Nakreslil chlapečka na kole a dal mu jméno malý Mikuláš (podle reklamy na obchod s vínem Nicolas). Šéfredaktor ho propojil s Reném Goscinnym, aby společně udělali komiks. Vznikla série komiksových gagů, které byly v časopise uveřejňovány každý týden. O několik let později vyšla o Mikulášovi první kniha. Od roku 1953 Sempé pravidelně publikuje v několika zásadních francouzských novinách a časopisech, v roce 1978 se poprvé stane autorem obálky New Yorkeru.
