A Delayed Life: The true story of the Librarian of Auschwitz - Dita Krausová

The powerful, heart-breaking memoir of Dita Kraus, the real-life Librarian of AuschwitzBorn in Prague to a Jewish family in 1929, Dita Kraus has lived through the most turbulent decades of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Here, Dita writes with startling clarity on the horrors and joys of a life delayed by the Holocaust. From her earliest memories and childhood friendships in Prague before the war, to the Nazi-occupation that saw her and her family sent to the Jewish ghetto at Terezin, to the unimaginable fear and bravery of her imprisonment in Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen, and life after liberation.Dita writes unflinchingly about the harsh conditions of the camps and her role as librarian of the precious books that her fellow prisoners managed to smuggle past the guards. But she also looks beyond the Holocaust - to the life she rebuilt after the war: her marriage to fellow survivor Otto B Kraus, a new life in Israel and the happiness and heartbreaks of motherhood.Part of Dita's story was told in fictional form in the Sunday Times bestseller The Librarian of Auschwitz by Antonio Iturbe. Her memoir tells the full story in her own words.

Posledné kníhkupectvo v Londýne - Madeline Martinová

Nadčasový príbeh o strate, láske a sile literatúry. A už vôbec si nepredstavovala, že jej nezostane iná možnosť, než začať pracovať u nevrlého starého pána Evansa v ponurom a zaprášenom kníhkupectve v srdci Londýna. Najmä, keď sa v knihách vôbec nevyzná a sama nikdy nemala čas na čítanie. Jedného dňa však do kníhkupectva vstúpi šarmantný letecký dôstojník George, vďaka ktorému Grace v sebe postupne objaví lásku ku klasickým románom a začne z nich čerpať toľko potrebnú nádej.

The Spy who was left out in the Cold - Tim Tate

Spring 1958: a mysterious individual believed to be high up in the Polish secret service began passing Soviet secrets to the West. His name was Michal Goleniewski and he remains one of the most important, yet least known and most misunderstood spies of the Cold War. Even his death is shrouded in mystery and he has been written out of the history of Cold War espionage - until now. Tim Tate draws on a wealth of previously-unpublished primary source documents to tell the dramatic true story of the best spy the west ever lost - of how Goleniewski exposed hundreds of KGB agents operating undercover in the West; from George Blake and the ''Portland Spy Ring'', to a senior Swedish Air Force and NATO officer and a traitor inside the Israeli government. The information he produced devastated intelligence services on both sides of the Iron Curtain.Bringing together love and loyalty, courage and treachery, betrayal, greed and, ultimately, insanity, here is the extraordinary true story of one of the most significant but little known spies of the Cold War.Acclaim for The Spy Who Was Left Out in the Cold: ''Totally gripping . . . a masterpiece. Tate lifts the lid on one of the most important and complex spies of the Cold War, who passed secrets to the West and finally unmasked traitor George Blake.'' HELEN FRY, author of MI9: A History of the Secret Service for Escape and Evasion in World War Two''A wonderful and at times mind-boggling account of a bizarre and almost forgotten spy - right up to the time when he''s living undercover in Queens, New York and claiming to be the last of the Romanoffs.''SIMON KUPER, author of The Happy Traitor''A highly readable and thoroughly researched account of one of the Cold War''s most intriguing and tragic spy stories.'' Even the origins of the woman described as ‘the most beautiful spy’ remain hazy, as does her ultimate fate. David Tremain delves into the archives, and in doing so begins to reveal glimpses of her fascinating life story: her career as a dancer in Paris; a tumultuous and violent dalliance with a White Russian officer of uncertain identity; her time in England with the Duchesse de Château-Thierry, an Abwehr agent; the suspicious and untimely death of her husband, and a rumoured pregnancy. Iosi, the Remorseful Spy - Horacio Lutzky, Miriam Lewin

Jose Perez, a young intelligence agent of the Federal Police, receives orders from his bosses to infiltrate the Argentine Jewish community by posing as a Jew. The goal is to monitor the development of an alleged Jewish plan to take over Patagonia to create a second state of Israel, known as the ''Andinia Plan.'' Iosi, the Hebrew name he chooses, blends in by learning the language, culture, history, religion, and politics of the Jewish people: he becomes a well-respected community leader and obtains valuable information that he passes on to his handler, the enigmatic and seductive Laura, or Red as she is called. Iosi soon understands that there is nothing suspicious going on within the Argentine Jewish community. Prone to amorous adventures, he lets himself go and falls madly in love with a young Hebrew teacher, marries her in secret and plans to convert and emigrate with her to Israel. When the two most catastrophic terrorist attacks in Argentinian history take place, one against the Israeli embassy in 1992 and the other against Asociacion Mutual Israelita Argentina (AMIA), a Jewish Community Centre in 1994, causing hundreds of deaths, Iosi grows fearful that the information he provided was used by his bosses to help organize the attacks. His bosses order him to abandon his mission and move away from Buenos Aires. But Iosi feels driven to get to the bottom of the story and he seeks out two Jewish journalists, Horacio and Miriam. Together, they strive for years to get Iosi''s story told. But after initial interest, every contact they make, from supposedly honest politicians to national and international Jewish organizations, ultimately turn their backs on them. Some people are killed, others lose their jobs or are removed from the case. There is no end. This is a true story and it continues unresolved to this day.

The Ultra Spy - Frederick William Winterbotham CBE

Few people had a career that spanned two world wars and which involved some of the most dramatic and dangerous moments of the 20th century. Group Captain Frederick Winterbotham CBE, however, was one of them. Following the outbreak of war in the summer of 1914, a young Frederick, then still just 17 years old and only freshly back from a trip around the world, enlisted in the ranks of the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars Yeomanry. Soon, though, Winterbotham’s thoughts turned in a new direction – and a transfer to the Royal Flying Corps followed. Having gained his pilot’s ‘Wings’, Winterbotham was posted to 29 Squadron, then on the Western Front in France, in April 1917. Early in 1930, Winterbotham rejoined the Air Staff with the official duties of a liaison officer; unofficially he was to operate an Air Department in Britain’s Secret Service. It was in this role that, in the 1930s, he made a number of visits to Germany where he undertook a valuable intelligence and high-level espionage role among many of the top Nazis – meetings that he reveals here in dramatic detail. These encounters included Hitler himself. During the war Winterbotham was based at Bletchley Park and reported directly to the head of MI6, Sir Hugh Sinclair, as well as his successor, Sir Stewart Menzies. He was subsequently appointed as the organisation’s deputy and tasked with safeguarding the distribution and use of top secret intelligence throughout the Allied forces, which included the Enigma and Ultra transcripts. So important was this work, that Winterbotham would often report information they contained directly, and personally, to Winston Churchill. Winterbotham remained an unsung war hero, because the cracking of Enigma was considered so secret it was not revealed for some thirty years after the war, when he published his best-selling book The Ultra Secret. This autobiography is the story of one man’s remarkable service to his nation through two world wars.

Alive - Edward Ashton, Madeline Schwartzman

A timely examination of a wide range of projects exploring the boundaries of what it means to be alive, speculating on what 'life' is, and how humankind will (or will not) fit into a new order of hybrid species: a sort of sci-fi guidebook to lab-built humans. A silicone jellyfish with a rat’s heart, a drone that smells using the antenna of a moth, wearables made from cultured human skin, an AI-populated digital snack bar in the metaverse. These projects and many more offer a mind-bending, head-turning vision of the future that Madeline Schwartzman demonstrates is just around the corner.Curated from new developments in synthetic biology, artificial intelligence, robotics, engineering, biology and art, this broad-ranging survey demonstrates the myriad ways in which our perception of what it means to be alive has dramatically changed. Where do we draw the new lines? Are there any boundaries we should not cross? And what if… ? By examining these new ‘beings’, Alive maps out a vision of new partnerships, uncanny hybrids and collaborative intelligences, as science fiction rapidly becomes science fact.

In the Garden of the Righteous - Richard Hurowitz

“In the Garden of the Righteous brilliantly describes how in the midst of the brutality of the Holocaust and the collaboration, acquiescence and passivity of millions, there were people who risked their lives to save others out of a sense of shared humanity. This book is more timely than ever.”—Stuart E. Eizenstat, author of Imperfect Justice: Looted Assets, Slave Labor, and the Unfinished Business of World War IIThese powerfully illuminating and inspiring profiles pay tribute to the incredible deeds of the Righteous Among the Nations, little-known heroes who saved countless lives during the Holocaust.Less than a century ago, the Second World War took the lives of more than fifty million people; more than six million of them were systematically exterminated through crimes of such enormity that a new name to describe the horror was coined: the Holocaust. Yet amid such darkness, there were glimmers of light—courageous individuals who risked everything to save those hunted by the Nazis. Today, as bigotry and intolerance and the threats of fascism and authoritarianism are ascendent once again, these heroes’ little-known stories—among the most remarkable in human history—resonate powerfully. Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem, has recognized more than 27,000 individuals as “Righteous Among the Nations”—non-Jewish people such as Raoul Wallenberg and Oskar Schindler who risked their lives to save their persecuted neighbors. In the Garden of the Righteous chronicles extraordinary acts at a time when the moral choices were stark, the threat immense, and the passive apathy of millions predominated. Deeply researched and astonishingly moving, it focuses on ten remarkable stories, including that of the circus ringmaster Adolf Althoff and his wife Maria, the Portuguese diplomat Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the Italian cycling champion Gino Bartali, the Polish social worker Irena Sendler, and the Japanese spy Chinue Sugihara, who provided hiding places, participated in underground networks, refused to betray their neighbors, and secured safe passage. They repeatedly defied authorities and risked their lives, their livelihoods, and their families to save the helpless and the persecuted. In the Garden of the Righteous is a testament to their kindness and courage.

Last Night at the Hollywood Canteen: A Novel - Sarah James

"Glamorous and suspenseful." -Marie Benedict, New York Times bestselling author of The Only Woman in the Room and The Mitford AffairPerhaps the best place in 1943 Hollywood to see the stars is the Hollywood Canteen, a club for servicemen staffed exclusively by those in show business. Murder mystery playwright Annie Laurence, new in town after a devastating breakup, definitely hopes to rub elbows with the right stars. Maybe then she can get her movie made. But Hollywood proves to be more than tinsel and glamour. When despised film critic Fiona Farris is found dead in the Canteen kitchen, Annie realizes any one of the Canteen's luminous volunteers could be guilty of the crime. To catch the killer, Annie falls in with Fiona's friends, a bitter and cynical group-each as uniquely unhappy in their life and career as Annie is in hers-that call themselves the Ambassador's Club.Solving a murder in real life, it turns out, is a lot harder than writing one for the stage. And by involving herself in the secrets and lies of the Ambassador's Club, Annie just might have put a target on her own back. "This vibrant, utterly delightful mystery expertly captures the drama, glamour and absurdity of wartime Hollywood.Sarah James's swift dialogue, dry wit and clever characters transport you into a 1940s movie, where the jokes are quick, the love affairs scandalous and the cast as charming as they are flawed. Underneath it all, James's deep knowledge of the era's movies and music lends an authenticity that makes the rest shine even brighter. I laughed, I gasped and I never wanted it to end. This should head straight to the top of every must-read list." -Brianna Labuskes, author of The Librarian of Burned Books

The Secret Agent's Pocket Manual - Dr Stephen Bull

A remarkable insight into the training and techniques of Allied agents operating behind enemy lines during the Second World War.Most wars have had some element of espionage and subterfuge, but few have included as much as the Second World War, where the all-embracing nature of the conflict, new technology, and the battle of ideologies conspired to make almost everywhere a war zone. The occupation of much of Europe in particular left huge areas that could be exploited. Partisans, spies and saboteurs risked everything in a limbo where the normal rules of war were usually suspended. Concealment of oneself, one''s weapons and equipment, was vital, and so were the new methods and hardware which were constantly evolving in a bid to stay ahead of the Gestapo and security services. Silent killing, disguise, covert communications and the arts of guerrilla warfare were all advanced as the war progressed. With the embodiment and expansion of organisations such as the British SOE and the American OSS, and the supply of special forces units which operated behind enemy lines, clandestine warfare became a permanent part of the modern military and political scene. Perhaps surprisingly many of these hitherto secret techniques and pieces of equipment were put into print at the time and many examples are now becoming available. This manual brings together a selection of these dark arts and extraordinary objects and techniques in their original form, under one cover to build up an authentic picture of the Allied spy.
