The Homeric Hymns - Homér

Composed for recitation at festivals, these 33 songs were written in honour of the gods and goddesses of the ancient Greek pantheon. They recount the key episodes in the lives of the gods, and dramatise the moments when they first appear before mortals. Together they offer the most vivid picture we have of the Greek view of the relationship between the divine and human worlds.

The Homeric Hymns

With fair-tressed Demeter, the sacred goddess, my song begins,With herself and her slim-ankled daughter, whom Aidoneus onceAbducted... Most people are familiar, at least by repute, with the two great epics of Homer, the Iliad and the Odyssey, but few are aware that other poems survive that were attributed to Homer in ancient times. The Homeric Hymns are now known to be the work of various poets working in the same tradition, probably during the seventh and sixth centuries BC. They honour the Greek gods, and recount some of the most attractive of the Greek myths. Four of them (Hymns 2-5) stand out by reason of their length and quality. The Hymn to Demeter tells what happened when Hades, lord of the dead, abducted Persephone, Demeter s daughter. The Hymn to Apollo describes Apollo s birth and the foundation of his Delphic oracle. In the Hymn to Hermes Apollo s cattle are stolen by a felonious infant - Hermes, god of thieves. In the Hymn to Aphrodite the goddess of love herself becomes infatuated with a mortal man, the Trojan prince Ankhises. The Iliad - Homér

A stunning Penguin clothbound edition of Homer s great epic, in E. V. Rieu s classic translation. The Iliad is the first and the greatest literary achievement of Greek civilization - an epic poem without rival in the literature of the world, and the cornerstone of Western culture. The story centres on the critical events in the last year of the Trojan War, which lead to Achilleus killing of Hektor and determine the fate of Troy. But Homer s theme is not simply war or heroism. With compassion and humanity, he presents a universal and tragic view of the world, of human life lived under the shadow of suffering and death, set against a vast and largely unpitying divine background.. Seven Greek cities claim the honour of being the birthplace of Homer (c. 8th-7th century BC), the poet to whom the composition of the Iliadand Odyssey are attributed. The Iliad is the oldest surviving work of Western literature, but the identity - or even the existence - of Homer himself is a complete mystery, with no reliable biographical information having survived.E. V. Rieu initiated Penguin Classics with Allen Lane and his famous translation of the Odyssey was the first book published in the series in 1947. The Iliad followed in 1950.

With an Introduction and Notes by Adam Roberts, Royal Holloway, University of London. Homer s great epic describes the many adventures of Odysseus, Greek warrior, as he strives over many years to return to his home island of Ithaca after the Trojan War. His colourful adventures, his endurance, his love for his wife and son have the same power to move and inspire readers today as they did in Archaic Greece, 2800 years ago. This poem has been translated many times over the years, but Chapman s sinewy, gorgeous rendering (1616) stands in a class of its own. Chapman believed himself inspired by the spirit of Homer himself, and matches the breadth and power of the original with a complex and stunning idiom of his own. John Keats expressed his admiration for the resulting work in the famous sonnet, On first looking into Chapman s Homer : Much have I travelled in the realms of gold... This new Wordsworth edition of Chapman s Homer contains accessible annotation, and a detailed introduction that places his masterpiece in the context of his own day, and discusses its influences on later poets.

They are delayed by Polyphemus the Cyclops, the Lotus-eaters, the Sirens, the sorceress Circe, and other strange creatures. His struggles and triumphs offer insights into human resilience and the quest for identity, themes that continue to resonate in today #39;s global narrative of migration, displacement, and cultural integration.

Sing, goddess, the anger of Peleusâ ™ son Achilleus / and its devastation. For sixty years, that s how Homer has begun the Iliad in English, in Richmond Lattimore s faithful translationâ ”the gold standard for generations of students and general readers. This long-awaited new edition of Lattimore s Iliad is designed to bring the book into the twenty-first centuryâ ”while leaving the poem as firmly rooted in ancient Greece as ever. Lattimore s elegant, fluent versesâ ”with their memorably phrased heroic epithets and remarkable fidelity to the Greekâ ”remain unchanged, but classicist Richard Martin has added a wealth of supplementary materials designed to aid new generations of readers. A new introduction sets the poem in the wider context of Greek life, warfare, society, and poetry, while line-by-line notes at the back of the volume offer explanations of unfamiliar terms, information about the Greek gods and heroes, and literary appreciation. A glossary and maps round out the book. The result is a volume that actively invites readers into Homer s poem, helping them to understand fully the worlds in which he and his heroes livedâ ”and thus enabling them to marvel, as so many have for centuries, at Hektor and Ajax, Paris and Helen, and the devastating rage of Achilleus.

Setting aside the streamlining, modernizing approach of many recent translations, Mendelsohn artfully reproduces the epic’s formal qualities – meter, enjambment, alliteration, assonance – and in so doing restores to Homer’s masterwork its archaic grandeur. His expansive six-beat line, far closer to the original than that of other recent translations, allows him to capture each of Homer’s verses line for line, without sacrificing the amplitude and shadings of the original. The result is the richest, most precise, and most musical Odyssey in English, one that fully conveys its oral poetics while bringing to vivid life the gripping adventure, profound human insight and powerful themes that make Homer’s work resonate some twenty-eight centuries after its composition. Supported by an extensive introduction and the fullest notes and commentary currently available, Mendelsohn’s Odyssey is poised to become the authoritative English-language version of this magnificent, endlessly enjoyable masterpiece.

Homer - James I Porter

The story of our ongoing fascination with Homer, the man and the myth. Â Homer, the great poet of the Iliad and the Odyssey, is revered as a cultural icon of antiquity and a figure of lasting influence. But his identity is shrouded in questions about who he was, when he lived, and whether he was an actual person, a myth, or merely a shared idea. Rather than attempting to solve the mystery of this character, James I. Porter explores the sources of Homerâ ™s mystique and their impact since the first recorded mentions of Homer in ancient Greece. Â Homer: The Very Idea considers Homer not as a man, but as a cultural invention nearly as distinctive and important as the poems attributed to him, following the cultural history of an idea and of the obsession that is reborn every time Homer is imagined. Offering novel readings of texts and objects, the book follows the very idea of Homer from his earliest mentions to his most recent imaginings in literature, criticism, philosophy, visual art, and classical archaeology. Hearing Homer

From the acclaimed biographer of Jane Jacobs and Srinivasa Ramanujan comes the first full life and work of arguably the most influential classical scholar of the twentieth century, who overturned long-entrenched notions of ancient epic poetry and enlarged the very idea of literature. In this literary detective story, Robert Kanigel gives us a long overdue portrait of an Oakland druggist s son who became known as the Darwin of Homeric studies. So thoroughly did Milman Parry change our thinking about the origins of Homer s Iliad and Odyssey that scholars today refer to a before Parry and an after. Kanigel describes the before, when centuries of readers, all the way up until Parry s trailblazing work in the 1930 s, assumed that the Homeric epics were written texts, the way we think of most literature; and the after that we now live in, where we take it for granted that they are the result of a long and winding oral tradition. Parry made it his life s work to develop and prove this revolutionary theory, and Kanigel brilliantly tells his remarkable story--cut short by Parry s mysterious death by gunshot wound at the age of thirty-three.From UC Berkeley to the Sorbonne to Harvard to Yugoslavia--where he traveled to prove his idea definitively by studying its traditional singers of heroic poetry--we follow Parry on his idiosyncratic journey, observing just how his early notions blossomed into a full-fledged theory. Kanigel gives us an intimate portrait of Parry s marriage to Marian Thanhouser and their struggles as young parents in Paris, and explores the mystery surrounding Parry s tragic death at the Palms Hotel in Los Angeles. Tracing Parry s legacy to the modern day, Kanigel explores how what began as a way to understand the Homeric epics became the new field of oral theory, which today illuminates everything from Beowulf to jazz improvisation, from the Old Testament to hip-hop.

Poems from the Soul - M. Wynn Thomas

An exploration of Wales’s deep connections to music through one specific style: the hymn. Even as many in the modern world draw away from organized religion, the great hymns of our time persist: we turn to them at weddings and funerals, at rugby matches, and in pubs.  Bringing together twelve of Wales’s best-loved hymns from the eighteenth to the twentieth century, Poems from the Soul reveals the heart and soul of a people’s poetry. These are the poems of ordinary folk—blacksmiths, farmers, and preachers—and they played a vital role in the creation of the Welsh people. Ranging from the visionary intensity of Ann Griffiths to the striking biblical imagery of Wales’s unofficial national anthem “Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer,” in every hymn a single, singular voice sings out, loud and strong with fear, hope, ecstasy, or anxiety.  With original illustrations by Ruth Jên Evans throughout, this collection offers insights into the making of a modern nation and demonstrates the transformative power of voices raised in song.

With an Introduction and Notes by Adam Roberts, Royal Holloway, University of London. The product of more than a decade s continuous work (1598-1611), Chapman s translation of Homer s great poem of war is a magnificent testimony to the power of The Iliad. In muscular, onward-rolling verse Chapman retells the story of Achilles, the great warrior, and his terrible wrath before the walls of besieged Troy, and the destruction it wreaks on both Greeks and Trojans.Chapman regarded the translation of this epic, and of Homer s Odyssey (also available in Wordsworth Editions) as his life s work, and dedicated himself to capturing the soul of the poem.Swinburne praised the resulting translation for its â ˜romantic and sometimes barbaric grandeur, its freshness, strength, and inexhaustible fireâ ™, qualities that reflect the grandeur, fire and brutality of the original poem. This new edition includes a critical introduction and extensive notes, rendering Chapmanâ ™s extraordinary poetic masterpiece accessible to modern readers.

Fitzgerald has solved virtually every problem that has plagued translators of Homer. Atlantic Monthly The Iliad is the story of a few days fighting in the tenth year of the legendary war between the Greeks and the Trojans, which broke out when Paris, son of King Priam of Troy, abducted the fabulously beautiful Helen, wife of King Menelaus of Sparta. After a quarrel between the Greek commander, Agamemnon, and the greatest of the Greek warriors, Achilles, the gods become more closely involved in the action. Their intervention leads to the tragic death of Hector, the Trojan leader, and to the final defeat of the Trojans. But the Iliad is much more than a series of battle scenes. It is a work of extraordinary pathos and profundity that concerns itself with issues as fundamental as the meaning of life and death. Even the heroic ethic itself - with its emphasis on pride, honour, prowess in battle, and submission to the inexorable will of the gods - is not left unquestioned. Claiming that Odysseus is dead, a host of suitors have taken up residence in his home, eating up his wealth and trying to persuade Penelope to marry one of them. Penelope steadfastly refuses. Odysseus, in fact, is alive. Odysseus has spent seven years as a captive of the nymph Calypso, the gods finally take pity on him and persuade her to set him free. When he resumes his journey home, the sea god Poseidon sends a great storm to destroy his raft. Exhausted and near death, Odysseus and his men wash up on an island shore. Winslow Homer in Watercolor

Resplendent watercolors of the 19th-century world by New England native Winslow Homer You will see, said American artist Winslow Homer, in the future I will live by my watercolors. From his early forays into pastoral landscapes to his more mature works encompassing the maritime scenes for which he is best known, Homer s watercolors are most remarkable for their reverence of nature and the people who thrive within its conditionsâ ”sketches that are both quaint and sublime in scope. Boasting one of the most significant collections of Homer s watercolors in the United States, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, presents a luminous collection of nearly 50 works that demonstrate the artist s mastery of the medium. Readers will be transported to the rugged Maine coast, the rivers and streams of the Adirondacks, the weathered shores of seaside England and the bright beaches of the Caribbean. The many facets of these environmentsâ ”ecological, artistic, social and economicâ ”are reflected in Homer s thoughtful compositions that, though more than 100 years old, shine with a modern effervescence. Winslow Homer (1836â “1910) was born in Boston and apprenticed to a commercial lithographer. He taught himself painting while working as a freelance illustrator for Harper s and other magazines. In 1883 he moved into his permanent home and studio in Prouts Neck, Maine, but continued to find inspiration in his travels to Canada, Cuba, the Bahamas, Key West and the Adirondacks.

Kitchen Hymns - Padraig O Tuama

Kitchen hymns are the songs sung at home, not in the chapel; in vernacular speech, not Latin. The poems in Padraig O Tuama s new collection are a form of hymnody that arise neither from belief nor devotion. A man asks himself if he believes in God and turns to language rather than the maker of language; an agnostic Jesus meets a curious Persephone at hell s exit; a mass for the end of the world is offered by some- one more interested in birds than in salvation. In registers of rage, eros and melody, towards nature, elegy and praise, Kitchen Hymns is a study in form and lyric address: the sights and sounds of a poem; the lungs of the world; skin touching skin; experience. Here are poems of originality and feeling - a provocation to thought, and an invocation of the forces that direct the strange, branching paths of our lives.

The Iliad - Homér

The best modern prose translation of The Iliad Robin Lane Fox, The TimesThe first of the world s great tragedies, The Iliad centres on the pivotal four days towards the end of the ten-year war between the Greeks and the Trojans. In a series of dramatic set pieces, it follows the story of the humiliation of Achilleus at the hands of Agamemnon and his slaying of Hektor: a barbarous act with repercussions that ultimately determine the fate of Troy. The Iliad not only paints an intimate picture of individual experience, but also offers a universal perspective in which human loss and suffering are set against a vast and unpitying divine background where fickle, quarrelsome gods decide the fate of men.Translated with an Introduction by Martin Hammond

It is a story of many truths, speaking of awesome emotions, the quest for fame and revenge, the plight of women, and the lighthearted laughter of the gods. Ilias a Odyssea. Výběr zpěvů z básnických eposů řeckého starověku - Homér - audiokniha

Audiokniha: Komentář k původnímu LP 0 18 0424 z roku 1968: Přebohatou obrazností plastickou zvládl řecký člověk vzrušení, úžas i tíhu dojmů z tohoto světa a dal mu jméno kosmos, tj. Proti lehkomyslnému krasavci Paridovi statečný hrdina i něžný otec rodiny Hektór, hrdý Agamemnón, nebojácný Aiás, váhavý Meneláos, vznětlivý Diomédés, bystrý a chytrý Odysseus. V Odysseji má Helena neméně ušlechtilý protiklad v Pénelopě, oddané a věrné choti Odysseově. Krásný a statečný Achilleus bude vždycky dojímat krátkostí svého lidského údělu a nevýslovnou láskou k životu. Teprve mnohem později, kdy mýtus již nebyl s to vycházet vstříc rozmanitým obměnám lidského soužení, novodobý román, zvláště psychologický, osamělé hledání vnitřní jistoty, rozvinul k dokonalosti umění introspekce a analýzy zážitků lidského nitra. A nebyl by to lidský úděl, kdyby s tou plností a vášnivostí života nekontrastovala skutečnost smrti.

One of the greatest epics in Western literature, THE ILIAD recounts the story of the Trojan wars. This timeless poem still vividly conveys the horror and heroism of men and gods battling amidst devastation and destruction, as it moves to its tragic conclusion. In his introduction, Bernard Knox observes that although the violence of the Iliad is grim and relentless, it co-exists with both images of civilized life and a poignant yearning for peace.
