders; and for cultivating personal growth. Yet scientists are still racing to discover how MDMA achieves these outcomes, a mystery that is taking them into the inner recesses of the brain and the deep history of evolution. With its power to dismantle psychological defenses and induce feelings of empathy, self-compassion, and love, MDMA may answer profound questions about how we became human, and how to heal our broken social bonds. From cutting-edge labs to pulsing club floors to the intimacy of the therapistâ ™s couch, Nuwer guides readers through a cultural and scientific upheaval that is rewriting our understanding of our brains, our selves, and the space between.

It was also a scene with its own values and its own unique interactions with fame, record labels, MTV, drugs, and success. As a veteran music journalist, Mike Ayers has been to more than 130 Phish shows, 20 Grateful Dead shows, and countless others by the bands profiled in this book. In the mid-90s, he stumbled upon a job working backstage for Phish as a prep cook in exchange for all-access passes for the night’s show, and ended up doing this for years. Later in the decade, he dabbled in the taping scene and recorded numerous shows that are still circulated online today. Filled with anecdotes and stories directly from the musicians, promoters, managers, roadies, producers, label executives, and fans that lived this scene, Sharing in the Groove is a fun, fast-paced oral history that will appeal to music lovers everywhere.

A Pilgrimage of the Heart - Kevin Goodrich
A lively, devotional, and practical guide to the teachings of the fourteenth- century English Mystical Tradition Introduces the English mystical tradition and the spiritual counsel of spiritual writers like Walter Hilton and Julian of Norwich Invites readers to intentionally make their life a pilgrimage, using Hilton’s wisdom as a guide A lively, devotional, and practical guide to the teachings of the fourteenth century English Mystical Tradition. A Pilgrimage of the Heart introduces readers to the most well-known mystics and spiritual writers of this period, including Walter Hilton, Richard Rolle, the anonymous author of The Cloud of Unknowing, Julian of Norwich, and Margery Kempe. Walter Hilton gave up a promising career in law to pursue a life of greater spiritual commitment. His spiritual guidance, captured in written form in the books and letters he wrote, was widely read and circulated in the Middle Ages. Since his time, Hilton has remained a trusted source for spiritual wisdom, inspiration, and direction. In this down to earth book, Father Goodrich invites readers to intentionally make their life a pilgrimage, a sacred journey taken for a sacred purpose. In a Pilgrimage of the Heart, readers from a wide variety of backgrounds, spiritual experiences, and denominations will find encouragement for their relationship with God, others, and themselves. Along the way they will learn engaging bits of history, theology, and spirituality through interesting stories and helpful illustrations. Editorial Reviews “Fr Kevin evokes vividly the landscape and context of the fourteenth century English mystics, and with gentleness and some wit directs us to follow in their footsteps through ‘the hill country of the spirit’. This is an enticing book, full of practical directives for us to make of our own lives a spiritual pilgrimage to the heavenly Jerusalem in the company of Walter Hilton, Julian and many other mothers and fathers of the English way.” ~ The Rev d Canon Dr Alison Milbank, Associate Professor of Literature and Theology at the University of Nottingham, author of The Once and Future Parish “Come and see. Walter Hilton is not only a mystic to admire from afar, a static representative of a certain sort of English spirituality, but a surefooted trail guide for those yet at the beginning of the way, on the foothills of the spiritual path. While armchair travellers will be edified, this book is for the rucksack rather than the coffee table, addressed to those urged on by a perhaps-inexplicable longing, shoes tied, staves in hand, ready to set off for Jerusalem. And to set out, not across some generic or idealized terrain but across the specific landscape of their own life circumstances. This book is, above all, an invitation from Walter Hilton and his four near contemporaries to come apprentice to the spiritual craft, to feel the heft of their tools, and their edge. Whatever the reader may do to keep body and soul together, they too may become learners in the kingdom of heaven, and brave the grit, grace and beauty of the way.” ~ The Rev’d. Sr. Hilary Crupi, OJN, Prioress of the Order of Julian of Norwich “We’re invited to become friends with these great mystical companions in order to make our own pilgrimages; whether activist or contemplative, especially devout or just travellers on the way. Here is rich fayre more than sufficient for transformative journeys.” ~ The Very Rev’d David Monteith, Dean of Canterbury “By writing in the vernacular English of his day, Walter Hilton sought to bring the mystical tradition to a wide-ranging audience. In much the same spirit, Kevin Goodrich employs a conversational tone to invite spiritual seekers to pursue the contemplative journey, enriched by the wisdom of Hilton and his contemporaries. Goodrich has contributed to the present resurgence of interest in spirituality by directing his readers to the rich legacy of fourteenth-century English mysticism.” ~ The Rev’d Dr. Julia Gatta is the Bishop Frank A. Juhan Professor of Pastoral Theology in the School of Theology, the University of the South, Sewanee, author, The Pastoral Art of the English Mystics “The English mystics are a rich treasure and deep well of spiritual wisdom that deserve to be better known. Kevin Goodrich s A Pilgrimage of the Heart is an excellent introduction to these saints of the church. Because the Christian life is a pilgrimage, we need capable guides and the English mystics are excellent leaders. But more importantly, Goodrich is an excellent guide to these guides so that we can get to know them well, entrusting ourselves to their guidance. There is a lot of practical and helpful advice in this book that will benefit all who read it on pilgrimage. ~ The Rev’d Dr. Greg Peters, Professor of Medieval and Spiritual Theology in the Torrey Honors College, Biola University; and the Servants of Christ Research Professor of Monastic Studies and Ascetical Theology at Nashotah House Theologi

The Sense of Wonder - Rachel Carson
First published a half-century ago, Rachel Carson s award-winning The Sense of Wonder remains the classic guide to introducing children to the marvels of nature. In 1955, acclaimed conservationist Rachel Carson—author of Silent Spring—began work on an essay that she would come to consider one of her life’s most important projects. Her grandnephew, Roger Christie, had visited Carson that summer at her cottage in Maine, and together they had wandered the surrounding woods and tide pools. Teaching Roger about the natural wonders around them, Carson began to see them anew herself, and wanted to relate that same magical feeling to others who might hope to introduce a child to the beauty of nature. “If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder,” writes Carson, “he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in.”The Sense of Wonder is a timeless volume that will be passed on from generation to generation, as treasured as the memory of an early-morning walk when the song of a whippoorwill was heard as if for the first time. Featuring serene color photographs from renowned photographer Nick Kelsh, “this beautifully illustrated edition makes a fine gift for new and prospective mothers and fathers” (Gregory McNamee), and helps us all to tap into the extraordinary power of the natural world.

London to Walsingham Camino - The Pilgrimage Guide - Andy Bull
A pilgrim path that offers a wonderful long-distance route, on footpaths and quiet lanes, across the glorious east of England.London to Walsingham Camino guidebook is a full colour guide to walking the re-established pilgrimage route from the Church of St Magnus the Martyr, with its shrine to Our Lady of Walsingham to the Anglican and Catholic shrines at Walsingham in Norfolk. The experience of walking the route is described in this illustrated book with the step by step walking directions and gpx files being downloaded from the Trailblazer website. The whole 177.8 mile pilgrimage could be accomplished by a fit walker in a fortnight or less. But maybe you want to walk for fewer miles each day, or just at weekends, or on odd days when you have the time and energy. This guide caters for multiple approaches.Walsingham was England⠙s Nazareth. A fantastical tale brought pilgrims ⠓ kings, queens, and commoners alike ⠓ to Walsingham in the Middle Ages. In 1061 a Walsingham noblewoman, Lady Richeldis de Faverches, had a vision in which the Virgin Mary transported her soul to Nazareth and showed her the house where the Holy Family once lived, and in which the Annunciation of Archangel Gabriel, foretelling Jesus⠙s birth, occurred. She was told to build a replica of the house in Walsingham, and did so. The Holy House, initially a simple wooden structure, later richly decorated with gold and precious jewels, became a shrine and attracted pilgrims to Walsingham from all over Europe. Numerous kings travelled as pilgrims to Walsingham.Walsingham was by far the most important pilgrim shrine in England until Henry VIII outlawed pilgrimage and the veneration of saints in 1538. It was much more popular than Canterbury. Not only that: in the whole of the Christian world it was eclipsed by just three other places: Jerusalem, Rome, and Santiago de Compostela. Those places have enjoyed an unbroken tradition of pilgrimage and veneration stretching back a millennium or more. Not Walsingham. It reverted to being just a village in Norfolk once the pilgrims stopped coming. The road from London ceased to be the most important route in England, and faded into obscurity. For 400 years, no pilgrims walked to Walsingham. Since the 1930s, when both Catholic and Anglican shrines were re-established here, Walsingham has undergone a revival. It draws around 300,000 pilgrims each year, but hardly any of them walk much more than the final Holy Mile, and only a few church and other groups trace the full route from London. The London to Walsingham Camino guidebook is part of an attempt to change that: to re-establish a walking route which, while being as true to the original way as possible, takes account of the modern realities on the ground. A pilgrim path that offers a wonderful long-distance route, on footpaths and quiet lanes, across the glorious east of England. A truly pleasurable and uplifting walking experience.

The Years of the Wizard - Rachel Morris
All things were believable back then – wizards, alchemy, fairies, angels. This is the story of those magical times.A lyrical and highly atmospheric exploration of the lives of Tudor and Renaissance magicians, men from Dee to Kepler to Bruno, who were also scientists, astrologers, mathematicians and alchemists. Their studies, books and ideas still permeate scientific history - as well as literature and film from Philip Pullman to CS Lewis, but what do we know of the rest of their households; the lovers, wives, mothers and daughters? In The Years of the Wizard, Rachel Morris also vividly reimagines the less documented lives of the magician s families and lovers. From those who supported the travelling households - packing up the libraries, feeding the assistants, entertaining the patrons, educating the children - as well as those archiving, documenting and collaborating with their magical work. With vivid storytelling Rachel Morris magically animates both the known past lives of these extraordinary men and the imaginary stories of the less documented women, elders and children in this era of discovery and magic.

Sins of the Shovel - Rachel Morgan
An incisive history of early American archaeologyâ ”from reckless looting to professional scienceâ ”and the fieldâ ™s unfinished efforts to make amends today, told with passion, indignation, and a dash of suspense (New York Times). American archaeology was forever scarred by an 1893 business proposition between cowboy-turned-excavator Richard Wetherill and socialites-turned-antiquarians Fred and Talbot Hyde. Wetherill had stumbled upon Mesa Verdeâ ™s spectacular cliff dwellings and started selling artifacts, but with the Hydesâ ™ money behind him, wellâ ”thereâ ™s no telling what they might discover. Thus begins the Hyde Exploring Expedition, a nine-year venture into Utahâ ™s Grand Gulch and New Mexicoâ ™s Chaco Canyon thatâ ”coupled with other less-restrained lootersâ ”so devastates Indigenous cultural sites across the American Southwest that Congress passes first-of-their-kind regulations to stop the carnage. As the money dries up, tensions rise, and a once-profitable enterprise disintegrates, setting the stage for a tragic murder. Sins of the Shovel is a story of adventure and business gone wrong and how archaeologists today grapple with this complex heritage. Through the story of the Hyde Exploring Expedition, practicing archaeologist Rachel Morgan uncovers the uncomfortable links between commodity culture, contemporary ethics, and the broader political forces that perpetuate destructive behavior today. The result is an unsparing and even-handed assessment of American archaeologyâ ™s sins, past and present, and how the field is working toward atonement.

The Edge of the Sea - Rachel Carson
In The Edge of the Sea Rachel Carson introduces us to the strange and beautiful place where the sea meets the land. She explores a tide pool, an inaccessible cave, and watches a lone crab on the shore at midnight. From these, and other, encounters she offers us not just a scientifically accurate study of the ecology of the seashore, but also a hauntingly beautiful account of the fragile balance of life found at the edge of the sea.The Edge of the Sea, like all her writing, sounds a prophetic alarm for the damage mankind is doing to the natural world, but also offers us inspiration: here is beauty, here is something worth saving.

The Santiago Pilgrimage - Jean-Christophe Rufin
Whenever I was asked: Why did you go to Santiago? , I had a hard time answering. How could I explain to those who had not done it that the way has the effect - if not the virtue - to make you forget all reasons that led you to become involved in it in the first place. Each year, tens of thousands of backpackers (Christian pilgrims and many others) set out from either their front doorstep or from popular starting points across Europe, to Santiago de Compostela. Most travel by foot, others ride a bicycle, and a few of them travel as did some of their medieval counterparts, on horseback or with a donkey. In addition to those who undertake a religious pilgrimage, the majority are hikers who walk the way for non-religious reasons: travel, sport, or simply the challenge of spending weeks walking in a foreign land. Also, many consider the experience as a spiritual adventure, with a view to removing themselves from the bustle of modern life. Jean-Christophe Rufin followed this Northern Way to Santiago de Compostela by foot, on over eight hundred kilometers. Much less crowded than the usual pilgrimage route, this one runs along the Basque and Cantabrian coasts in Spain and through the wild mountains of Asturias and Galicia.Translated from the French by Malcolm Imrie and Martina Dervis

The Harold Nicolson Diaries - Harold Nicolson
One of the great 20th century political diaries A tremendous read SPECTATOR One stops to marvel at the achievement. Honesty, decency, modesty, magnanimity, are stamped on every page, as evident as the wit EVENING STANDARDHarold Nicolson was one of the three great political diarists of the 20th century (along with Chips Channon and Alan Clark). Nicolson was an MP (Conservative, 1935-45, who also flirted with Labour after WWII). He had previously been in the Foreign Office and attended the Paris Peace Conference in 1919, and material from his period is included in this new edition for the first time. Nicolson never achieved high office, but rarely a day went by when he didn t record what was going on at Westminster. He socialised widely, was married to the poet and author Vita Sackville-West, and together they created the famous garden at Sissinghurst. Both were bi-sexuals and had affairs outside their marriage. This new edition also draws on diary entries and letters previously considered too sensitive for inclusion. The diversity of Harold Nicolson s interests and the irony in his writing make his diary a highly entertaining record of his life and times, as well as a document of great historical value.

Fruit of the Dead - Rachel Lyon
An electric contemporary reimagining of the myth of Persephone and Demeter set over the course of one summer on a lush private island, exploring who holds the power in a modern underworld. Camp counsellor Cory Ansel, eighteen and aimless, afraid to face her high-strung single mother in New York, is no longer sure where home is when the father of one of her campers offers an alternative. The CEO of a Fortune 500 pharmaceutical company, Rolo Picazo is middle-aged, divorced, magnetic. He is also intoxicated by Cory. When Rolo proffers a childcare job (and an NDA), Cory quiets an internal warning and allows herself to be ferried to his private island off the coast of Maine. Plied with luxury and opiates manufactured by his company, she continues to tell herself she’s in charge. Her mother, Emer, head of a teetering agricultural NGO, senses otherwise. When her daughter seemingly disappears, Emer crosses land and sea to heed a cry for help she alone is convinced she hears. Alternating between the two women’s perspectives, Fruit of the Dead incorporates its mythic inspiration with a light touch and devastating precision. The White Lady - Fry Helen
A major new history of the two most important British secret service networks in the First and Second World Wars  Intelligence gathering was essential to both sides in the First and Second World Wars. At the heart of MI6⠙s efforts were two key networks in Belgium. Agents in The White Lady acted as couriers, radio operators and spies to facilitate the end of German control. And, when war broke out again two decades later, the leaders of the network regrouped and established a successor: The Clarence Service.  Helen Fry charts the history of these pivotal intelligence networks. Drawing on recently declassified information, Fry examines who the agents were, how they were recruited, and how the intelligence they gathered directly impacted the outcome of both wars. Operators in the field sent over eight hundred radio messages to London and delivered more than a thousand reports, including groundbreaking information on Hitler⠙s secret weapon the V-1. This is a compelling account of the agents who risked their lives and found ingenious ways to smuggle intelligence out of occupied Belgium.
