Oceňovaný román o umění, lásce a pandemii napříč časem i prostorem. Jeho seriálovou adaptaci připravuje kanál HBO Max. „Mistrovsky vypointovaný, hluboce dojemný vizionářský román se skládá sám do sebe jako zrcadlová síň, aby prozkoumal, co nás spojuje. A kolik neobyčejných náhod nás vytrvale přivádí k jednomu každému dni, v němž je nám dopřáno prostě žít." – Esquire. „Autorka upozorňuje, že klidovým stavem lidstva je krize. (...) Zprostředkovává nám závratný pocit reality přesahující rámec jediné existence a působí oslavně, dojemně, ba nadpřirozeně." – The Guardian. „Výmluvná ukázka autorčina talentu, jenž je schopen čerpat z celé řady tónů i epoch.“ – The Washington Post. „Ještě odvážnější než Stanice 11. Vzrušující, aktuální a ve výsledku naprosto uspokojující čtení.“ – Kirkus Reviews.

Moře klidu - Emily St. John Mandelová

Román o umění, lásce a pandemii napříč časem i prostorem.

Román byl deníkem The New York Times zařazen mezi nejočekávanější knihy roku 2020. Jeho seriálovou adaptaci připravuje společnost HBO Max. „Je to román psychologicky přesvědčivý, jenž věrně zachycuje lidské ambice, sny, strachy a úzkosti. A nahlédneme-li na něj optikou literární historie, skvěle líčí, co dnes (...) zbylo ze země neomezených příležitostí.“ – Hana Ulmanová, Aktuálně.cz „Celým románem prostupuje pomíjivost… Když do sebe jednotlivé kousky začnou zapadat, je to vzrušující…“ - Associated Press.

The Bandini Quartet - John Fante

Possessing a style of deceptive simplicity, emotional immediacy and tremendous psychological point, among the novels, short stories and screenplays that complete his career, Fante''s crowning accomplishment is the Arturo Bandini tetralogy. This quartet of novels tell of Fante''s fictional alter-ego Bandini, an impoverished young Italian-American escaping his suffocating home in Colorado for Depression-era Los Angeles. In the beginning, it is the triple weights of poverty, father and Church that Bandini struggles under but though the physical escape is complete, the psychological imprint continues as he comes to terms with love, desire and the knowledge his talent may not be recognised.

LOST: Back to the Island - Emily St. James, Noel Murray

A comprehensive critical companion to the blockbuster TV show LOST, revisiting its core themes, lore, and impact on culture For fans of one of the most successful and highly discussed shows in recent memory, LOST: Back to the Island is both a delightful time capsule and a rousing work of entertainment criticism. Before it premiered in the fall of 2004, LOST looked doomed to be an expensive, disastrous plane crash of a TV show. Instead, LOST was a massive hit, debuting with the biggest audience for a new drama on ABC in over a decade, reaching heights of over 23 million viewers at its peak, and holding on to a hefty fan-base for its entire six-season run. The elements that made the series seem like a boondoggle proved, instead, to be a big part of its appeal. Audiences loved the exotic island setting, became invested in the morally compromised characters, and feverishly tried to unravel the show’s many mysteries. In LOST: Back to the Island, TV critics and veteran LOST recappers Emily St. James and Noel Murray revisit what made the show such a success and an object of enduring cultural obsession, twenty years later. Through essays, episode summaries, and cultural analysis, they take us back to the island and examine LOST’s lasting impact—and its complicated, sometimes controversial legacy—with a clear-eyed and lively investigation.

The Wit and Charm of Emily in Paris - Mathilde Pineau - Valencienne

Since its release in 2020 Emily in Paris has received some criticism from journalists and Parisians for being ridiculously unrealistic...nevertheless, its global popularity has established it as a flagship Netflix show, which narrates most entertainingly the fairytale of Emily Cooper, a Millenial/Gen Z American in Paris, played by Lily Collins. One could say that Emily has the size and charm of Audrey Hepburn and the irreverent style of the girl from Chicago. The Emily in Paris series is a visual feast that unveils all the Parisian codes: must-see iconic sites, trendy “m’as-tu vu?” spots, haute couture and snobbery, and, of course, exquisite food! Aerial views, night shots of the City of Light, rooftops and café terraces place Paris as the central character along with Emily of course. Thanks to Paris, Emily’s life is about to bloom. She’ll take her Parisian sexual awakening and career development into her very own American hands! In this book, you will find the best quotes from the first three series, and the wit and charm will stylishly inspire you and make you smile. This is the perfect gift for any fans of the hit Netflix series!

Lord John and the Hand of Devils - Diana Gabaldon

A keepsake collection of Lord John Grey''s shorter adventures and a spectacular addition to any Gabaldon fan''s library, Lord John and the Hand of the Devils brings these three unique novellas together for the first time.____________Lord John and the Hellfire Club marks the first appearance of Lord John outside the Outlander novels (and chronologically precedes the novel Lord John and the Private Matter). A young diplomat is killed in the street as he begs Lord John for help. Witnessing the murder, Grey vows to avenge the young man, as the trail leads to the notorious Hellfire Club and the dark caves beneath Medmenham AbbeyIn Lord John and the Succubus, Grey''s assignment as liaison to a Hanoverian regiment in Germany finds him caught between two threats: the advancing French and Austrian army, and the menace of a mysterious ''night-hag,'' who spreads fear and death among the troops. Acknowledging that he is unlikely to fall victim to a succubus, Lord John is obliged to contend with the marauding night-hag before the enemy arrives. This tale with a touch of the supernatural bridges the action between Gabaldon''s two full-length Lord John tales. Finally, in Lord John and the Haunted Soldier, Lord John is called to the Arsenal at Woolwich to answer a Royal Commission of Enquiry''s questions regarding a cannon that exploded during the battle of Krefeld (a central action in Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade). Accusations ensue, and Lord John finds himself knee-deep in a morass of gunpowder, treason, and plot -- haunted by a dead lieutenant, and followed by a man with no face.____________Readers love Lord John and the Hand of Devils . . .***** ''John Grey is my spirit animal. The Church of Living Dangerously - John Lee Bishop

The unbelievable true story of John Bishop, a former megachurch pastor who ended up running drugs for the Sinaloa Cartel. For thirty years, John Bishop was a pastor. Along the way, he learned that everyone does stupid things. We lie to our families. We lie to ourselves. We take long lunch breaks and sneak cigarettes when we said we’d quit. Sometimes, we take a sabbatical from our nice, comfortable life as a pastor and start running drugs for the Sinaloa Cartel, then get caught and spend five years in federal prison.Okay, that last one might just apply to John. But it does make for one hell of a story. In The Church of Living Dangerously, John tells that story in full for the first time—and you don’t know the half of it. Along the way, he brings readers along for the harrowing ride from the rough small town in Washington where he was born all the way to the dirty villages in Mexico where he fell in with some of the most dangerous criminals on the planet. There are backyard fight clubs where John learned to take a punch, the abandoned K-Mart where he used to preach every Sunday (sometimes with the help of wild animals), and the drug dens where he almost lost his life ten times over. It’s a story that seems too wild to be true. But it is true—and John has the scars, both literal and figurative, to prove it.Ride along with John as he gets arrested at the U.S.-Mexico border and learn the story of his life in all its rough, stupid glory of guns, drugs, tigers, bare-knuckle boxing matches, and prison riots. John has learned a lot of important lessons about hardship and redemption and family, and what it means to live dangerously—and to experience another chance at life.

The Prophecies of Merlin - John Matthews, Maarten Haverkamp

Reveals forgotten Arthurian lore hidden in the prophetic language of a medieval text• Includes the story of Merlin’s birth as the son of a demon, how he was born already able to speak, how his magic ensured he was not killed by his babysitter, and details of his affair with the Lady of the Lake• Shares stories of Percival’s first contact with the Grail and King Arthur’s connection with the legendary mystical king Prester John• Includes early Welsh prophecies attributed to Merlin, prophecies compiled by historian Geoffrey of Monmouth, and the letter of Prester John that inspired ColumbusMaarten Haverkamp acquired a French book from 1498 titled The Prophecies of Merlin that claimed to be prophecies given by the legendary magician. The book was really a compilation of documents collected by an unknown 13th century monk. Working with John Matthews, Maarten spent five years translating the mysteries hidden in this obscure book.Presenting their translation and commentary, the authors share forgotten stories of early Arthurian literature and magic. They share the tale of Merlin’s birth from a demon, how he was born able to speak, and how his magic ensured he was not killed by his guardian. Merlin’s affair with the Lady of the Lake is detailed, ending with his imprisonment in a tomb. Other stories include Percival’s first contact with the Grail and King Arthur’s connection with the mystical king Prester John. The authors show how The Prophecies of Merlin sheds new light on the world of King Arthur and the women who learned magic from Merlin. To reveal the esoteric meaning of this work, the authors include Welsh prophecies attributed to Merlin (translated by John and Caitlín Matthews), other prophecies attributed to Merlin that were compiled by Geoffrey of Monmouth, and the original letter of Prester John that inspired the Polo family and Columbus to search for India.Discovering a hitherto lost or forgotten book about Merlin and King Arthur is a rare event these days. Yet here the authors present a virtually forgotten and, to date, untranslated book, which includes much that is new—and exciting—about the legendary king and his magical adviser. Through their translation and insightful passage by passage commentary, they reveal secrets long hidden behind the obscure language of the prophetic utterances.

The Bird Singers - Jean Boucault, Johnny Rasse

“A mesmerizing tale like no other.”—Priyanka Kumar, author of Conversations with Birds“A beautiful book. The writing about birds—their songs and sounds, what birds mean to us, the wonder and joy they evoke in us—is among the most original, insightful, and enjoyable I’ve read.”—James Macdonald Lockhart, author of Wild Air: In Search of BirdsongThis captivating memoir takes readers into the eccentric world of competitive bird-calling—following the coming-of-age story of two boys who found their voice in the natural world. This captivating book brings together two birds of a feather: Jean and Johnny, boys from very different worlds growing up in a small village in France. Jean is the genteel pharmacist’s son, dressed in his Sunday best; Johnny’s father is a rough, working-class sheep herder, always with the odor of animals clinging to him. Each year, over three hundred bird species visit their village, which intersects a major migratory flyway. The two boys’ stories converge when Jean enters a bird-calling contest. He places second, and at only eleven years old becomes a child celebrity on the bird-calling circuit. Then Johnny starts to compete as well. At the annual bird festival, both boys are standouts, and a long, admiring rivalry develops between them, eventually culminating in the European championships. As they evolve as performers, the two boys’ identities become more distinct: Jean is soft-spoken, while Johnny likes to play to the crowd. While most of their competitors are adult men, hunters who learned to call birds for sport, the two boys are fascinated with the pure beauty of birdsong, and in trying to transcend themselves through imitating birds. Their shared passion develops into an enduring partnership as performers, and they go on to tour the world in concert as the Bird Singers. This is a story as much about friendship as it is about birdsong. The setting is timeless and bucolic, with long walks to small village schools, games of pick-up soccer, and father-son birding trips. The chapters, which bounce back and forth between the two narrators, are woven through with descriptions of colorful characters in the bird-calling competition circuit and the kind of ornithological detail that can only come from a true passion for birds. There is poetry in the description of the different birds, from common seagulls to thrushes and bluethroats and nightingales, and something like communion in the way Jean and Johnny understand the feathered friends they imitate.Unique, evocative, and cinematic, The Bird Singers is the story of an unlikely friendship, sparked by a desire to speak with the avian world.

''Trust me, this is a great true story'' - Ken Follett ''It deserves to be ranked among the great survival stories of the Second World War'' - The Jewish Chronicle ~~~~~ The captivating true story of one boy''s flight across Europe to escape the Nazis. A tale of extraordinary courage, incredible adventure, and the relentless pursuit of life in the face of impossible challenges. In early 1940 Chaim Herszman was locked in to the Lódz Ghetto in Poland. Hungry, fearless and determined, he goes on scavenging missions outside the wire limits, until he is forced to kill a Nazi guard. Chaim avoids grenade and rifle fire on the Russian border, shelters with a German family in Berlin, falls in love in occupied France, is captured on a mountain pass in Spain, gets interrogated as a potential Nazi spy in Britain, and eventually fights for everything he believes in as part of the British Army. He protects his life by posing as an Aryan boy with a crucifix around his neck, and fights for his life through terrible and astonishing circumstances. The Life and Death of St. Kilda - Tom Steel

The extraordinary story of the UK’s most gruelling and spectacularly beautiful islands. Tom Steel’s acclaimed portrait of the St Kildan’s lives is now updated in this reissued edition.Situated at the westernmost point of the United Kingdom, the spectacularly beautiful but utterly bleak island of St Kilda is familiar to virtually nobody. A lonely archipelago off the coast of Scotland, it is hard to believe that for over two thousand years, men and women lived here, cut off from the rest of the world. With a population never exceeding two hundred in its history, the St Kildans were fiercely self-sufficient. An intensely religious people, they climbed cliffs from childhood and caught birds for food. Their sense of community was unparalleled and isolation enveloped their day-to-day existence. With the onset of the First World War, things changed. For the very first time in St Kilda’s history, daily communication was established between the islanders and the mainland. Slowly but surely, this marked the beginning of the end of St Kilda and in August 1930, the island’s remaining 36 inhabitants were evacuated.Newly updated to include the historic appointment of St Kilda as the United Kingdom’s only UNESCO Dual Heritage site, the ongoing search for information about the island and the threats that it continues to face, this is the moving story of a vanished community and how twentieth century civilization ultimately brought an entire way of life to its knees.

The Sunflower - Nicholas Kotar, John Maximovitch

May our love for the Sun, the will of God, be as strong as the sunflower?s, so that even in days of hardship and sorrow we will continue to sail unerringly along the sea of life, following the directions of the barometer and compass of God?s will that leads us to the safe haven of eternity.??St John of Tobolsk? This is a thoroughly practical manual of the spiritual life that focuses on the central goal of every Christian: discerning the will of God and struggling to mold our life to it, just as Christ ?humbled Himself and became obedient? (Philippians 2:8). Saint John addresses fundamental questions: Why should we care about God?s will? What are the benefits in following His will? How do we avoid common obstacles to living in accordance with His will? The reader will find practical and eternal wisdom running through these writings that discuss the perennial questions of why a good God permits evil. This is the first English edition of St John?s text, edited and abbreviated for the contemporary reader. St John Maximovitch (1651-1715) was Metropolitan of Tobolsk and all Siberia. He served as a missionary in Siberia and was known for his unpretentiousness and his generosity to the poor. His veneration among the people grew after his repose and he was glorified by the Russian Church in 1916, becoming the last canonized saint of the pre-revolutionary period. He is best known today as the namesake and ancestor of the great 20th-century saint of the Russian diaspora, St John of Shanghai and San Francisco.

The Threshold - Nicholas Kotar, St Ignatius Brianchaninov

Death is a great sacrament. It is the birth of a person from this earthly, temporary life, into eternity. In this third volume of St Ignatius’s collected works, published here in English for the first time, the saint examines the mystical boundaries that govern the life of a Christian: the one, between life and death; and the other, between the visible, physical realm and the invisible to most, but no less real, spiritual realm. Included in this volume is St Ignatius’s “Homily on Death,” one of his most popular works in his native Russia and often published separately. The reader will also encounter St Ignatius’s teachings on the nature of the soul and the essence of the incorporeal beings, the latter theologoumena being a point of contention between the author and his contemporary, St Theophan the Recluse. The text is complemented by a comprehensive scripture index and a short biography of the author.

The History of St. Matthew´s Church in Prague-Dejvice - Vojtěch Pokorný

The current publication by author Vojtěch Pokorný takes as its subject not only the history of the oldest Christian sacred building in the Prague neighbourhood of Dejvice, but equally the past of the locality itself, starting from its first known settlement in late Neolithic times up to the present. Using a wide range of literature and sources, the author presents a truthful account of the oft-mythicised tales of the earliest traces of human presence in Upper Šárka and the founding of the church consecrated to St. Matthew, and in chronological succession relates the events transpiring there across the following centuries. Research into archival materials and other sources provided the basis for an imposing text that casts light on a history now nearly forgotten. The author unfolds previously neglected topics and opens the curtain for new awareness of our ancestors against the large-scale history of the Czech lands. Though undoubtedly a scholarly text, the book is nonetheless conceived as readable even for the wider public. Among other findings, the reader learns of the origins and gradual expansion of the famous St. Matthew's Fair - until only the recent past, associated with St. Matthew's Church itself. No less intriguing themes addressed are the church's famous gingerbread Nativity scene, or the depictions of the church by various artists. The text was reviewed by four professional historians, each addressing the relevant epoch of scholarly expertise - prehistory, medieval times, the Baroque era, and modernity. The publication is illustrated with a wealth of archival and contemporary photographs, historic engravings and maps, all capturing and enlivening the sacred structure and site that is its central theme Kniha autora Vojtěcha Pokorného pojednává nejen o dějinách nejstarší křesťanské svatyně v pražských Dejvicích, ale i o minulosti lokality samotné, počínaje prvním osídlením v pozdní době kamenné až po současnost. Autor uvádí pomocí bohatého poznámkového aparátu na pravou míru mýty o nejstarších stopách lidské činnosti na Horní Šárce a o vzniku kostelíka sv. Matěje a navazuje v chronologickém sledu líčením zdejších událostí v následujících staletích.Výzkum dobových archiválií a dalších pramenů dal vzniknout monolitnímu textu, který osvětluje dnes již téměř zapomenutou historii. Autor předkládá doposud nezpracované téma a otevírá nová poznání o našich předcích na pozadí velkých dějin českých zemí.

The Complete Poems - Emily Brontëová

The poems of Emily Jane Bronte are passionate and powerful works that convey the vitality of the human spirit and of the natural world. Only twenty-one of her poems were published during her lifetime - this volume contains those and all others attributed to her. Many poems describe the mythic country of Gondal and its citizens that she imagined with Anne, and remain the only surviving record of their joint creation. Other visionary works, including 'Remembrance' and 'No coward soul is mine', boldly confront mortality and anticipate life after death. And poems such as 'Redbreast early in the morning' and 'The blue bell is the sweetest flower' evoke the wild beauties of nature she observed on the Yorkshire moors, while also examining the state of her psyche.

The Grampian Quartet - Nan Shepherd

The Quarry Wood, although published well before Sunset Song, inhabits a similar world; the progress of its heroine could almost be the alternative story of a Chris Guthrie who did go to university. Compassionate and humorous, the grace and style of Shepherd''s prose is heightened by a superb ear for the vigorous language of the north-east.The Weatherhouse, Shepherd''s masterpiece, is an even more substantial achievement which belongs to the great line of Scottish fiction dealing with the complex interactions of small communities, and especially the community of women - a touching and hilarious network of mothers, daughters, spinsters and widows. It is also a striking meditation on the nature of truth, the power of human longing and the mystery of being. The third and final novel, A Pass in the Grampians, describes Jenny Kilgour''s coming of age as she has to choose between the kindly harshness of her grandfather''s life on a remote hill farm, and the vulgar and glorious energy of Bella Cassie, a local girl who left the community to pursue success as a singer, and has now returned to scandalise them all.The Living Mountain is a lyrical testament in praise of the Cairngorms. It is a work deeply rooted in Shepherd''s knowledge of the natural world, and a poetic and philosophical meditation on our longing for high and holy places. This omnibus edition of Shepherd''s prose works reveals how her sensitivity and powers of observation raise her work far above the status of regional literature and into the front rank of Scottish writing.
