The Descent of Man - Charles Darwin
In The Descent of Man Darwin addresses many of the issues raised by his notorious Origin of Species: finding in the traits and instincts of animals the origins of the mental abilities of humans, of language, of our social structures and our moral capacities, he attempts to show that there is no clear dividing line between animals and humans. Most importantly, he accounts for what Victorians called the ‘races’ of mankind by means of what he calls sexual selection. This book presents a full explanation of Darwin’s ideas about sexual selection, including his belief that many important characteristics of human beings and animals have emerged in response to competition for mates. This was a controversial work. Yet Darwin tried hard to avoid being branded as a radical revolutionary. He is steeped in Victorian sensibilities regarding gender and cultural differences: he sees human civilization as a move from barbarous savagery to modern gentlefolk, and women as more emotional and less intellectual than men, thus providing a biological basis for the social assumptions and prejudices of the day. The Descent of Man played a major role in the emergence of social Darwinism. This complete version of the first edition gives the modern reader ... Unknown localization key: "more"

On the Origin of Species - Charles Darwin
A new, deluxe hardcover edition of one of the most important scientific works ever written In December 1831, Charles Darwin boarded the HMS Beagle, accompanying her crew on a five-year journey that crossed the Atlantic Ocean to survey the coasts of South America. As the expedition’s geologist and naturalist, Darwin collected evidence from the Galapagos Islands and other locations which prompted him to speculate that species evolve over generations through a process of natural selection. In 1859, Darwin published On the Origin of Species, a work of scientific literature considered to be the foundation of evolutionary biology. His revolutionary work presented evidence from the Beagle expedition as well as from years of subsequent research and experimentation. Written for non-specialists, Darwin’s book gained widespread interest from the scientific community, religious leaders, politicians and the general public. The theory Darwin presented in his book quickly became the subject of heated debate and discussion. Now accepted by the scientific community, Darwin’s concepts of evolutionary adaptation via natural selection are central to modern evolutionary theory and form the foundation of modern life sciences. Perhaps the most transformative scientific volume ever published, this volume of the first edition of On the Origin of Species: Outlines ... Unknown localization key: "more"

''can we doubt ... that individuals having any advantage, however slight, over others, would have the best chance of surviving and of procreating their kind?''In the Origin of Species (1859) Darwin challenged many of the most deeply held beliefs of the Western world. His insistence on the immense length of the past and on the abundance of life-forms, present and extinct, dislodged man from his central position in creation and called into question the role of the Creator. He showed that new species are achieved by natural selection, and that absence of plan is an inherent part of the evolutionary process.Darwin''s prodigious reading, experimentation, and observations on his travels fed into his great work, which draws on material from the Galapagos Islands to rural Staffordshire, from English back gardens to colonial encounters. The present edition provides a detailed and accessible discussion of his theories and adds an account of the immediate responses to the book on publication. The resistances as well as the enthusiasms of the first readers cast light on recent controversies, particularly concerning questions of design and descent. The Origin of Species - Charles Darwin
When the eminent naturalist Charles Darwin returned from South America on board the HMS Beagle in 1836, he brought with him the notes and evidence that would form the basis of a world-changing theory: the evolution of species by a process of natural selection. This theory, published as On the Origin of Species in 1859, is the basis of modern biology and the concept of biodiversity. Its publication sparked a fierce scientific, religious and philosophical debate which continues to this day.

The Origin of Species - Charles Darwin
With an Introduction by Jeff Wallace. 'A grain in the balance will determine which individual shall live and which shall die...'. Darwin's theory of natural selection issued a profound challenge to orthodox thought and belief: no being or species has been specifically created; all are locked into a pitiless struggle for existence, with extinction looming for those not fitted for the task.Yet The Origin of Species (1859) is also a humane and inspirational vision of ecological interrelatedness, revealing the complex mutual interdependencies between animal and plant life, climate and physical environment, and - by implication - within the human world. Written for the general reader, in a style which combines the rigour of science with the subtlety of literature, The Origin of Species remains one of the founding documents of the modern age.

He had expected outrage and accusations of heresy, but this letter was different: it accused him of taking credit for a theory that wasn''t his. Yet when he tried to trace his intellectual forebears, he found that history had already forgotten them...Rediscovering Aristotle on the shores of Lesbos and Leonardo da Vinci fossil hunting in the Tuscan hills, this is a masterful retelling of the collective daring of a few like-minded men, whose early theories flew in the face of prevailing political and religious orthodoxies and laid the foundations for Darwin''s revolutionary idea.

Y: The Descent Of Men - Professor Steve Jones
Men, towards the end of the last millennium, felt a sudden tightening of the bowels with the news that the services of their sex had at last been dispensed with. Dolly the Sheep - conceived without male assistance - had arrived. Her birth reminded at least half the population of how precarious man''s position may be. What is the point of being a man? For a brief and essential instant he is a donor of DNA; but outside that glorious moment his role is hard to understand. This book is about science not society; about maleness not manhood. The condition is, in the end, a matter of biology, whatever limits that science may have in explaining the human condition. Today''s advances in medicine and in genetics mean at last we understand why men exist and why they are so frequent. We understand from hormones to hydraulics how man''s machinery works, why he dies so young and how his brain differs from that of the rest of mankind.

Wilde encourages an overhaul of the structures that allow such inequalities to exist. The Soul of Man Under Socialism is an insightful look into Wilde’s personal and political beliefs. Within the essay he emphasizes individualism over group think, using Jesus Christ as a prime example. Ice to Athelstan – The Emergence of England - Charles Boundy
With such concentration on the Tudors onwards, the English risk losing sight of their nation’s roots. Ice to Athelstan fills that gap by presenting the story of the country’s origins in a succinct and accessible way.In twelve short chapters the book covers some 10,000 years from the time of the last Ice Age, when Britain was a frozen desert, until the short reign of the first king of England. It tells the story of who came, when, from where, why, and what effect they had, as the country was populated, taken over, abandoned, contested and assaulted before the House of Wessex prevailed. In the process it examines the emergent England’s links with Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France and Scandinavia as England’s neighbours underwent their own national evolution. In bringing together a summary of how England emerged, Ice to Athelstan delves deeper into many of the underlying issues, such as the significance of Iron Age monuments, the extent to which people changed or were replaced, the growth of early tribes and kingdoms, and the origins and actions of the successive waves of incomers who went to make up the country’s 10th century population.Â

But this is a strange place, with otherworldly inhabitants, including flame-haired Ãlfheiður, who makes him wonder whether it is possible to love two women at once; he had believed his heart was lost to Ragnheiður, the daughter of the wealthy merchant in the village to which he must now inexorably return. Set in the awe-inspiring wilderness of the extreme north, The Heart of Man is a profound exploration of life, love and desire, written with a sublime simplicity. In this conclusion to an audacious trilogy, Stefánsson brings a poet''s eye and a philosopher''s insight to a tale worthy of the sagasmiths of old.

The Runic Inscriptions of the Isle of Man - Michael Barnes
This book provides a modern, scholary edition of the runic inscriptions, Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon, discovered in the Isle of Man. All are carved into stone and most are commemorative in nature. A broad view has been taken of the Manx runic material. Weight is given to runological and linguistic questions, in particular graph-types and their implications, orthography, the origin and linguistic background of the rune carvers, and language contract and its possible consequences. But attention is also directed at matters such as dating and the implications of what the inscriptions say for our understanding of Manx society at the time they were made. Archaeology and art history are brought into the discussion insofar as these fields of study cast light on the inscriptions and their context. Emphasis is further placed on the nature of the discovery of the rune-stones, their subsequent history and their treatment by earlier scholars. The work is copiously illustrated. It contains recent photographs of all the stones and their runes, computerised drawings of each inscription, and significant early depictions of parts of the material.

The Ascent of Humanity - Charles Eisenstein
The author of The More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know Is Possible explores the history and potential future of civilization, tracing the converging crises of our age to the illusion of the separate self Our disconnection from one another and the natural world has mislaid the foundations of science, religion, money, technology, economics, medicine, and education as we know them. It has fired our near-pathological pursuit of technological Utopias even as we push ourselves and our planet to the brink of collapse. Fortunately, an Age of Reunion is emerging out of the birth pangs of an earth in crisis. Our journey of separation hasn''t been a terrible mistake but an evolutionary process and an adventure in self-discovery.Even in our darkest hour, Eisenstein sees the possibility of a more beautiful world—not through the extension of millennia-old methods of management and control but by fundamentally reimagining ourselves and our systems. We must shift away from our Babelian efforts to build ever-higher towers to heaven and instead turn out attention to creating a new kind of civilization—one designed for beauty rather than height.
