Anděl Esmeralda (The Angel Esmeralda, 2011) je ovšem DeLillova první sbírka povídek - a opět nikoli sbírka ledajaká: americká kritika i čtenářská obec se vesměs shodují, že se jedná o nejlepší autorovo dílo od přelomového románu Podsvětí (Underworld, 1997). Kniha nabízí průřez spisovatelovou tvorbou od konce sedmdesátých let do současnosti. V jistém smyslu přitom může sloužit jako úvod do DeLillova světa, najdeme v ní totiž většinu autorových erbovních témat: odcizení, paranoiu, obavu či přímo děs z přetechnizovaného, odlištěného světa, složitost lidské komunikace, neurčitý pocit ohrožení atd.
