The Lesser Histories - Jan Zábrana

From the eighth floor of a tower block in Central Europe, Jan Zábrana surveyed the twentieth century. He had been exiled from his own life by Communism. His parents were imprisoned, their health broken, and he was not allowed to study languages in college. Refusing both to rebel outright or to cave in, he thought of himself as a dead man walking. "To all those who keep asking me to do things for them, I sometimes feel like saying: ‘But I'm dead. I died long ago. Why do you keep treating me as if I were one of the living?'” Yet during some of Europe's most difficult years, he wrote The Lesser Histories, a collection of sixty-four sonnets that range through themes of age, sex, and political repression-a radiant testament to his times. The lines are emptied both of personal pathos and political stridency. Often Zábrana's own voice segues into those of poets he had translated over the years, leaving only a bare shimmer of subjectivity-humorous, oblique, pained-with which to view his own works and days. The poems document a splendid and bitter isolation, and are immersed in the humor, hatreds, and loves of the everyday. Published in Czech in the ill-fated year of 1968, they subsequently fell into neglect. After the fall of Communism in 1989, Zábrana's collected poems and selected diaries were published in Czech, and he was acclaimed as a major twentieth-century writer. Now, with this collection, he can begin to reach English-language readers for the first time.

Jan Zábrana: básník, překladatel, čtenář - Petr Eliáš, Eva Kalivodová

Jan Zábrana patřil k nejvýraznějším českým spisovatelům a překladatelům druhé poloviny 20. století. Výstup z tohoto odborného setkání představuje stejnojmenná kolektivní monografie pod zkušeným edičním vedením Evy Kalivodové a Petra Eliáše, prezentující rozmanitost životní, překladatelské i literárně tvůrčí cesty Jana Zábrany. Esejistické i analytické stati řady přispěvatelů zvučných jmen doplňují vzpomínkové bloky Zábranových redakčních spolupracovníků, vstupy strážkyně básníkova odkazu Marie Zábranové a také ukázky prací nadějných Zábranových oborových pokračovatelů. Texty provázejí archivní dokumentární fotografie a reprodukce unikátních písemností osobního i pracovního charakteru.

Povídky - Jan Zábrana

Soubor třinácti povídek představuje básníka, prozaika, esejistu a překladatele Jana Zábranu (1931-1984) jako mimořádného autora povídek, průkopníka užívání hovorového jazyka a slangu v české próze a významného prozaika let padesátých, kdy povídky vznikly.

Kniha představuje unikátní vhled do tvůrčí dílny básníka, prozaika, esejisty, překladatele a editora. Vychází doplněna ediční poznámkou Jana Šulce.

Básně a povídky - Jan Zábrana

Přítomný svazek reprezentuje Jana Zábranu v roli svébytného básníka a prozaika. Trojici stěžejních básnických sbírek Utkvělé černé ikony (1965), Stránky z deníku (1968) a Samosoud (1968 pod názvem Lynč), v nichž Zábrana surově sugestivním výrazem vystihl pocity nejistoty a marnosti v poúnorové době, rozšiřuje nedokončený soubor "samomluv" Zeď vzpomínek z let 1969-1971, upravený podle rukopisu nalezeného v pozůstalosti a úsečně shrnující básníkova intimní, tvůrčí i politická traumata. Do prozaické části svazku bylo soustředěno všech třináct známých Zábranových povídek z padesátých let: osm autorem zredigovaných a pět nedokončených, vydávaných na základě rukopisů nalezených v letech 1992 a 2007. Prvky autobiografičnosti, útržkovitost, všednost a skepse, dokumentárně zachycené prostředí městské periferie, snaha o nestylizovaný záznam vyslechnutých rozhovorů či improvizovaný proud vlastních myšlenek sbližují Zábranovy "svědecké" prózy s díly Bohumila Hrabala, Jiřího Koláře, Josefa Škvoreckého či Josefa Jedličky.

Jde o velmi rozsáhlé básnické dílo, obsahující vedle mnoha jednotlivých básní i tři ucelené básnické sbírky (Lyrický deník, Nápěvy a Únor 1954. Cyklus) a představující Jana Zábranu jednak jako výjimečného lyrika, jednak jako autora kolářovsky etických básní společenských, reagujících na tragický společensko-politický vývoj u nás na přelomu 40. a 50. let. Kniha je doplněna zevrubnou ediční poznámkou Jana Šulce.

After the success of Pastimes and Pleasures in the Time of Jane Austen, Sarah Jane Downing turns her attention to the hair and beauty styles of Jane Austen’s era. In Beauty and Cosmetics in the Time of Jane Austen, she examines the beauty ideals of the Regency period to shed light on the transition from the baroque high hair and formal doll-like faces of the court of King George III to the fresh complexions and glossy, bouncy ringlets of the Regency. 'Let The Light In', a song Jane wrote over twenty years ago during another dark time, points the way to finding a new kind of joy out of sorrow. It's a philosophy Jane has always lived by and, in this deeply personal book exploring the same themes, she reveals the lessons she's learned that have helped her grow, adapt and rise up through adversity. She looks back with candour and honesty on her experiences of heartbreak and loss, failure and burn-out. Cherishing the ring of support around her, taking the odd duvet day and keeping a sense of humour throughout, she grew stronger through each challenge, building resilience, trusting her gut, going for her goals. Read on and let Jane McDonald’s fabulous light into your own life.

Lady Susan, the Watsons, Sanditon - Jane Austenová

Collecting three lesser-known works by one of the nineteenth century''s greatest authors, Jane Austen''s Lady Susan, The Watsons and Sanditon is edited with an introduction by Margaret Drabble in Penguin Classics. These three short works show Austen experimenting with a variety of different literary styles, from melodrama to satire, and exploring a range of social classes and settings. The early epistolary novel Lady Susan depicts an unscrupulous coquette, toying with the affections of several men. In contrast, The Watsons is a delightful fragment, whose spirited heroine Emma Watson finds her marriage opportunities limited by poverty and pride. Written in the last months of Austen''s life, the uncompleted novel Sanditon, set in a newly established seaside resort, offers a glorious cast of hypochondriacs and speculators, and shows an author contemplating a the great social upheavals of the Industrial Revolution with a mixture of scepticism and amusement.Margaret Drabble''s introduction examines these three works in the context of Jane Austen''s major novels and her life, and discusses the social background of her fiction. This edition features a new chronology.Jane Austen (1775-1817) was extremely modest about her own genius but has become one of English literature''s most famous women writers. Austen began writing at a young age, embarking on what is possibly her best-known work, Pride and Prejudice, at the age of 22. She was also the author of Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion, Northanger Abbey and Mansfield Park.If you enjoyed Lady Susan, The Watsons and Sanditon, you may like Charlotte Brontë''s Tales of Angria, also available in Penguin Classics.''In [Sanditon] she exploits her greatest gifts, her management of dialogue and her skill with monologue. The book feels open and modern ... as vigorous and inventive as her earlier work''Carol Shields

Fashion in the Time of Jane Austen - Sarah Jane Downing

The broader Regency period 1795-1820 stands alone as an incredible moment in fashion history unlike anything that went before or after. It was the most naked period since Ancient Greece and before the 1960s, and for the first time England became a fashion influence, especially for menswear, and became the toast of Paris. With the ancient regime deposed, court dress became secondary and the season by season flux of fashion as we know it came into being, aided and abetted by the proliferation of new ladies'' magazines. Such an age of revolution and innovation inspired a flood of fashions taking influence from everything including the newly discovered treasures of the ancient world, to radical new ideas like democracy. It was an era of contradiction immortalized by Jane Austen, who adeptly used the newfound diversity of fashion to enliven her characters, Wickham''s military splendor, Mr. Darcy''s understated elegance, and Miss Tilney''s romantic fixation with white muslin.

The White Hare - Jane Johnsonová

'A brilliant novel of love, loss, forgiveness, and healing wrapped in Cornwall start to finish.' Liz Fenwick 'This book does not hesitate to evoke a sense of wonder.' Robin Hobb In a valley steeped in legend lies an abandoned house where Edens may be lost, found and remade... The White Valley in the far west of Cornwall cuts deeply through bluebell woods down to the sea. The house above the beach has lain neglected since the war. It comes with a reputation, which is why Mila and her mother Magda acquire it so cheaply in the fateful summer of 1954. Magda plans to restore the house to its former glory: the venue for glittering parties, where the rich and celebrated gathered for bracing walks by day and sumptuous cocktails by night. Mila's ambitions, meanwhile, are much less grand; she dreams of creating a safe haven for herself, and a happy home for her little girl, Janey. The White Valley comes with a long, eventful history, laced with tall tales. Locals say that a white hare may be seen running through the woods there; to some she's an ill omen, to others a blessing. Feeling fragile and broken-hearted, Mila is in need of as many blessings as she can get. But will this place provide the fresh start she so desperately needs? Praise for Jane Johnson: 'This book does not hesitate to evoke a sense of wonder. It's a renewal of 'what if' and it does that better than I've seen it done in quite a while' Robin Hobb 'Sings of an earth alive with power' Jackie Morris 'A brilliant novel of love, loss, forgiveness, and healing... The Stories - Jane Gardam

''Pure delight'' The TimesThroughout her career, prize-winning novelist Jane Gardam has been writing glorious short stories, each one hallmarked with all the originality, poignancy, wry comedy and narrative brilliance of her longer fiction. Passion and longing, metamorphosis and enchantment are Gardam''s themes, and like a magician she plucks them from the quietest of corners: from Wimbledon gardens and cold churches, from London buses and industrial backstreets. A mother watching her children on the beach dreams of a long-lost lover, an abandoned army wife sees a ghost at a moorland gate, a translator adrift in Geneva is haunted by the unspeakable manifestation of her own fears, and a colonial servant wreaks a delicious revenge on her monstrous masters. Gardam''s cast is wide and wonderful, saints and mystics, trollops and curmudgeons, yearning mothers and lost children, beloved figures such as Old Filth and less familiar - but equally unforgettable - characters like Signor Settimo, the sad-eyed provincial photographer marooned in Shipley or Florrie Ironside, the ferocious matron he seduces. With a mischievous ear for dialogue, a glittering eye for detail and a capacious understanding of the vagaries of the human heart, Jane Gardam''s stories will captivate, sadden and delight.

The Master of the Třeboň Altarpiece - Jan Royt

The Master of the Třeboň Altarpiece was one of the most important Gothic artists of the international style art in the European context. Scholarly literature, both Czech and foreign, presents various ideas concerning ascribing particular pieces of art to this unknown figure, the date of their origin and their chronology, artistic ideological points of departure of his work and the reconstruction and origin of the "Třeboň altarpiece." Art historian Jan Royt's extensive scientific monograph on the Master of the Třeboň Altarpiece is an attempt to answer these questions. The introductory chapters outline the historical events and development of painting in Europe and in Bohemia in the last third of the 14th century, including the spiritual background of the time. The central part is devoted to the artistic and iconographic analysis of works of the Master of the Třeboň Altarpiece and works from his workshop and circle as well as importance in the formulation of the "beautiful style." The scholar focused also on the various hypothetical variants of the hypothetical reconstruction of the altarpiece (including drawings). The book closes with a detailed and critical overview of art historians' views of the work of this medieval artist. The appendix, including illustrations, summarizing the results of restoration survey of the panel paintings by the Master of the Třeboň Altarpiece, is the work of Adam Pokorný.

The War Artist - Jan Casey

''Poignant, warm, gut wrenching and hopeful, this book is just beautiful.'' - 5* reader review***‘Excuse me,’ the man interrupted her as if there was absolutely nothing she could say to comfort him. ‘I have to get on with my digging.’ Then he stabbed violently at her sketchbook with his finger. ‘Get it all down,’ he snarled. ‘Every single disgusting, pathetic detail. And shove it in their faces.’London, 1940Following a chance meeting with her former teacher, young painter Sybil Paige wins a coveted assignment from the War Artists'' Advisory Committee, and so begins her journey across the length and breadth of the country, sketching everything from airfields and assembly lines to farms and factories.Sometimes it’s milkmaids and poultry keepers, brave and hopeful; sometimes it’s the harrowed faces of those digging through the rubble to find their loved ones and livelihoods. But armed with her sketchbook, Sybil captures it all, determined to tell the stories of the thousands of women fighting their own battles on the home front. Above all, she wants the voices of her subjects to shine through. But amidst the scenes of despair and courage, the one picture Sybil cannot paint and yet cannot purge from her brain, no matter how hard she tries, is the image of a woman folded into a chair, the crumpled telegram about her missing husband clasped in her hand. Because a self-portrait, Sybil well knows, requires the artist to find her own voice. With each new commission, Sybil grows in confidence. But, like the many people she meets and sketches, she fears the future: will it bring hope or heartbreak?***Readers love THE WAR ARTIST''I read this over 2 days, unable to tear myself away.
