Vydala takmer sedemdesiat literárnych diel, z toho vyše dvadsať románov, niekoľko zväzkov poviedok, knižných esejí, autobiografických prác, cestopisov, písala však aj poéziu a divadelné hry. Debutovala novelou s východoindickou témou Oeroeg (1948), krátko nato sa preslávila románom o poslednom stredovekom trubadúrovi Karolovi Orleánskom Les očakávania (1949) a prózou z prostredia talianskej renesancie Šarlátové mesto (1952). K najvýznamnejším dielam autorkinho neskoršieho obdobia patrí historická próza Páni čajových plantáží (1992, po česky 2003) a román Oko kľúča (2002). Za svoju tvorbu získala Hella S. Haasse niekoľko najvyšších domácich literárnych ocenení, jej knihy sú preložené do mnohých jazykov.
