Není to žádný literární testament, v němž by autor odkazoval potomstvu moudrosti a rady k následování, ani bilance, v níž by účetnicky sčítal zisky a ztráty života, o němž ostatně ví, že jej - i když mu kukačka opakovaně slibuje léta - už může počítat spíš na měsíce. Tato kniha je hlavně výpovědí o prožívané přítomnosti - o závěrečné fázi života, v níž člověk, navzdory všem deficitům staroby, stále ještě plně prožívá vše kolem sebe, ba uvědomuje si a vnímá i věci drobné a nenápadné zvlášť ostře právě proto, že se mu u nich neodbytně vnucuje přídomek poslední . Tyto pozdní zážitky a úvahy se odvíjejí v desítkách krátkých textů prozaických i básnických, v nichž se střídají nejrůznější, často groteskně zcizené náměty a nápady osobní, literární i politické (včetně mámy Merkelové), které však při pozornějším čtení vytvářejí rafinovaně propojenou motivickou síť a celostnou kompozici. Přítomní literáti se o to alespoň pokusí. - Do tohoto historického obrazu se ovšem nenásilně, nenápadně, ale pro Grassovy současníky snadno rozpoznatelně prolíná lehce ironický obraz známé Skupiny 47, jež se poprvé sešla přesně o 300 let později, těsně po konci války, která byla pro Německo i Evropu ještě ničivější než ta třicetiletá. V tomto prolínání Grass znovu prokazuje svou virtuozní schopnost parodie a parafráze i čtenářsky přitažlivé humorně-vážné hry s fatálními událostmi dějin. Díky své nevyčerpatelné fabulační vynalézavosti, ale také díky mimořádně důkladné znalosti dobových reálií zde Günter Grass podal tak živý, plastický a při vší fantazijnosti tak věrohodný obraz barokní doby, pro jaký bychom v německé poválečné literatuře stěží hledali obdobu. Román sa končí v bani, kde umelec Amsel alias Brauchsel priemyselne vyrába vtáčie strašiaky stvorené na obraz človeka a vyváža ich do sveta, pričom demaskuje reálny svet ako podsvetie. Günter Grass (1927 Gdansk – 2015 Lübeck) bol popredný nemecký prozaik, básnik, dramatik a výtvarník. Je nositeľom Nobelovej ceny za literatúru. Vyučil sa za kamenára, vyštudoval grafiku a sochárstvo. V roku 1956 vydal prvú zvierku básní s vlastnými ilustráciami, v roku 1959 prvý román Plechový bubienok. Tvorí prvú časť Gdanskej trilógie, ktorá patrí k základným dielam nemeckej povojnovej literatúry. Jej druhou časťou je novela Mačka a myš a uzatvára ju román Psie roky. Autor opäť líči krajinu pri ústí Visly do Baltského mora, rozpráva o svojráznych Kašuboch, o ich dobrodružnej existencii síce v ústraní od veľkého sveta, ale uprostred dejín. Psie roky sa svojou rozmanitosťou a sugestívnosťou literárneho tvaru považujú za vrchol spisovateľovej tvorby. Tento názor zdieľajú aj spisovatelia John Irving a Salman Rushdie, ktorí patria k veľkým Grassovým obdivovateľom.

Tento cyranovský defekt se Mahlke snaží od dětství kompenzovat, nakonec způsobem, který jemu a všem jeho vrstevníkům nabízí, vtlouká do hlavy dobová ideologie: chce se stát válečným hrdinou. To se mu podaří. V zázračně rychlé kariéře je jako velitel tanku dekorován válečným křížem, jímž může konečně zakrýt onen fatální defekt na krku. Na tomto zdánlivém vrcholu však tragikomický hrdina dezertuje. Novela nevysvětluje proč, nemoralizuje, neideologizuje - pouze vypráví ve výmluvných zkratkách jeden paradigmatický případ celé svedené a zničené generace, která byla současně spolupachatelem i obětí zrůdného režimu. Právě pro svůj groteskní humor, z něhož chvílemi mrazí, a pro svou novelistickou hutnost, která ponechává postavám i dějům jejich mnohoznačnost a tajemství, se stala Kočka a myš jedním z nejčtenějších textů Güntera Grasse.

V naivně radikálních postojích gymnazistů podává Grass - jako jeden z prvních levicových intelektuálů (román vyšel v roce 1969) - ironickou, pozoruhodně vyváženou analýzu mentality a ideologií, z jejichž energie v roce 1968 explodovalo radikální studentské hnutí : přitaká jeho pohnutkám i cílům, ale jasně se distancuje od jeho prostředků, které namnoze vyústily v zaslepený terorismus.
