The Social Contract - Jean-Jacques Rousseau

''Man was born free, and he is everywhere in chains''These are the famous opening words of a treatise that has not ceased to stir debate since its publication in 1762. Rejecting the view that anyone has a natural right to wield authority over others, Rousseau argues instead for a pact, or ''social contract'', that should exist between all the citizens of a state and that should be the source of sovereign power. From this fundamental premise, he goes on to consider issues of liberty and law, freedom and justice, arriving at a view of society that has seemed to some a blueprint for totalitarianism, to others a declaration of democratic principles.Translated and Introduced by Maurice Cranston

The Essential Writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau - Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Translated by Peter ConstantineEdited and with a new introduction by Leo Damrosch''Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains'' is the dramatic opening line of The Social Contract, published in 1762. Quoted by politicians and philosophers alike, the power of this sentence continues to resonate. It laid the groundwork for both the American and French Revolutions, and is considered a foundational text in the development of the modern principles of human rights. Rousseau was an extraordinary visionary and a revolutionary thinker. The Essential Writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau collects his best and most indispensable work. The book includes: Discourse on the Origin and Foundations of Inequality Among Men and The Social Contract in full, plus selections from Émile, a treatise on education, the autobiographical Reveries of the Solitary Walker and Julie, or the New Héloïse,an epistolary novel.

The Confessions - Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Widely regarded as the first modern autobiography, The Confessions is an astonishing work of acute psychological insight. Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-78) argued passionately against the inequality he believed to be intrinsic to civilized society. In his Confessions he relives the first fifty-three years of his radical life with vivid immediacy - from his earliest years, where we can see the source of his belief in the innocence of childhood, through the development of his philosophical and political ideas, his struggle against the French authorities and exile from France following the publication of Émile. Depicting a life of adventure, persecution, paranoia, and brilliant achievement, The Confessions is a landmark work by one of the greatest thinkers of the Enlightenment, which was a direct influence upon the work of Proust, Goethe and Tolstoy among others.

A Discourse on Inequality - Jean-Jacques Rousseau

In A Discourse on Inequality Rousseau sets out to demonstrate how the growth of civilization corrupts man’s natural happiness and freedom by creating artificial inequalities of wealth, power and social privilege. Contending that primitive man was equal to his fellows, Rousseau believed that as societies become more sophisticated, the strongest and most intelligent members of the community gain an unnatural advantage over their weaker brethren, and that constitutions set up to rectify these imbalances through peace and justice in fact do nothing but perpetuate them. Rousseau’s political and social arguments in the Discourse were a hugely influential denunciation of the social conditions of his time and one of the most revolutionary documents of the eighteenth-century.

Rozprava o nerovnosti. O společenské smlouvě - Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Rozprava o původu a základech nerovnosti mezi lidmi (1755) tvoří spolu se Společenskou smlouvou (1762) jádro Rousseauovy politické teorie, která zásadním způsobem ovlivnila novověké politické myšlení a revoluce 18. století. Toto vydání přináší první úplný překlad Rozpravy o nerovnosti (včetně dosud česky neotištěných doprovodných textů) a po více než sedmdesáti letech i nový překlad Společenské smlouvy. Oba texty doplňuje bohatý komentář, který spisy zasazuje jak do kontextu autorova života a díla, tak do soudobého historického a politického kontextu, čímž umožňuje lépe pochopit originalitu Rousseauova myšlení a jeho význam pro současnost.

The Britannias - An Archipelago's Tale - Alice Albinia

A revelatory portrait of Britain through its islands, The Britannias weaves history, myth, and travelogue to rewrite the story of this “island nation.”From Neolithic Orkney, Viking Shetland, and Druidical Anglesey to the joys and strangeness of modern Thanet, The Britannias explores the farthest reaches of Britain’s island topography, once known by the collective term “Britanniae” (the Britains). This expansive journey demonstrates how the smaller islands have wielded disproportionate influence on the mainland, becoming the fertile ground of political, cultural, and technological innovations that shaped history throughout the archipelago. In an act of feminist inquiry, personal adventure, and literary quest, Alice Albinia embarks on a series of journeys that traverse Britain and reach beyond its contemporary borders―from Europe to the Caribbean, Ireland to Scandinavia. She walks the coastlines of Lindisfarne, sails through the Hebrides archipelago, and bikes into Westminster at dawn. As she takes us across extravagantly varied island topographies and surveys centuries of history, Albinia ranges between languages and genres, and through disparate island cultures. She talks to stubbornly independent islanders and searches for archaeological and linguistic traces of island identities, discovering distinct traditions and resistance to mainland control.Trespassing into the past to understand the present, The Britannias uncovers an enduring ... SHORTLISTED FOR THE EDWARD STANFORD TRAVEL BOOK OF THE YEAR''A dazzlingly brilliant book'' Hannah Dawson''Fascinating, often exhilarating ... Albinia is an intrepid, imaginative guide'' TLSThe Britannias tells the story of Britain''s islands and how they are woven into its collective cultural psyche. From Neolithic Orkney to modern-day Thanet, Alice Albinia explores the furthest reaches of Britain''s island topography, once known (wrote Pliny) by the collective term, Britanniae. Sailing over borders, between languages and genres, trespassing through the past to understand the present, this book knocks the centre out to foreground neglected epics and subversive voices. The ancient mythology of islands ruled by women winds through the literature of the British Isles - from Roman colonial-era reports, to early Irish poetry, Renaissance drama to Restoration utopias - transcending and subverting the most male-fixated of ages. The Britannias looks far back into the past for direction and solace, while searching for new meaning about women''s status in the body politic. Boldly upturning established truths about Britain, it pays homage to the islands'' beauty, independence and their suppressed or forgotten histories.

The Greatest of All Plagues - David Lay Williams

How the great political thinkers have persistently warned against the dangers of economic inequalityEconomic inequality is one of the most daunting challenges of our time, with public debate often turning to questions of whether it is an inevitable outcome of economic systems and what, if anything, can be done about it. But why, exactly, should inequality worry us? The Greatest of All Plagues demonstrates that this underlying question has been a central preoccupation of some of the most eminent political thinkers of the Western intellectual tradition. David Lay Williams shares bold new perspectives on the writings and ideas of Plato, Jesus, Thomas Hobbes, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Adam Smith, John Stuart Mill, and Karl Marx. He shows how they describe economic inequality as a source of political instability and a corrupter of character and soul, and how they view unchecked inequality as a threat to their most cherished values, such as justice, faith, civic harmony, peace, democracy, and freedom. Williams draws invaluable insights into the societal problems generated by what Plato called “the greatest of all plagues,” and examines the solutions employed through the centuries. The Prince - Niccoló Machiavelli

Napoleon, Mussolini, Voltaire, even Mafia man John Gotti – they all read Machiavelli’s The Prince. Philosophers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau, David Hume and Adam Smith were influenced by it. And the book’s ideas led to the term Machiavellian entering the language. But the influence of The Prince has reached far beyond the world of politics, with business and management gurus applying Machiavelli’s ideas to corporate strategy: what was true for princes then, can be applied by leaders today. Machiavelli himself was a Florentine politician and diplomat who admired and knew Cesare Borgia, and was himself a victim of torture by the Medici family. Written in the early 16th century, The Prince is a treatise is on how princes can not only best gain, but maintain power. He suggests how princes can avoid being hated but remain being feared by their people, he advocates pragmatic realism against political idealism, he encourages ambition, he defends evil and explains through classical and Renaissance examples which princes are the most successful. Of immense importance to politicians and corporate leaders, The Prince is a classic text richly deserving this exquisite edition. Landscapes of the Soul

Switzerland is home to illustrious soul-searchers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712–1778) and Carl Gustav Jung (1875–1961). The small country in the heart of Europe has a density of historic and current hotspots of psychiatry and psychoanalysis like hardly any other place in the world. From Geneva to Zurich, from Kreuzlingen, on the shore of the Lake Constance in the north, to Monte Verità near Ascona, close to the Italian border in the south, a dense network stretches across the map. Switzerland as a psycho-geographic space thus became a hub of psychoanalysis with a global reach.Coinciding with C.G. Jung''s 150th birthday, this book for the first time contextualises his thought and influence with the overall history of psychoanalysis in Switzerland. Besides Jung, its protagonists include, among other, Ludwig Binswanger, pioneer of existential psychology; Jean Piaget, best-known for his research of child development; Goldy and Paul Parin-Matthèy and Fritz Morgenthaler, co-founders of the Zurich School of Ethno-psychoanalysis; and Judith le Soldat with her radical feminist Nimbus theory.Twelve thematic essays by distinguished authors are supplemented and put into perspective by key historical texts and art works, as well as visual material and documents, many of them from archives that have so far been ... A Cultural History of Theatre in the Age of Enlightenment

French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau wrote, ‘the general effect of the theatre is to strengthen the national character to augment the national inclinations, and to give a new energy to all the passions’. During the Enlightenment, the advancement of radical ideas along with the emergence of the bourgeois class contributed to a renewed interest in theatre’s efficacy, informed by philosophy yet on behalf of politics. While the 18th century saw a growing desire to define the unique and specific features of a nation’s drama, and audiences demanded more realistic portrayals of humanity, theatre is also implicated in this age of revolutions. A Cultural History of Theatre in the Age of Enlightenment examines these intersections, informed by the writings of key 18th-century philosophers. Richly illustrated with 45 images, the ten chapters each take a different theme as their focus: institutional frameworks; social functions; sexuality and gender; the environment of theatre; circulation; interpretations; communities of production; repertoire and genres; technologies of performance; and knowledge transmission.

The Violins of Saint-Jacques - Patrick Leigh Fermor

On an Aegean island one summer, an English traveller meets an enigmatic elderly Frenchwoman. He is captivated by a painting she owns of a busy Caribbean port overlooked by a volcano and, in time, she shares the story of her youth there in the early twentieth century. Set in the tropical luxury of the island of Saint-Jacques, hers is a tale of romantic intrigue and decadence amongst the descendents of slaves and a fading French aristocracy. But on the night of the annual Mardi Gras ball, catastrophe overwhelms the island and the world she knew came to an abrupt and haunting end. The Violins of Saint-Jacques captures the unforeseen drama of forces beyond human control. Originally published in 1953, it was immediately hailed as a rare and exotic sweep of colour across the drab monochrome of the post-war years, and it has lost nothing of its original flavour.

The Gift of Death, Jacques Derrida’s most sustained consideration of religion, explores questions first introduced in his book Given Time about the limits of the rational and responsible that one reaches in granting or accepting death, whether by sacrifice, murder, execution, or suicide. Derrida analyzes Czech philosopher Jan Patocka’s Heretical Essays in the Philosophy of History and develops and compares his ideas to the works of Heidegger, Lévinas, and Kierkegaard. One of Derrida’s major works, The Gift of Death resonates with much of his earlier writing, and this highly anticipated second edition is greatly enhanced by David Wills’s updated translation. This new edition also features the first-ever English translation of Derrida’s Literature in Secret. In it, Derrida continues his discussion of the sacrifice of Isaac, which leads to bracing meditations on secrecy, forgiveness, literature, and democracy. He also offers a reading of Kafka’s Letter to His Father and uses the story of the flood in Genesis as an embarkation point for a consideration of divine sovereignty. “An important contribution to the critical study of ethics that commends itself to philosophers, social scientists, scholars of religion . . . On the Shores of Politics - Jacques Ranciére

It is frequently said that we are living through the end of politics, the end of social upheavals, the end of utopian folly. Consensual realism is the order of the day. But political realists, remarks Jacques Ranciere, are always several steps behind reality, and the only thing which may come to an end with their dominance is democracy. In these subtle and perceptive essays, Ranciere argues that since Plato and Aristotle politics has always constructed itself as the art of ending politics, that realism is itself utopian, and that what has succeeded the polemical forms of class struggle is not the wisdom of a new millennium but the return of old fears, criminality and chaos. Whether he is discussing the confrontation between Mitterrand and Chirac, French working-class discourse after the 1830 revolution, or the ideology of recent student mobilizations, his aim is to restore philosophy to politics and give politics back its original and necessary meaning: the organization of dissent.

The novel is informed by Genet''s memories of confinement, both in prison and the Mettray reformatory where he spent three years from the age of 15. The central figure of the novel is Harcamone, whom Genet first encountered at Mettray, and who resurfaces in an adult prison -- now a murderer and, in the world-turned-upside-down of Genet''s vision, a quasi-divine figure.Includes a new introduction by Terry Hands.

The Spiritual Roots of the Ecological Crisis - Jean-Claude Larchet

Many Christians are tempted to dismiss concerns over the environment and the catastrophic effects of climate change. After all, prominent voices who most vociferously warn us about this crisis tend to also advocate a wider worldview antithetical to Christian teachings. In this text, noted philosopher and scholar Jean-Claude Larchet finds the roots of the global ecological crisis in a rejection of a truly Christian cosmology. Explaining the relationship between man and nature ordained by God in the beginning, Larchet bases the degradation of the creation ultimately in the primordial fall and outlines how we have arrived at the present crisis point. Finally, the author proposes principles and actions deeply rooted in his Christian ethos that would allow mankind to restore and reinvigorate its relationship with nature.

The Santiago Pilgrimage - Jean-Christophe Rufin

"Whenever I was asked: ''Why did you go to Santiago?'', I had a hard time answering. How could I explain to those who had not done it that the way has the effect - if not the virtue - to make you forget all reasons that led you to become involved in it in the first place."Each year, tens of thousands of backpackers (Christian pilgrims and many others) set out from either their front doorstep or from popular starting points across Europe, to Santiago de Compostela. Most travel by foot, others ride a bicycle, and a few of them travel as did some of their medieval counterparts, on horseback or with a donkey. In addition to those who undertake a religious pilgrimage, the majority are hikers who walk the way for non-religious reasons: travel, sport, or simply the challenge of spending weeks walking in a foreign land. Also, many consider the experience as a spiritual adventure, with a view to removing themselves from the bustle of modern life. Jean-Christophe Rufin followed this "Northern Way" to Santiago de Compostela by foot, on over eight hundred kilometers. Much less crowded than the usual pilgrimage route, this one runs along the Basque and ... Unknown localization key: "more"

The Life of the Spider - Fabre Jean Henri

Our first reaction to the Spider may be one of revulsion or fear. To many of us, she is a distasteful creature destined to be crushed underfoot. But here in this book we meet the Spider as Fabre did-industrious builder, talented weaver, wily hunter, ill-fated mate. His observations, often surprising or amazing, on the lifecycle of the Spider are drawn from more than fifty years of studying and caring for them. Yes, the Spider is well worth studying.Jean-Henri Fabre is considered by many to be the father of modern entomology. He lived from 1823-1915, recording his research and reflections in the ten-volume work Souvenirs Entomologiques, from which the contents of The Life of the Spider have been compiled. The first volume of this set was written in 1879, he finished the tenth, and final, volume in 1909 when he was 86. The Life of the Spider was first published in 1912. Clement B. Davis added 16 full-page black and white drawings in 1919, which are included in this new and unabridged edition.

The Romance of the Rose - Guillaume de Lorris, Jean de Meun

`If any man or woman should ask what I wish this romance... to be called, it is the Romance of the Rose, in which the whole art of love is contained''. Guillaume de Lorris''s own introduction to his allegorical account of the progress of a courtly love affair gives no indication of the eventual scale and scope of the work, which became the most popular and influential of all medieval romances. In the hands of Jean de Meun, who continued de Lorris''s work, it assumed vast proportions and embraced almost every aspect of medieval life, from predestination to the right way to deal with premature hair-loss. This new translation into modern English, based on the French edition by Félix Lecoy, is intended as much for the general reader as for students of French and English literature. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World''s Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe.
