The Camera at War - Hilary Roberts
It is said that the first casualty of war is truth. But in the arena of war photography, the truth is never simple.Drawing on an incredible range of imagery from the Imperial War Museum s vast collection and other major archives around the globe, expert curator Hilary Roberts presents a new perspective on the role of image manipulation in this field over the past 170 years, exploring the consequences for our understanding of historic and contemporary conflicts. From the staged scenes and hand-coloured Daguerreotypes of the Crimean War at the very beginning of conflict photography to the AI-generated protest and propaganda imagery of today, Roberts explores the myriad ways in which layers of meaning can be added, erased or changed completely. As The Camera at War so powerfully reveals, sometimes this has been done in order to present a closer approximation of the truth, and sometimes for the causes of national morale, subterfuge and control of the winning narrative.

The Welsh at War - Steven John
The Welsh at War trilogy is the culmination of over twelve years of painstaking research by the author into the Welsh men and infantry units who fought in the Great War. These units included the four regular regiments â “ the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, South Wales Borderers Welsh Regiment and Welsh Guards â “ as well as the Territorial Monmouthshire Regiment, the Yeomanry regiments: the Denbighshire Hussars, Pembroke Yeomanry, Montgomeryshire Yeomanry, Glamorgan Yeomanry and Welsh Horse Yeomanry and their amalgamation into service battalions for the regular regiments during 1917. Welsh troops fought with great courage in every theatre of the war â “ the Western Front, Aden, China, Gallipoli, Egypt, India, Italy, Salonika and in Palestine â “ and as well as the casualties who were suffered during these campaigns, many men gained recognition for acts of gallantry. The three volumes, split chronologically, cover all of the major actions and incidents in which each of the Welsh infantry regiments took part, as well as stories of Welsh airmen, Welshmen shot at dawn, Welsh rugby players who fell, Welsh gallantry winners and the Welshmen who died in non-Welsh units, such as the Dominion forces and other units of the British armed forces. While chronicling a history of the war through the events and battles that Welshmen took part in, the stories of many individual casualties are included throughout, together with many compelling photographs of the men and their last resting places. Volume III â “ â ˜Through Mud To Victoryâ ™ â “ â ˜Third Ypres And The 1918 Offensivesâ ™ â “ records the stories of the Welsh troops involved in the Third Battle of Ypres, from the Welsh battalions of the 19th (Western) Division at Messines Ridge, through the storming of the Pilckem Ridge by the 38th (Welsh) Division and the Guards Division; and the Welsh troops who fought in the final offensives at Passchendaele Ridge. The actions of Welsh troops during the Battle of Cambrai carry through to the final winter of the war and the volume records the sufferings of Welsh troops fighting during the desperate German â ˜Kaiserschlachtâ ™, offensives of the spring of 1918; and carries through the summer of 1918, when the 38th (Welsh) Division moved back to the Somme, to the actions of Welsh troops during the 100 Days Offensive which finally ended the war. The volume also covers the stories of the final battles in Italy, Salonika and Palestine, which saw Welsh troops play a large part.

Leadership in War - Andrew Roberts
Wonderful ... among military historians, Roberts is Britain s crown gem Wall Street Journal Taking us from the French Revolution to the Cold War and the Falklands, celebrated historian Andrew Roberts presents us with a bracingly honest and insightful look at nine major figures in modern history: Napoleon Bonaparte, Horatio Nelson, Winston Churchill, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, George C. Marshall, Charles de Gaulle, Dwight D. Eisenhower and Margaret Thatcher. Each of these leaders fundamentally shaped the outcome of the war their nation was embroiled in. How were they alike, and in what ways did they differ? Was their war leadership unique, or did these leaders have something in common, traits and techniques that transcend time and place and can be applied to the fundamental nature of conflict?Meticulously researched and compellingly written, Leadership in War presents readers with fresh, complex portraits of leaders who approached war with different tactics and different weapons, but with the common goal of success in the face of battle. Both inspiring and cautionary, these portraits offer important lessons on leadership in times of struggle. With his trademark verve and incisive observation, Roberts reveals the qualities that doom even the most promising leaders to failure, and the qualities that lead to victory.

The Work We Need - Hilary Cottam
Highly recommend - practical and full of human wisdom FINANCIAL TIMES Brimming with ideas to transform the future KATE RAWORTH, author of DOUGHNUT ECONOMICS An act of radical hope, radical listening and radical humility . . . I loved it RORY STEWARTWork, for decades, has been debated and discussed as a narrow economic category. Instead, Hilary Cottam identifies work as a cultural force at the heart of good lives, strong communities and a sense of a shared national destiny. Crucially, in these dramatic times, she shows how we can shape this force to meet technological change, our ecological crisis and the challenges of the world s deep injustices. We can create a work revolution. Ambitious but rooted in the ideas of everyday experts - real workers from all walks of life - this is a realistic and hopeful book. Hilary Cottam has crossed the UK and the USA; she s spent time in communities considered by outsiders as left behind and in places at the centre of financial and technological power. Drawing on a fascinating range of sources - historians, trade unionists, business leaders, philosophers and most originally, hours of her imaginative workshops with workers - Hilary Cottam boldly asks: how can we redesign work? Our challenges - political, social, economic and environmental - are tangled and growing. But so are the imaginative solutions. In this exciting, inspiring and optimistic book, Hilary shows us how we could work differently and live better. So valuable . . . Napoleon the Great - Andrew Roberts
A Napoleonic triumph of a book, irresistibly galloping with the momentum of a cavalry charge Simon Sebag Montefiore Simply dynamite Bernard CornwellFrom Andrew Roberts, author of the bestsellers The Storm of War and Churchill: Walking with Destiny, this is the definitive modern biography of Napoleon.Napoleon Bonaparte lived one of the most extraordinary of all human lives. In the space of just twenty years, from October 1795 when as a young artillery captain he cleared the streets of Paris of insurrectionists, to his final defeat at the (horribly mismanaged) battle of Waterloo in June 1815, Napoleon transformed France and Europe. After seizing power in a coup d état he ended the corruption and incompetence into which the Revolution had descended. In a series of dazzling battles he reinvented the art of warfare; in peace, he completely remade the laws of France, modernised her systems of education and administration, and presided over a flourishing of the beautiful Empire style in the arts. The impossibility of defeating his most persistent enemy, Great Britain, led him to make draining and ultimately fatal expeditions into Spain and Russia, where half a million Frenchmen died and his Empire began to unravel.More than any other modern biographer, Andrew Roberts conveys Napoleon s tremendous energy, both physical and intellectual, and the attractiveness of his personality, even to his enemies. He has walked 53 of Napoleon s 60 battlefields, and has absorbed the gigantic new French edition of Napoleon s letters, which allows a complete re-evaluation of this exceptional man. He overturns many received opinions, including the myth of a great romance with Josephine: she took a lover immediately after their marriage, and, as Roberts shows, he had three times as many mistresses as he acknowledged.Of the climactic Battle of Leipzig in 1813, as the fighting closed around them, a French sergeant-major wrote, No-one who has not experienced it can have any idea of the enthusiasm that burst forth among the half-starved, exhausted soldiers when the Emperor was there in person. If all were demoralised and he appeared, his presence was like an electric shock. All shouted Vive l Empereur! and everyone charged blindly into the fire. The reader of this biography will understand why this was so.

The Joy of Snacking - Hilary Fitzgerald Campbell
New Yorker cartoonist and author of Murder Book Hilary Fitzgerald Campbell returns with a riotous and radically candid comic memoir about snacks, connection, and developing a taste for freedom. From standup comedian, New Yorker cartoonist, and the author of Murder Book comes this fresh comics memoir about being a snacker in a world of foodies. With equal parts humor and unflinching honesty, Hilary traces her life story through food: from her childhood as the ultimate picky eater, her teenage and young adult years of disordered eating, and finally learning to love herself again. Punctuated throughout with ridiculous (but very real! and important!) snack recipes like a baggie of goldfish and burnt toast, Campbell captures the reality of growing up in a woman #39;s body in the #39;90s and #39;00s in how it shaped her life in work, friendship, and dating. Especially dating. Aren #39;t we all seeking love, self-acceptance, and a good snack to get you through it? These hilarious stories of family, romance, and belonging prove that if food can isolate us, it also has the power to connect us to what matters most.

Mountain Commandos at War in the Falklands - Rodney Boswell
Sunset, 8 June 1982, East Falkland. Eight specially trained Royal Marines infiltrate Goat Ridge, a long rocky hilltop between Mount Harriet and Two Sisters which are occupied by a battalion of 600 Argentine infantry. The next day, from their hiding place just metres away from the enemy, they note and sketch the Argentine positions, then withdraw as stealthily as they had come. Their daring patrol provides essential intelligence that guided the British assault which overwhelmed the Argentine defences two days later. This was just one example of the missions undertaken by the Royal Marines Mountain and Arctic Warfare Cadre during the Falklands War, all of which are described in graphic detail in Rod Boswellâ ™s eyewitness account. Using his own recollections and those of his comrades, he describes their operations in the Falklands â “ the observation posts set up in the no manâ ™s land between San Carlos and Port Stanley, their role in the raid at Top Malo House, and the reconnaissance patrols they carried out close to the Argentine lines during the conflict. His first-hand account gives a fascinating insight into the operational skills of a small, specially trained unit and shows the important contribution it made to the success of the British advance. It also records the entire experience of the Falklands War from their point of view â “ the long voyage south through the Atlantic, the landings, the advance and the liberation of Stanley.

The Chief - Andrew Roberts
#39;Superb...his pages fizz with character and colour #39; Dominic Sandbrook, Sunday Times #39;Scholarly and very readable #39; Andrew Lycett, Spectator #39;Energetic and hugely entertaining #39; A.N.Wilson, TLSThe definitive biography of Alfred Harmsworth, 1st Viscount Northcliffe, the first and greatest press magnate in history and the genius who invented modern popular journalism. The turn of the century was a period when the world was opening up in new and exciting ways – radio, telegrams, the advent of flight. With literacy and the right to vote extending across an ever-expanding populace, politics and journalism were embarking on a power struggle that continues unabated to this day. Lord Northcliffe rose to the challenges of this new world by employing cutting-edge technology, upending the outdated mores of traditional journalism and radically reshaping the very concept of ‘news’. He was a tough and uncompromising businessman, frequently levelled with charges of megalomania, but in The Chief Andrew Roberts puts Northcliffe’s ruthlessness in the context of a life of visionary business skill, journalistic brilliance, distinguished wartime public service and heartfelt patriotism. The man was, undoubtedly, a genius – albeit a flawed one. From a modest background, growing up on the outskirts of Dublin, by twenty-seven he presided over a magazine empire with the largest circulation in the world. By the time of his tragically early death in 1922, Northcliffe had founded the Daily Mail and Daily Mirror, and had also owned The Times and the Observer. At one point he owned two thirds of all the titles on Fleet Street. Based on exclusive access to the Harmsworth family archive, The Chief charts Lord Northcliffe’s rise to power and his highly controversial influence in a politically critical period. His influence still resonates today both through his remarkable business innovations and in the way we consume our news and politics.

Cornelia Van Gorder and her guests spend a rainy night at her leased summer home looking for stolen money they think is concealed there while being followed by a disguised intruder known as the Bat. This is a comedy with mystery elements. At the conclusion of the last act, The Bat s identity is made known. The Circular Staircase, a 1908 mystery novel by Rinehart, served as the inspiration for the original play s plot. In order to adapt the story for the stage, Rinehart and Hopwood added the titular antagonist. The Selig Polyscope Company, who produced the 1915 motion picture adaptation of the book with the same name, The Circular Staircase, engaged in a legal battle over the film rights as a result of the relationship to the book. The piece premiered as The Bat at the Morosco Theatre on Broadway on August 23, 1920, after performing as A Thief in the Night during previews. Both critically and financially successful, The Bat. There were 327 performances in London and 867 in New York, and various road companies toured the show to other cities

The Unwomanly Face of War - Alexievich Svetlana
A must read - Margaret Atwood It would be hard to find a book that feels more important or original - Viv Groskop, ObserverExtraordinary stories from Soviet women who fought in the Second World War - from the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature Why, having stood up for and held their own place in a once absolutely male world, have women not stood up for their history? Their words and feelings? A whole world is hidden from us. Their war remains unknown... I want to write the history of that war. A women s history. In the late 1970s, Svetlana Alexievich set out to write her first book, The Unwomanly Face of War, when she realized that she grew up surrounded by women who had fought in the Second World War but whose stories were absent from official narratives. Travelling thousands of miles, she spent years interviewing hundreds of Soviet women - captains, tank drivers, snipers, pilots, nurses and doctors - who had experienced the war on the front lines, on the home front and in occupied territories. As it brings to light their most harrowing memories, this symphony of voices reveals a different side of war, a new range of feelings, smells and colours. After completing the manuscript in 1983, Alexievich was not allowed to publish it because it went against the state-sanctioned history of the war. With the dawn of Perestroika, a heavily censored edition came out in 1985 and it became a huge bestseller in the Soviet Union - the first in five books that have established her as the conscience of the twentieth century.

The Civil War - Jeremy Black
The American Civil War may have been more consequential to American history (and its global supremacy) than its Revolutionary War and participation in all other world wars. The influence of this war is not just reduced to the victory of the north and its economic infrastructure, but the fact of Union success ushered in the notion of what it means to be American that even the revolution could not instill. European military historian Jeremy Black reorients readers to see what was extraordinary in the civil war of the American colonies and why this was warfare unlike anything that could be properly understood on the world stage at that time. He also examines with expertise the role of foreign powers (or lack thereof). Black s treatment might be the doom of civil war counterfactuals. Was the south destined to fail? Was it weaker motive, faulty strategy, or lack of European support? Was the north just lucky, or possessed of foresight and providential endowment? Black dispels romanticism and sentimentalist hindsightâ “â “the American Civil War is unparalleled in many respects, but it is not without clear lessons in warcraft, diplomacy, and culturalâ “economic impasse. Furthermore, Black s Civil War is a new resource that teaches, reaffirms, and reminds readers of the intensity of the American pastâ “â “in both error and idealistic impulseâ “â “that might continue to guide us to the best future and avoid the lose-lose circumstances of a civil war. Black s acumen for historical review in this case renders a kind of warning: May the leaders of men in the future come to a better way of self-realization than give way to the internal conflict that pits father against son, and sister against brother. But if he must engage, at least understand the distinction between war and politics. Black s objective and concise account is a treasure for students and experts alike who need clarity and insight without too much of an investment. The take-away is an appreciation for the American spirit that civil strife petrified and an understanding of the tactical progression of this conflict and the context of combat of that era.Â

The Mammoth Book of the Vietnam War - Lewis Jon E.
By 1969, following the French defeat at Dien Bien Phu, over 500,000 US troops were â ˜in countryâ ™ in Vietnam. Before Americaâ ™s longest war had ended with the fall of Saigon in 1975, 450,000 Vietnamese had died, along with 36,000 Americans. It also saw the establishment of the Navy SEALs and Delta Force. At home, America fractured, with the peace movement protesting against the war; at Kent State University, Ohio National Guardsmen fired on unarmed students, killing four and injuring nine. Lewisâ ™s compelling selection of the best writing to come out of a war covered by some truly outstanding writers, both journalists and combatants, includes an eyewitness account of the first major battle between the US Army and the Peopleâ ™s Army of Vietnam at Ia Drang; a selection of letters home; Nicholas Tomalinâ ™s famous â ˜The General Goes Zapping Charlie Congâ ™; Robert Masonâ ™s â ˜R Râ ™, Studs Terkelâ ™s account of the police breaking up an anti-war protest; John Kifner on the shootings at Kent State; Ron Kovicâ ™s â ˜Born on the Fourth of Julyâ ™; John T. The Spanish Civil War - Helen Grahamová
This Very Short Introduction offers a powerfully-written explanation of the war s complex origins and course, and explores its impact on a personal and international scale. It also provides an ethical reflection on the war in the context of Europe s tumultuous twentieth century, highlighting why it has inspired some of the greatest writers of our time, and how it continues to resonate today in Britain, continental Europe, and beyond. Throughout the book, the focus is on the war as an arena of social change where ideas about culture were forged or resisted, and in which both Spaniards and non-Spaniards participated alike. These were conflicts that during the Second World War would stretch from Franco s regime, which envisaged itself as part of the Nazi new order, to Europe and beyond. Accordingly, this book examines Spanish participation in European resistance movements during World War II and also the ongoing civil war waged politically, economically, judicially and culturally inside Spain by Francoism after its military victory in 1939. History writing itself became a battleground and the book charts the Franco regime s attempt to appropriate the past. It also indicates its ultimate failure - as evident in new writings on the war and, above all, in the return of Republican memory now occurring in Spain during the opening years of the twenty-first century. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. The First World War - John Keegan
The definitive account of the Great War and a national bestseller from eminent military historian John Keegan2018 marks the centenary of the First World War â “ the war that created the modern world. It destroyed a century of relative peace and prosperity and saw a continent at the height of its success descend into slaughter. It unleashed both the demons of the twentieth century - political hatred, military destruction and mass death - and the ideas which continue to shape our world today: modernism in the arts, new approaches to psychology and medicine, and radical ideas about economics and society.By the end of the war, three great empires â “ the Austro-Hungarian, the Russian and the Ottoman â “ had collapsed. But as Keegan expertly shows, the devastation extended over the entirety over Europe and still profoundly informs the politics and culture of the continent today. Pertinent, authoritative and gripping, this panoramic account of WW1 is regarded as a world history classic. â ˜The best and most approachable introduction to the warâ ™ Guardianâ ˜Nobody describes a battle as Keegan does, vividly relating the unfolding events to the contours of the field of combat... The Pity of War - Niall Ferguson
The First World War killed around eight million men and bled Europe dry. In this provocative book Niall Ferguson asks: was the sacrifice worth it? Was it all really an inevitable cataclysm and were the Germans a genuine threat? Was the war, as is often asserted, greeted with popular enthusiasm? Why did men keep on fighting when conditions were so wretched? Was there in fact a death wish abroad, driving soldiers to their own destruction? The war, he argues, was a disaster - but not for the reasons we think. Far worse than a tragedy, it was the greatest error of modern history. The most challenging and provocative analysis of the First World War to date Ian Kershaw Must take a permanent place at the top of the War s historiography. Churchill and the Bomb in War and Cold War - Kevin Ruane
Covering the development of the atomic bomb during the Second World War, the origins and early course of the Cold War, and the advent of the hydrogen bomb in the early 1950s, Churchill and the Bomb explores a still neglected aspect of Winston Churchill s career â “ his relationship with and thinking on nuclear weapons. Kevin Ruane shows how Churchill went from regarding the bomb as a weapon of war in the struggle with Nazi Germany to viewing it as a weapon of communist containment (and even punishment) in the early Cold War before, in the 1950s, advocating and arguably pioneering what would become known as â œmutually assured destructionâ as the key to preventing the Cold War flaring into a calamitous nuclear war. While other studies of Churchill have touched on his evolving views on nuclear weapons, few historians have given this hugely important issue the kind of dedicated and sustained treatment it deserves. In Churchill and the Bomb, however, Kevin Ruane has undertaken extensive primary research in Britain, the United States and Europe, and accessed a wide array of secondary literature, in producing an immensely readable yet detailed, insightful and provocative account of Churchillâ ™s nuclear hopes and fears.

Poetic Writing and the Vietnam War in West Germany
In the 1960s and 1970s in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), or West Germany, newspaper readers and television viewers were appalled by terrible images of fires burning half a world away. The Vietnam War was a decisive catalyst for the era?s wider protest movements and gave rise to an ardent anti-war discourse. This discourse privileged writing in many forms. Within it, poetry and poetic writing were key; and because coverage of the conflict in Vietnam often focused on spectacular, destructive conflagrations ignited by hi-tech machines of war, their dominant trope was fire. Hundreds of poems and related writings about Vietnam circulated in the FRG, yet they are almost entirely forgotten today.Poetic Writing and the Vietnam War in West Germany uncovers and explores some of this rich production in order to present a new history of engaged poetic writing in the FRG in the 1960s and 1970s, and to draw out distinctive characteristics of wider protest culture. In doing so, it makes the case for attending to marginal, non-canonical or neglected literary and cultural forms, and for critical thinking about why they might, over time, have been obscured. This book offers, too, a case study for reflection on the representation of war, on ways in which German oppositional culture could imagine its others, and the ways in which other voices could speak to it in turn, and on the relationship of poetry to the historical world.Praise for Poetic Writing and the Vietnam War in West Germany The book?s strength lies in its broad approach that contextualises a historical nexus point and seeks to explain the meaning of ?Vietnam? for (West)Germany by exploring anti-war poetic responses by lesser-known German writers. Urgent, compelling reading from the author of Chernobyl on the defining conflict of our timesOn 24 February 2022, Russia stunned the world by launching an invasion of Ukraine. In the midst of checking on the family and friends who were now on the front lines of Europe s largest conflict since the outbreak of the Second World War, acclaimed Ukrainian-American historian Serhii Plokhy inevitably found himself attempting to understand the deeper causes of the invasion, analysing its course and contemplating the wider outcomes. The Russo-Ukrainian War is the comprehensive history of a war that has burned since 2014, and that, with Russia s attempt to seize Kyiv, exploded a geo-political order that had been cemented since the end of the Cold War. War in the Smartphone Age - Matthew Ford
An essential guide to understanding war and information on today s data-saturated battlefields--from Ukraine to Gaza and beyond. Thanks to smartphones, war is everywhere, all the time. Anyone can view, analyse and comment on photos, videos or other warzone media. Where did this technology come from? And what does it mean for the future of war? This book explains why you see what you do on your phone, and how these devices shape our knowledge, conduct and representation of war in the 2020s. It shows why smartphones are indispensable in peace and wartime: every device is a potential weapon, lines blur between war and daily life, and conflict becomes a shared digital experience. Social media platforms displace state-controlled narratives, amplifying violence and shaping war s legitimacy. Apps democratise conflict, enabling anyone to identify and attack perceived enemies. As the Ukraine war has shown, this new reality involves complex, unevenly distributed infrastructures, merging civilian communication with military targeting. With war accelerating beyond our comprehension, militaries have raced to benefit from and adapt to the smartphone age. Matthew Ford explores critical questions about today s hyper-connected battlefield.

The Hundred Years War - Emeritus Professor Anne Curry
An illustrated overview of the Hundred Years War, the longest-running and the most significant conflict in western Europe in the later Middle Ages. The Hundred Years War is of considerable interest both because of its duration and the number of theatres in which it was fought. Drawing on the latest research for this new edition, Hundred Years War expert Professor Anne Curry examines how the war can reveal much about the changing nature of warfare: the rise of infantry and the demise of the knight; the impact of increased use of gunpowder and the effect of the war on generations of people. Updated and revised for the new edition, with full-colour maps and 50 new images, this illustrated introduction provides an important reference resource for the academic or student reader as well as those with a general interest in late medieval warfare.

The Oxford History of the First World War
Histories you can trust. The First World War, now a century ago, still shapes the world in which we live, and its legacy lives on, in poetry, in prose, in collective memory and political culture. By the time the war ended in 1918, millions lay dead. Three major empires lay shattered by defeat, those of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottomans. A fourth, Russia, was in the throes of a revolution that helped define the rest of the twentieth century. The Oxford History of the First World War brings together in one volume many of the most distinguished historians of the conflict, in an account that matches the scale of the events. From its causes to its consequences, from the Western Front to the Eastern, from the strategy of the politicians to the tactics of the generals, they chart the course of the war and assess its profound political and human consequences. Chapters on economic mobilization, the impact on women, the role of propaganda, and the rise of socialism establish the wider context of the fighting at sea and in the air, and which ranged on land from the trenches of Flanders to the mountains of the Balkans and the deserts of the Middle East.

The Origins of the Second World War - Professor A J P Taylor
A.J.P. Taylor s bestselling The Origins of the Second World War overturns popular myths about the outbreak of war.One of the most popular and controversial historians of the twentieth century, who made his subject accessible to millions, A.J.P. Taylor caused a storm of outrage with this scandalous bestseller. Debunking what were accepted truths about the Second World War, he argued provocatively that Hitler did not set out to cause the war as part of an evil master plan, but blundered into it partly by accident, aided by the shortcomings of others.Fiercely attacked for vindicating Hitler, A.J.P. Taylor s stringent re-examination of the events preceding the Nazi invasion of Poland on 1st September 1939 opened up new debate, and is now recognized as a brilliant and classic piece of scholarly research. Taylor s most perfect work of art, a miracle of proportion, language and insight Robert Skidelsky A dazzling exercise in revisionism which summed up Taylor s paradoxical, provocative and inventive approach to history The Times Taylor was a lifelong dissenter ... at his best - as in The Origins of the Second World War ... he shifted the ground of major debates Ben Pimlott, Financial Times No historian of the past century has been more accessible Niall Ferguson, Sunday Telegraph An almost faultless masterpiece Observer Highly original and penetrating ... No one who has digested this enthralling work will ever be able to look at the period again in quite the same way Sunday TelegraphA.J.P. Taylor (1906-90) was one of the most controversial historians of the twentieth century. He served as a lecturer at the Universities of Manchester, Oxford, and London.

Paradise Afire: The Sri Lankan War - Adrien Fontanellaz
Details the intense Eelam War III (1995-2002) between the LTTE and Sri Lankan Navy, covering battles, tactics, and equipment. In April 1995, the LTTE resumed the war by launching a surprise attack against the Sri Lankan Navy at Trincomalee, thus opening the third phase – the so-called Eelam War III – of the decades-long Sri Lankan civil war. From 1995 to 2002, both sides battled mercilessly against each other, both on land and sea, where the LTTE naval wing, the infamous Sea Tigers, managed to keep at bay the Sri Lankan Navy in the country’s northern waters whilst securing the last leg of the maritime routes connecting the LTTE-held areas with the outside world. However, the war began with a crushing blow for the insurgents with their loss of the Jaffna Peninsula. Thereafter, the sides traded massive blows with in northern Sri Lanka, and each won spectacular victories and suffered massive defeats. In early 2000, the LTTE managed to stun the world by capturing the crucial Elephant Pass, despite it being held by a full Sri Lankan division, thus winning its greatest victory ever. However, by this stage, both sides were exhausted and a fresh round of negotiations ended with a new cease-fire on 22 February 2002.This volume provides a detailed overview not only of the series of large-scale battles and campaigns fought by the two enemies, but also of their organization, tactics and equipment.
