The Railways of Glasgow - Gordon D. Webster

The city of Glasgow, formerly one of the largest industrial centres in the world, was once responsible for building about one-quarter of the world''s railway locomotives. This was complemented by a massive urban railway network: the second largest in the UK. However, the Beeching Report of 1963 inevitably took its toll on Glasgow. This book examines the changing face of Glasgow''s railways ever since that infamous report, starting with the period of rationalisation and industrial decline that followed. It also explores the revival enjoyed in the last few decades, with lines reopened and modern rolling stock introduced. Furthermore, with Glasgow hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games, it looks at the emphasis being placed on the railway as further development work takes place.

The Mackerel Years - Kathleen Sheldon

In the early 1980s, Kathleen Sheldon traveled to Mozambique to pursue research for her doctoral dissertation in history, accompanied by her physician husband who worked for the Ministry of Health, and their toddler daughter who attended local childcare. Their travel there was an act of solidarity with the newly independent socialist Frelimo government, which had called for international supporters who were called cooperantes. Amidst the height of the Cold War, international politics impeded her research and her family''s access to food and other essential supplies. For many Mozambicans, those years are remembered as the mackerel years (os anos de carapau), referring to the distasteful fish that for many months was the only source of protein available in the markets.

Churches of Glasgow - Gordon Adams

Glasgow has long been an important settlement on the River Clyde but it grew rapidly in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to become one of the largest cities in the world in that period. The largest seaport in Scotland, it was a major city in the Scottish enlightenment and the transatlantic trade brought wealth to the city. At the same time Glasgow was becoming an important industrial city, particularly in shipbuilding, engineering, chemicals and textiles, bringing in large numbers of people. The churches range from the elegant eighteenth-century St Vincent Street Church, to the intimate Govan Old Parish Church with its unsurpassed collection of medieval monument stones, the unique Queen’s Cross, the only church built by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and many more gems. This fascinating picture of an important part of the history of Glasgow over the centuries will be of interest to all those who ...
