Das Kurzepos "Mai" ist nicht nur eines der wichtigsten Werke der Romantik, es diente auch wegen seines avantgardistischen Bilderreichtums den tschechischen Surrealisten als Vorbild und stellt bis heute ein Fundament der tschechischen Dichtung dar. Die lautmalerische Übersetzung des österreichisch-tschechischen Dichters Ondřej Cikán (*1985) ist die erste, die die formalen Eigenheiten des Originals nachahmt. Da diese zum Teil in einer gewissen rhythmischen Freiheit bestehen, gelingt es Cikán, auch den Inhalt besonders präzise zu übertragen.
