The Country of the Blind and other Selected Stories - Herbert George Wells

Herbert George Wells was perhaps best known as the author of such classic works of science fiction as The Time Machine and War of the Worlds. But it was in his short stories, written when he was a young man embarking on a literary career, that he first explored the enormous potential of the scientific discoveries of the day. He described his stories as "a miscellany of inventions," yet his enthusiasm for science was tempered by an awareness of its horrifying destructive powers and the threat it could pose to the human race. A consummate storyteller, he made fantastic creatures and machines entirely believable; and, by placing ordinary men and women in extraordinary situations, he explored, with humor, what it means to be alive in a century of rapid scientific progress.

The Time Machine and Other Works - Herbert George Wells

In these ''scientific romances'' H. G. Wells sees the present reflected in the future and the future in the present. His aim is to provoke rather than predict. The Sleeper falls into a trance, waking up two centuries later as the richest man in a world of new technologies, power-greedy leaders, sensual elites, and brutalised industrial slaves. Arriving in the year 802,701, the Time-Traveller finds that humanity has evolved into two drastically different species; going farther still, he witnesses the ultimate fate of the solar system. The Chronic Argonauts, the original version of The Time Machine, pits a scientist with daring views of time and space against superstitious villagers. In all three works Wells laces vivid adventure stories with the latest ideas in biology and physics.

The Invisible Man and The Food of the Gods - Herbert George Wells

With an Introduction and Notes by Linda Dryden, Professor of English Literature at Edinburgh Napier University and the author of Joseph Conrad and H. G. Wells: The Fin-de Siecle-Literary Scene. At the end of the nineteenth century a stranger arrives in the Sussex countryside and mayhem ensues; in the sleepy county of Kent a miracle food brings biological chaos that engulfs and threatens the entire planet. H. G. Wells''s fertile and mercurial imagination never brought us more bizarre and unsettling stories than those revealed in The Invisible Man (1897) and The Food of the Gods, and How It Came to Earth (1904). These are stories of extraordinary physical transformations and are at once extremely funny and richly imaginative. At the same time, Wells poses some very probing questions about the ethical dimensions to science and the human capacity for both pity and cruelty. Brought together for the first time in this new Wordsworth edition, The Invisible Man and The Food of the Gods are two of Wells''s most entertaining and thought-provoking works.

Vynálezci zázraků. Sebrané povídky H. G. Wellse. Svazek I - Herbert George Wells

Anglický spisovatel Herbert George Wells proslul zejména svými sci-fi romány Válka světů nebo Stroj času, neméně bohatá je ovšem i jeho povídková tvorba. I v ní hrají fantastické motivy významnou roli – například v příbězích o létajícím stroji či tajemné observatoři –, ale Wellsovi nejsou cizí ani povídky s prvky tajemna, dobrodružství a humoru. Vynálezci zázraků jsou prvním z plánovaných tří svazků Wellsových sebraných povídek. První oddíl tohoto svazku s názvem Ukradený bacil a jiné příběhy obsahuje patnáct po¬vídek původně publikovaných v různých periodikách v letech 1893 až 1895, které poprvé jako celek vyšly v knize The Stolen Bacillus and Other Incidents (1895). K těmto povídkám připo¬jujeme povídku „Temporální argonauti“ (Chronic Argonauts) z roku 1888. Druhý oddíl tvoří všech sedmnáct povídek ze souboru The Plattner Story and Other (1897), jež samostatně vychá¬zely v letech 1894 až 1896 vyjma povídek „Ztracené dědictví“ (The Lost Inheritance) a „Jak Jane dostala košem“ (The Jilting of Jane), které se prvně objevily právě až v tomto souborném vydání.

The Time Machine - Herbert George Wells

''So, in the end, above ground you must have the Haves, pursuing pleasure and comfort and beauty, and below ground the Have-nots, the Workers...''At a Victorian dinner party, in Richmond, London, the Time Traveller returns to tell his extraordinary tale of mankind''s future in the year 802,701 AD. It is a dystopian vision of Darwinian evolution, with humans split into an above-ground species of Eloi, and their troglodyte brothers. The first book H. G. Wells published, The Time Machine is a scientific romance that helped invent the genre of science fiction and the time travel story. Even before its serialisation had finished in the spring of 1895, Wells had been declared ''a man of genius'', and the book heralded a fifty year career of a major cultural and political controversialist. It is a sardonic rejection of Victorian ideals of progress and improvement and a detailed satirical commentary on the Decadent culture of the 1890s.This edition features a contextual introduction, detailed explanatory notes, and two essays Wells wrote just prior to the publication of his first book.

''The creatures I had seen were not men, had never been men. Disturbed by the cries of animals in pain, and by his encounters with half-bestial creatures, Edward slowly realises his danger and the extremes of the Doctor''s experiments.Saturated in pain and disgust, suffused with grotesque and often unbearable images of torture and bodily mutilation, The Island of Doctor Moreau is unquestionably a shocking novel. It is also a serious, and highly knowledgeable, philosophical engagement with Wells''s times, with their climate of scientific openness and advancement, but also their anxieties about the ethical nature of scientific discoveries, and their implications for religion. Darryl Jones''s introduction places the book in both its scientific and literary context; with the Origin of Species and Gulliver''s Travels, and argues that The Island of Doctor Moreau is, like all of Wells''s best fiction, is fundamentally a novel of ideas

Stroj času, Neviditeľný a iné. Po prvej svetovej vojne napísal monumentálne trojzväzkové dejiny Náčrt histórie sveta v rozsahu 1 324 strán, z ktorých vytvoril kratšiu verziu pod názvom Stručné dejiny sveta. Tie vyšli roku 1922 a predstavujú podrobný a detailný opis fyzického, duchovného a intelektuálneho vývinu ľudstva a zaznamenávajú kľúčové udalosti celej histórie sveta. Týmto svojím úžasným myšlienkovým počinom osvetľuje kontinuitu dejín a provokuje čitateľov, aby rozmýšľali o dôsledkoch budúceho vývinu spoločnosti založenom na vtedajšom vedeckom a intelektuálnom poznaní.

Ostrov doktora Moreaua - Herbert George Wells

Ostrov doktora Moreaua je jeden z prvých románov dnes už klasického anglického autora žánru vedecko-fantastickej literatúry Herberta Georgea Wellsa. Román podáva príbeh stroskotanca Prendicka, ktorého pred istou smrťou zachráni čln doktora Moreaua. Hoci román patrí medzi rané diela tohto klasika sci-fi literatúry, nesie významné morálne a filozofické posolstvo.

The Time Machine - Herbert George Wells

A Victorian scientist and inventor creates a machine for propelling himself through time, and voyages to the year AD 802701, where he discovers a race of humanoids called the Eloi. Their gently indolent way of life, set in a decaying cityscape, leads the scientist to believe that they are the remnants of a once great civilization. He is forced to revise this assessment when he comes across the cave dwellings of threatening ape-like creatures known as Morlocks, whose dark underground world he must explore to discover the terrible secrets of this fractured society, and the means of getting back to his own time.A biting critique of class and social equality as well as an innovative and much imitated piece of science fiction which introduced the idea of time travel into the popular consciousness, The Time Machine is a profound and extraordinarily prescient novel.

The War of the Worlds - Herbert George Wells

''Cities, nations, civilization, progress-it''s all over. That game''s up. We''re beat.''One of the most important and influential invasion narratives ever written, The War of the Worlds (1897) describes the coming of the Martians, who land in Woking, and make their way remorselessly towards the capital, wreaking chaos, death, and destruction. The novel is closely associated with anxiety about a possible invasion of Great Britain at the turn of the century, and concerns about imperial expansion and its impact, and it drew on the latest astronomical knowledge to imagine a desert planet, Mars, turning to Earth for its future. The Martians are also evolutionarily superior to mankind.
