Podobně jako v některých svých dalších prózách, i zde P. K. Dick nepředvádí své prapodivné vize a neuvěřitelné mezilidské vztahy, ale dotýká se jejich prostřednictvím toho, co je nám všem až příliš dobře známé: prapodivných lidských charakterů a odpudivých pohnutek k tomu nejhanebnějšímu, čeho je člověk schopen.
