The Uninhabitable Earth - David Wallace-Wells
**SUNDAY TIMES AND THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER** An epoch-defining book Matt Haig If you read just one work of non-fiction this year, it should probably be this David Sexton, Evening StandardSelected as a Book of the Year 2019 by the Sunday Times, Spectator and New StatesmanA Waterstones Paperback of the Year and shortlisted for the Foyles Book of the Year 2019Longlisted for the PEN / E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award It is worse, much worse, than you think. The slowness of climate change is a fairy tale, perhaps as pernicious as the one that says it isn t happening at all, and if your anxiety about it is dominated by fears of sea-level rise, you are barely scratching the surface of what terrors are possible, even within the lifetime of a teenager today.Over the past decades, the term Anthropocene has climbed into the popular imagination - a name given to the geologic era we live in now, one defined by human intervention in the life of the planet. But however sanguine you might be about the proposition that we have ravaged the natural world, which we surely have, it is another thing entirely to consider the possibility that we have only provoked it, engineering first in ignorance and then in denial a climate system that will now go to war with us for many centuries, perhaps until it destroys us. In the meantime, it will remake us, transforming every aspect of the way we live-the planet no longer nurturing a dream of abundance, but a living nightmare.

A jestli jste do současného klimatického dramatu ponořeni, Wallace-Wellsův hlas a perspektiva vás ještě víc vyburcuje. - The Guardian

The Fragile Earth - David Remnick, Henry Finder
A classic collection of the New Yorker s most urgent and groundbreaking reporting from the front lines of the climate emergencyIn 1989, just one year after climatologist James Hansen first came before a Senate committee and testified that the earth was now warmer than it had ever been in recorded history, thanks to humankind s heedless consumption of fossil fuels, New Yorker writer Bill McKibben published a deeply reported and considered piece on climate change and what it could mean for the planet. At the time, the piece was to some speculative to the point of alarmist; read now, McKibben s work is heroically prescient. Since then, the New Yorker has devoted enormous attention to climate change, describing the causes of the crisis, the political and ecological conditions we now find ourselves in, and the scenarios and solutions we face. The Fragile Earth tells the story of climate change - its past, present, and future - taking readers from Greenland to the Great Plains, and into both laboratories and rain forests. It features some of the best writing on global warming from the last three decades, including Bill McKibben s seminal essay The End of Nature, the first piece to popularize both the science and politics of climate change for a general audience, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning work of Elizabeth Kolbert, as well as Kathryn Schulz, Dexter Filkins, Jonathan Franzen, Ian Frazier, Eric Klinenberg, and others. The result, in its range, depth, and passion, promises to bring light, and sometimes heat, to the great emergency of our age.

The Heat and the Fury - Peter Schwartzstein
#39;A landmark work on perhaps the essential question of our time #39; - David Wallace-Wells, author of The Uninhabitable Earth In this ground-breaking book, environmental journalist, Peter Schwartzstein, takes the reader on the first on-the-ground exploration of climate change #39;s contribution to global conflict. From the ravaged villages of Iraq, where ISIS has used drought as a recruiting tool and weapon of terror, to the pirate-ridden waters of Bangladesh - and drawing on more than a decade of reporting from dozens of countries - Schwartzstein writes about the unexpected ways in which climate change is feeding global unrest and conflict. Through the stories of the soldiers, farmers, spies and others affected around the world, he makes sense of a form of conflict that remains poorly understood, even as it devastates the lives of so many millions of people. While researching this book, Schwartzstein was chased by kidnappers, detained by police and told, in no uncertain terms, that he was no longer welcome in certain countries. Yet, as he recounts, these personal brushes with violence are simply a hint of the conflict simmering in our warming world. As Schwartztein #39;s unparalleled reporting shows, there #39;s nothing inevitable about climate violence. In fact, as he sets out, the same stresses that are pitching people against one another can even help bring them back together.

The Invisible Man and The Food of the Gods - Herbert George Wells
With an Introduction and Notes by Linda Dryden, Professor of English Literature at Edinburgh Napier University and the author of Joseph Conrad and H. G. Wells: The Fin-de Siecle-Literary Scene. At the end of the nineteenth century a stranger arrives in the Sussex countryside and mayhem ensues; in the sleepy county of Kent a miracle food brings biological chaos that engulfs and threatens the entire planet. H. G. Wells s fertile and mercurial imagination never brought us more bizarre and unsettling stories than those revealed in The Invisible Man (1897) and The Food of the Gods, and How It Came to Earth (1904). These are stories of extraordinary physical transformations and are at once extremely funny and richly imaginative. At the same time, Wells poses some very probing questions about the ethical dimensions to science and the human capacity for both pity and cruelty. Brought together for the first time in this new Wordsworth edition, The Invisible Man and The Food of the Gods are two of Wells s most entertaining and thought-provoking works.

The Red Record - Ida B. Wells-Barnett
The Red Record tabulates these instances of cruelty in clear, impartial figures. Ida B. Wells original goal for the brochure was to humiliate and shock the lethargic public-and spur change-alongside the total by describing actual instances of lynching and listing the common justifications for these arbitrary executions. The practice of lynching was so pervasive in the postbellum American South that the majority of Southern politicians and leaders chose to ignore it. This lethal brand of vigilante justice was really a thinly veiled racist justification for homicidal brutality. With charges ranging from attempted stock poisoning to insulting whites, more than 200 African Americans were killed in 1892 alone. In order to let the dreadful statistics speak for themselves. The anti-lynching movement in the US was led by investigative journalist and activist Ida B. Wells, later Wells-Barnett. A Red Record used mainstream white newspapers to document a resurgence of white mob violence, building on her ground-breaking exposé Southern Horrors: Lynch Law in All Its Phases (1892), and discovered that more than 9,000 African Americans had been killed by lynching in the South between 1864 and 1894. The novel aimed to make space for one aspect of a crucial discussion about power, violence, and race in the US.

Mirrors in the Earth - Asia Suler
An award-winning nature therapy session for the soul--encounter the benevolence of the living world through 12 essays on the Earth-healing powers of self-compassion and empathy. When healing is needed at the deepest level, nature will always call us back home--not only to the oak woods or water-filled coves, but to the homes within ourselves. In a series of 12 lyrical nature essays, herbalist, writer, and Earth intuitive Asia Suler illuminates the healing power of the living Earth--and gives us permission to nurture self-compassion and empathy as forces for personal and ecological healing. In a time of unprecedented ecological devastation, it’s easy to feel hopeless and disconnected. It’s easier still to mask our inherent goodness--to imagine that our unique and precious gifts simply aren’t enough, or forget the power of our inborn empathy. For those of us who are highly sensitive, innately attuned to the workings and whispers of the natural world, it can be hard to embody the belief that we’re enough as we are--and that can heal the Earth. Here, Suler reveals the opposite: our goodness, our empathy, our intuitive connections, and our capacity for self-compassion are more than personal traits or antidotes to despair: they are, in fact, our most potent vehicles for planetary transformation. And as we learn to more deeply nurture and accept ourselves, we unlock living, healing connections to Earth.Combining poetic nature writing with exercises and reflection prompts at the end of each essay, Mirrors in the Earth coaxes us to come as we are: to discover and tend the inherent brilliance and medicine that lives in each of us. From the manatee-calm springs of wild Florida to the flower-dotted coves of the world’s most biodiverse mountains, Mirrors in the Earth is an invitation and encounter with the benevolence of the living world--and a nature therapy session for the soul.

Liu s writing takes the reader to the edge of the universe and the end of time, to meet stranger fates than we could have ever imagined. With a melancholic and keen understanding of human nature, Liu s stories show humanity s attempts to reason, navigate and, above all, survive in a desolate cosmos. Cixin s trilogy is SF in the grand style, a galaxy-spanning, ideas-rich narrative of invasion and war GUARDIAN. Wildly imaginative, really interesting... The scope of it was immense BARACK OBAMA, 44th President of the United States.

Behind the Lens: My Life - David Suchet
In the early days of my career, I didn t think I stood a hope in hell. Look at me: I m short, stocky, slightly overweight, deep of voice, passionate, dark haired, olive skinned, hardly your typical Englishman. What chance did I have, going into the world of British theatre?David Suchet has been a stalwart of British stage and screen for fifty years. From Shakespeare to Oscar Wilde, Freud to Poirot, Edward Teller to Doctor Who, Harold Pinter to Terence Rattigan, Questions of Faith to Decline and Fall, right up to 2019 s The Price, David has done it all. Throughout this spectacular career, David has never been without a camera, enabling him to vividly document his life in photographs. Seamlessly combining photo and memoir, Behind the Lens is the story of David s remarkable life, showcasing his wonderfully evocative photographs and accompanied by his insightful and engaging commentary. In Behind the Lens, David discusses his London upbringing and love of the city, his Jewish roots and how they have influenced his career, the importance of his faith, how he really feels about fame, his love of photography and music, and his processes as an actor. He looks back on his fifty-year career, including reflections on how the industry has changed, his personal highs and lows, and how he wants to be remembered. And, of course, life after Poirot and why he s still grieving for the eccentric Belgian detective. An autobiography with a difference, this is David Suchet as you ve never seen him before - from behind the lens. The book offers more insight into the mind and philosophy of this remarkable man than a more conventional biographical approach could have achieved Country Life

The Synchronicity Key - David Wilcock
In The Synchronicity Key, David Wilcock goes beyond this new understanding to investigate how our universe works. Using history and astrology, as well as new research into fractals, spiritual geometry and quantum physics, Wilcock demonstrates that there is a hidden architecture within time which guides individuals and nations through a system of enlightenment (which Joseph Campbell called the Hero s Journey). Historical events occur in shockingly precise and repeating cycles of time and once the hidden laws governing our fate through seemingly random synchronicity are identified we are left with a remarkable blueprint of how to lead our lives in an uncertain world.David Wilcock s understanding of the living fabric that binds the universe together is behind his knowledge of synchronicity, the connections between seemingly unrelated events, and how we are guided by it. Synchronicity is a means to awaken us to our true identity, the thoughts we think and the actions we take are being guided by hidden cycles that repeat throughout the universe and time. David Wilcock is our guide to this new world.

Of The Night - Blair David
Selected and Edited with an Introduction and Notes by David Blair, University of Kent at Canterbury.Late in the eighteenth century authors began to write â ˜Gothicâ ™ stories as a way of putting literature back in touch with the irrational, the supernatural and the bizarre, which had been neglected in the â ˜Age of Reasonâ ™.This superb new collection brings together stories from the earliest decades of Gothic writing with later 19th and early 20th century tales from the period in which Gothic diversified into the familiar forms of the ghost- and-horror-story. Work by writers such as Poe, Dickens, Hawthorne, Gaskell and M. R. James appears alongside that of anonymous writers from the start of the period and many lesser-known authors from Britain and America. Some of these stories, like the haunting â ˜The Lame Priestâ ™ are â ˜lost masterpiecesâ ™ and several have never been anthologised before. Together they cover the spectrum of Gothic story-telling â “ tales of madness and violence, of shape-shifters and spectres, that express some of the deepest fears of the human mind â “ insanity, sexuality, death and the often terrible power of the past to catch up with the present. In a lively, authoritative introduction David Blair provides fresh insights and a detailed commentary on the storiesâ ™ place in the complex traditions of Gothic writing in British and American literature.

The Thinking Heart - David Grossman
*Winner of the Heinrich Heine Prize for Literature*A hundred and fifty years of conflict. What does that do to a personâ ™s soul, to the spirit of a nation? To both the occupied and the occupier?International Booker Prize-winning Israeli novelist David Grossman has spent decades campaigning for peace in Israel and Palestine. But after October 7th 2023, a day marking the biggest loss of Jewish life in this century, he retreated inwards to ask himself difficult and necessary questions about his beloved nation:How could this massacre have happened? How could the Netanyahu government, tangled in its web of scandals, fail to protect its citizens? And did October 7 and the war that followed take with it their last hope of a two-state solution? In eleven essays David Grossman traces the years leading up to that day and the ensuing war through a string of failures by a morally bankrupt party clinging to power. He documents the struggle being fought on both sides between those committed to conflict, and the many who simply want to live in peace. Ultimately, Grossman arrives at the most important question of all: Will there ever be a lasting peace in the region?

The Wright Brothers - David McCullough
The incredible true story of the origin of human flight, by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author David McCullough. On a winter day in 1903, in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, two unknown brothers from Ohio changed history. But it would take the world some time to believe what had happened: the age of flight had begun, with the first heavier-than-air, powered machine carrying a pilot.Who were these men and how was it that they achieved what they did? David McCullough, two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, tells the surprising, profoundly human story of Wilbur and Orville Wright. Far more than a couple of unschooled Dayton bicycle mechanics who happened to hit on success, they were men of exceptional courage and determination, and of far-ranging intellectual interests and ceaseless curiosity, much of which they attributed to their upbringing. In this thrilling book, McCullough draws on the immense riches of the Wright Papers, including private diaries, notebooks, scrapbooks and more than a thousand letters from private family correspondence to tell the human side of the Wright Brothers #39; story, including the little-known contributions of their sister, Katharine, without whom things might well have gone differently for them.
