The Lost Words
The Lost Words by composer James Burton takes its inspiration and text from the award-winning ‘cultural phenomenon’ and book of the same name by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris: a book that was, in turn, a creative response to the removal of everyday nature words like acorn, newt and otter from a new edition of a widely used children’s dictionary. Both the book and Burton’s 32-minute work, which is written in 12 short movements for upper-voice choir in up to 3 voice parts (with either orchestral or piano accompaniment), celebrates each lost word with a beautiful poem or ‘spell’, magically brought to life in Burton’s music. At its heart, the work delivers a powerful message about the need to close the gap between childhood and the natural world. Burton’s piece was co-commissioned by the Hallé Concerts Society for the Hallé Children’s Choir and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The piano accompaniment version was premiered at the Tanglewood Festival in 2019 by the Boston Symphony Children’s Choir, of which Burton is founder and director. The Hallé Children’s Choir will premiere the orchestral version of the full work in Manchester, UK, post-pandemic.Vocal ScoreCo-commission by Boston Symphony and Hallé Concerts Society for their respective Children’s ... Thirty-Two Words for Field - Manchan Magan
Rediscover the lost words of an ancient land in this new and updated edition of an international bestseller. Most people associate Britain and Ireland with the English language, a vast, sprawling linguistic tree with roots in Latin, French, and German, and branches spanning the world, from Australia and India to North America. But the inhabitants of these islands originally spoke another tongue. Look closely enough and English contains traces of the Celtic soil from which it sprung, found in words like bog, loch, cairn and crag. Today, this heritage can be found nowhere more powerfully than in modern-day Gaelic. In Thirty-Two Words for Field Manchán Magan explores the enchantment, sublime beauty and sheer oddness of a 3000-year-old lexicon. Imbuing the natural world with meaning and magic, it evokes a time-honoured way of life, from its 32 separate words for a field, to terms like loisideach (a place with a lot of kneading troughs), bróis (whiskey for a horseman at a wedding), and iarmhaireacht (the loneliness you feel when you are the only person awake at cockcrow).Told through stories collected from Magan's own life and travels, Thirty-Two Words for Field is an enthralling celebration of Irish words, and a testament to the indelible relationship ... FINDING THE WAYFARER - Emma Rose Barber
Shortlisted for the East Anglian Book Awards 2025. "Emma Rose Barber leads us on an elegant, intimate and always illuminating walk through the history, theology and poetry of wayfaring." Rhidian Brook, author of The Aftermath & The Killing of Butterfly Joe. In the vein of Robert Macfarlane's The Old Ways, a literary, artistic and spiritual journey through past and present. Throughout history, the figure of the wayfarer, and the notion of wayfaring, has seized the imagination. Through a series of walks, the author follows in the path of the medieval wayfarer to see how this captivating figure developed from being seen as an indigent nuisance, much maligned, to romantic muse for artists and writers. The book brings the wayfarer to life. And all up-to-date to see how it is found in contemporary culture. Finding the Wayfarer is a captivating exploration of the age-old tradition of wayfaring - the simple, often solitary journey on foot. Through a blend of historical enquiry, evocative place writing and memoir, the book weaves together the stories of wayfarers across time. From the marginalized figures in medieval manuscripts, to the introspective writings of Charlotte Smith, Wordsworth and Hardy, the wayfarer has often been viewed with suspicion ... Is a River Alive? is a joyful, mind-expanding exploration of an ancient, urgent idea: that rivers are living beings who should be recognized as such in imagination and law.Macfarlane takes readers on three unforgettable journeys teeming with extraordinary people, stories, and places: to the miraculous cloud-forests and mountain streams of Ecuador, to the wounded creeks and lagoons of India, and to the spectacular wild rivers of Canada―imperiled respectively by mining, pollution, and dams. Braiding these journeys is the life story of the fragile chalk stream a mile from Macfarlane’s house, a stream who flows through his own years and days.Powered by dazzling prose and lit throughout by other minds and voices, Is a River Alive? will open hearts, challenge perspectives, and remind us that our fate flows with that of rivers―and always has.

Holloway - Robert Macfarlane, Dan Richards
Holloway - a hollow way, a sunken path. A route that centuries of foot-fall, hoof-hit, wheel-roll and rain-run have harrowed deep down into bedrock. In July 2005, Robert Macfarlane and Roger Deakin - author of Wildwood - travelled to explore the holloways of South Dorset''s sandstone. They found their way into a landscape of shadows, spectres & great strangeness. Six years later, after Roger Deakin''s early death, Robert Macfarlane returned to the holloway with the artist Stanley Donwood and writer Dan Richards. The book is about those journeys and that landscape. Moving in the spaces between social history, psychogeography and travel writing, Holloway is a beautiful and haunted work of art.

Sophie, Countess of Shillings, has been living a quiet life on her property in Australia, until love and loyalty draw her back to England where she once trained to become one of Miss Lily's 'Lovely Ladies'. Now, in 1942, Shillings Hall trains women to become espionage agents. Sophie's mission? To seek out disaffected German officers prepared to kill Hitler. Across Europe women like Sophie, or Parisian couturier Violette, or Hannelore, German Prinzessin and spy, must determine where their deepest loyalty lies. And as Europe slowly disintegrates, Miss Lily must also decide her final fate. Based on real-life events, this is the story of the women who wielded immense, yet secret, power. Podzemí - Václav Cílek, Robert Macfarlane
Podzemí je velkolepá průzkumná cesta do říše podsvětí, jak se objevuje v mýtech, literatuře, paměti i samotné zemi. V dlouho očekávané knize nám Robert Macfarlane nabízí mimořádný pohled na náš vztah k temnotě, pohřbívání a minulosti i budoucnosti naší planety.
