The Short Second Life Of Bree Tanner - Stephenie Meyer
I turned off my brain. It was time to hunt. I took a deep breath, drawing in the scent of the blood inside the humans below. They weren''t the only humans around, but they were the closest. Who you were going to hunt was the kind of decision you had to make before you scented your prey. It was too late now to choose anything.Bree Tanner can barely remember life before she had uncannily powerful sense, superhuman reflexes and unstoppable physical strength. Life before she had a relentless thirst for blood. . .life before she became a vampire. All Bree knows is that living with her fellow newborns has few certainties and even fewer rules: watch you back, don''t draw attention to yourself and, above all, make it home by sunrise or die. What she doesn''t know: her time as an immortal is quickly running out. Then Bree finds an unexpected friend in Diego, a newborn just as curious as Bree about their mysterious creator, whom they know only as her. As they come to realize that the newborns are pawns in a game larger than anything they could''ve imagined, Bree and Diego must choose sides and decided whom to trust. But when everything you know about vampires is based on a lie, how do you find the truth? In an irresistible combination of danger, mystery and romance, Stephenie Meyer tells the devastating story of the newborn army as they prepare to close in on Bella Swan in the Cullens, following their encounter to its unforgettable conclusion.

The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman - Laurence Sterne
''L-d! said my mother, what is all this story about? - A COCK and a BULL, said Yorick - And one of the best of its kind, I ever heard''Laurence Sterne''s great masterpiece of bawdy humour and rich satire defies any attempt to categorize it, with a rich metafictional narrative that might classify it as the first ''postmodern'' novel. Part novel, part digression, its gloriously disordered narrative interweaves the birth and life of the unfortunate ''hero'' Tristram Shandy, the eccentric philosophy of his father Walter, the amours and military obsessions of Uncle Toby, and a host of other characters, including Dr Slop, Corporal Trim and the parson Yorick. A joyful celebration of the endless possibilities of the art of fiction, Tristram Shandy is also a wry demonstration of its limitations. The text and notes of this volume are based on the acclaimed Florida Edition, with a critical introduction by Melvyn New and Christopher Ricks''s introductory essay from the first Penguin Classics edition.''The book that I would never tire of ... Sterne was about 250 years ahead of his time''Roy Porter, author of Enlightenment: Britain And The Creation Of The Modern World

The Death and Life of Great American Cities - Jacobs Jane
In this classic text, Jane Jacobs set out to produce an attack on current city planning and rebuilding and to introduce new principles by which these should be governed. The result is one of the most stimulating books on cities ever written. Throughout the post-war period, planners temperamentally unsympathetic to cities have been let loose on our urban environment. Inspired by the ideals of the Garden City or Le Corbusier''s Radiant City, they have dreamt up ambitious projects based on self-contained neighbourhoods, super-blocks, rigid ''scientific'' plans and endless acres of grass. Yet they seldom stop to look at what actually works on the ground. The real vitality of cities, argues Jacobs, lies in their diversity, architectural variety, teeming street life and human scale. It is only when we appreciate such fundamental realities that we can hope to create cities that are safe, interesting and economically viable, as well as places that people want to live in.''Perhaps the most influential single work in the history of town planning... Jacobs has a powerful sense of narrative, a lively wit, a talent for surprise and the ability to touch the emotions as well as the mind'' New York Times Book Review

The Long, Long Life of Trees - Fiona Stafford
A lyrical tribute to the diversity of trees, their physical beauty, their special characteristics and uses, and their ever-evolving meanings Since the beginnings of history trees have served humankind in countless useful ways, but our relationship with trees has many dimensions beyond mere practicality. Trees are so entwined with human experience that diverse species have inspired their own stories, myths, songs, poems, paintings, and spiritual meanings. Some have achieved status as religious, cultural, or national symbols.  In this beautifully illustrated volume Fiona Stafford offers intimate, detailed explorations of seventeen common trees, from ash and apple to pine, oak, cypress, and willow. The author also pays homage to particular trees, such as the fabled Ankerwyke Yew, under which Henry VIII courted Anne Boleyn, and the spectacular cherry trees of Washington, D.C. Stafford discusses practical uses of wood past and present, tree diseases and environmental threats, and trees’ potential contributions toward slowing global climate change. Brimming with unusual topics and intriguing facts, this book celebrates trees and their long, long lives as our inspiring and beloved natural companions.

The Unknown Father of the Modern Mission - Francoise Fauconnet-Buzelin
The unknown father of the modern MissionPierre Lambert de la Motte was born in Normandy in 1624 into a pious noble family. After studying law, and a brief but distinguished career in civil administration, he entered the Congregation of the Assumption, a lay association. In 1657, he volunteered as a missionary in Asia, was appointed Titular Bishop of Beirut and left for Asia in 1660. Arrived in Siam, he made pastoral visits in Cochinchina (Southern Vietnam) and throughout Vietnam, educating and ordaining native priests, giving courage to dispersed communities, trying to settle the many rivalries between missionary orders and to improve tense relations with the authorities, while living the deep spiritual life of a mystic of the Cross. He died in 1679.His work is part of the considerable development of missions in the seventeenth century under the leadership of Pope Gregory XV. In France, Pierre Lambert de la Motte played a key role in the birth of the Paris Foreign Missions Society in 1658, for China and South-East Asia. They were to work tirelessly, following the Roman Instructions of 1659: refusal of secularization and politicization, respect for indigenous cultures, accession of the local Churches to autonomy and consolidation of their link with the Holy See.The author describes the work accomplished by the Paris Foreign Missions Society in this part of Asia, shows the difficulties in developing them, as well as the extraordinary tenacity of an inspired man.

Secrets of the Gnomes - Wil Huygen
The charming sequel to the runaway classic GnomesIn this republication of the charming sequel to Gnomes, Rien Poortvliet and Wil Huygen collaborate once again to recount their long, arduous journey through the forest at the request of the gnomes. The 200 hand-illustrated pages overflow with the authors’ on-the-scene sketches and firsthand observations. Poortvliet and Huygen are invited as more than mere observers though. After a meal of mushrooms and cream (which tastes as if it were made of “everything that light, air, sun, moon, and earth could produce”), they find that they have been turned into gnomes themselves! The authors take a penetrating look at their subjects: they learn of the tender emotional life of a gnome; they see and diagram the mechanics of ingenious gnome technology; they observe how gnomes administer justice in the wild; they are told how fairy tales first began (Little Red Riding Hood was actually a gnome!); and, best of all, they are allowed to see parts of the gnomes’ fabled Secret Book. Endowed with gnome characteristics such as exceptional vision and heightened senses of touch, smell, taste, and hearing—and decked in peaked gnome caps—Poortvliet and Huygen are led from Lapland across the Siberian wilderness by Nicolas, the gruff but kindly guide who teaches them the secrets of survival in the icy north. The three travel across varied modes of transportation—in a troika pulled by lemmings, on a fox’s back, and on the head of a moose. They are even carried by the abominable snowman! Lovers of gnomes will celebrate the arrival of this new volume and delight in the opportunity to know these elusive creatures better. Scores of enchanting illustrations by Poortvliet record the comings and goings of gnomes and the loving interaction with nature for which they are so famous.

The Politics of Fear - Ruth Wodak
Far-right populist politics have arrived in the mainstream. We are now witnessing the shameless normalization of a political discourse built around nationalism, xenophobia, racism, sexism, antisemitism and Islamophobia. But what does this change mean? What caused it? And how does far-right populist discourse work? The Politics of Fear traces the trajectory of far-right politics from the margins of the political landscape to its very centre. It explores the social and historical mechanisms at play, and expertly ties these to the "micro-politics" of far-right language and discourse. From speeches to cartoons to social media posts, Ruth Wodak systematically analyzes the texts and images used by these groups, laying bare the strategies, rhetoric and half-truths the far-right employ. The revised second edition of this best-selling book includes: A range of vignettes analyzing specific instances of far-right discourse in detail. Expanded discussion of the "normalization" of far-right discourse. A new chapter exploring the challenges to liberal democracy. An updated glossary of far-right parties and movements. More discussion of the impact of social media on the rise of the far-right. Critical, analytical and impassioned, The Politics of Fear is essential reading for anyone looking to understand how far-right and populist politics have moved into the mainstream, and what we can do about it. Â

People should know that their stories count, no matter how personal, how emotional, how eccentric, how trivial, how stupid or how self-centred they may appear. Just make them, and make them your own, in spite of hostility, of negativity, of the threat of punishment: go to it. Language is with the user and you are the user. Anne of Ingleside
Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery is the author of the children's book ''Anne of Ingleside''. Toronto's McClelland and Stewart and the Frederick A. Stokes Company released it for the first time in July 1939. (New York). It is also Montgomery's last book to be published. Anne Shirley appears in 10 of these volumes. In terms of publication order, Anne of Ingleside came before Rainbow Valley. The Anne stories are also included in the short story collection of The Blythes Are Quoted, which was written in 1941/42 but wasn't released until 2009. The book's copyright in the US was extended in 1967. Anne travels to Avonlea to see Diana Wright and Anne Cordelia. She returns to the old Morgan house, now named 'Ingleside'. The book spans a period of about six years and includes adventures for each of Anne's five children as well as their aunt Mary Maria Blythe. In many of the stories, the Ingleside children are taken in by children who tell lies to seem more interesting. Gilbert has become distant from Anne, and she fears that he may no longer love her. Shirley, the third son of the Blythes, appears in the book but strangely does not receive a solo "spotlight" story of his own.

The White Peril - Omo Moses
From the son of legendary civil rights organizer Robert P. Moses: a brilliant, unflinching memoir about becoming Black in America that interweaves voices from 3 generations of the Moses family"Omo Moses has written an epic reaffirmation of Black diasporic life and a clarion call for justice. The White Peril is destined to be read and cherished.” —Junot DÃaz, Pulitzer Prize for Fiction recipient and author of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar WaoIn The White Peril, Omo Moses deftly interweaves his own life story with excerpts from both his great-grandfather''s sermons and the writings of his father, the civil rights activist Bob Moses. The result is a powerful chorus of voices that spans 3 generations of an African American family, all shining a light on the Black experience, all calling fiercely for racial justice.Omo was born in 1972 in Tanzania, where his parents had fled to escape targeted harassment by the US government. He did not encounter white supremacy until the family moved back to America when he was 4. Here, he learned what it meant to be Black. He came of age in a Black enclave of Cambridge, Massachusetts, became a passionate basketball player, lived in the shadow of his fatherÂ’s Civil Rights work but did not feel like a part of it until his college basketball career came to an unceremonious end. Unsure what to do next, he took up his fatherÂ’s offer to go with him to Mississippi and teach math to Algebra Project students. Omo didnÂ’t know it yet, but it was among those young people that he would find his purpose. This book is at once a coming-of-age story, a multigenerational family memoir, an epic father-son road trip, a searing account of the Black male experience, and a work that powerfully revives Rev. MosesÂ’s demand for liberation.

The Viceroy's Daughters - Anne de Courcy
The lives of the three daughters of Lord Curzon: glamorous, rich, independent and wilful.Irene (born 1896), Cynthia (b.1898) and Alexandria (b.1904) were the three daughters of Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India 1898-1905 and probably the grandest and most self-confident imperial servant Britain ever possessed. After the death of his fabulously rich American wife in 1906, Curzon''s determination to control every aspect of his daughters'' lives, including the money that was rightfully theirs, led them one by one into revolt against their father. The three sisters were at the very heart of the fast and glittering world of the Twenties and Thirties.Irene, intensely musical and a passionate foxhunter, had love affairs in the glamorous Melton Mowbray hunting set. Cynthia (''Cimmie'') married Oswald Mosley, joining him first in the Labour Party, where she became a popular MP herself, before following him into fascism. Alexandra (''Baba''), the youngest and most beautiful, married the Prince of Wales''s best friend Fruity Metcalfe. On Cimmie''s early death in 1933 Baba flung herself into a long and passionate affair with Mosley and a liaison with Mussolini''s ambassador to London, Count Dino Grandi, while enjoying the romantic devotion of the Foreign Secretary, Lord Halifax. The sisters see British fascism from behind the scenes, and the arrival of Wallis Simpson and the early married life of the Windsors. The war finds them based at ''the Dorch'' (the Dorchester Hotel) doing good works. At the end of their extraordinary lives, Irene and Baba have become, rather improbably, pillars of the establishment, Irene being made one of the very first Life Peers in 1958 for her work with youth clubs.

As summer drifted into autumn, however, he found himself so entranced by the landscape's rhythms and beauty that he could not bear to leave.Settled in his isolated house facing the North Atlantic, Beston spent a year immersed in the raw, elemental life of the great beach around him. Observing the migrations of seabirds, savage winter storms and the constantly shifting interactions between sea and shore, he wrote of the passing seasons in ecstatic, riveting detail.A highly influential classic of American nature writing, The Outermost House is a vital precursor to today's masters of the genre. Impassioned and richly layered, it is a matchless evocation of the spirit of a place and the enduring appeal of the wild.Part of the Pushkin Press Classics series: timeless storytelling by icons of literature, hand-picked from around the globe.Introduced by Philip Hoare.Henry Beston (1888-1968) was born in Quincy, Massachusetts and educated at Harvard. Power and the Palace - Low Valentine
When Sir Keir Starmer visited Donald Trump in the White House and produced a letter from King Charles inviting the president for a second state visit, it was a gesture that spoke volumes about the continuing importance of the monarchy for Britain''s international relations. It was also a vivid illustration of the relationship between Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street.Power and the Palace lifts the lid on the mysterious power dynamic at the heart of the British state: the secretive and little understood relationship between the monarchy and the government. In vivid, page-turning prose, Valentine Low examines the extraordinary political life of Queen Victoria, who exerted her will in a way that no monarch has done since, the effect that had on her son Edward VII, and the turbulent and fascinating political times of George V. We are taken behind the scenes of the wartime meetings between George VI and Winston Churchill (the origin of the weekly audience) and discover how Elizabeth II played a crucial role in modernising - and saving - the monarchy. At the heart of the book are the famous meetings between sovereign and prime minister. Low shows how, from Victoria and Benjamin Disraeli to Elizabeth II and Margaret Thatcher, personal chemistry proved just as important as the constitutional relationship.Based on nearly 100 interviews with senior politicians, top civil servants, royal aides and constitutional experts, Power and the Palace rewrites our understanding of the political power of the monarchy.

Mao: The Unknown Story - Jung Chang, Jon Halliday
The most authoritative life of Mao ever written, by the bestselling author of Wild Swans, Jung Chang and her husband, historian Jon Halliday.Based on a decade of research, and on interviews with many of Mao''s close circle in China who have never talked before, and with virtually everyone outside China who had significant dealings with him, this is the most authoritative life of Mao ever written. It is full of startling revelations, exploding the myth of the Long March, and showing a completely unknown Mao: he was not driven by idealism or ideology; his intimate and intricate relationship with Stalin went back to the 1920s, ultimately bringing him to power; he welcomed Japanese occupation of much of China; and he schemed, poisoned and blackmailed to get his way. After Mao conquered China in 1949, his secret goal was to dominate the world. In chasing this dream he caused the deaths of 38 million people in the greatest famine in history. In all, well over 70 million Chinese perished under Mao''s rule, in peacetime. Combining meticulous history with the story-telling style of Wild Swans, this biography makes immediate Mao''s roller-coaster life, as he intrigued and fought every step of the way to force through his unpopular decisions. Mao''s character and the enormity of his behaviour towards his wives, mistresses and children are unveiled for the first time. This is an entirely fresh look at Mao in both content and approach. It will astonish historians and the general reader alike. ‘This a bombshell of a book’, Chris Patten, The Times‘The first great political biography of the twenty-first century’ Spectator

The Testament and Other Poems: New Translation - Francois Villon
The most celebrated of French medieval poets, François Villon makes poetry out the basest material the raw urban life of Paris with its petty officials, students, clergy, tradesmen, pimps, whores and thieves. Despite successful studies, the young Villon immersed himself in this world, embarking on a career of petty crime that brought him repeated imprisonment. Condemned to death, but then reprieved and banished from Paris, he disappears from history in 1463, leaving behind a legend of poète maudit that has never lost its fascination.Violent, indignant, ribald and often brutally physical, Villon s verse has a formidable satiric thrust, and yet it also encompasses passages of poignant nostalgia and haunting lyric expression, culminating in his digressive autobiographical masterpiece, The Testament, which counts among the most popular texts of French poetry.
