The Ashtray - Errol Morris

Filmmaker Errol Morris offers his perspective on the world and his powerful belief in the necessity of truth. In 1972, philosopher of science Thomas Kuhn threw an ashtray at Errol Morris. This book is the result.  At the time, Morris was a graduate student. Now we know him as one of the most celebrated and restlessly probing filmmakers of our time, the creator of such classics of documentary investigation as The Thin Blue Line and The Fog of War. Kuhn, meanwhile, was—and, posthumously, remains—a star in his field, the author of The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, a landmark book that has sold well over a million copies and introduced the concept of “paradigm shifts” to the larger culture. And Morris thought the idea was bunk.  The Ashtray tells why—and in doing so, it makes a powerful case for Morris’s way of viewing the world, and the centrality to that view of a fundamental conception of the necessity of truth. “For me,” Morris writes, “truth is about the relationship between language and the world: a correspondence idea of truth.” He has no patience for philosophical systems that aim for internal coherence and disdain the world itself. Morris is after bigger game: he wants to establish as clearly as possible what we know and can say about the world, reality, history, our actions and interactions. It’s the fundamental desire that animates his filmmaking, whether he’s probing Robert McNamara about Vietnam or the oddball owner of a pet cemetery. Truth may be slippery, but that doesn’t mean we have to grease its path of escape through philosophical evasions. Rather, Morris argues powerfully, it is our duty to do everything we can to establish and support it.  In a time when truth feels ever more embattled, under siege from political lies and virtual lives alike, The Ashtray is a bracing reminder of its value, delivered by a figure who has, over decades, uniquely earned our trust through his commitment to truth. No Morris fan should miss it.

The Decorative Arts: Their Relation to Modern Life and Progress and The Manifesto of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings - Morris Will

William Morris is perhaps best known today for the beautiful textile designs he created under the banner of Morris & Co, which continue to decorate homes around the globe. As one of the leading lights of British socialism, however, he is less well known, and this series of Morris''s Manifestos seeks to highlight his extraordinary contribution to the literary canon on subjects socialist and artistic. The second in the Morris''s Manifestos series, The Decorative Arts is a passionate argument against the homogenisation of production, and a cry for art to make itself seen in design – ''art will make our streets as beautiful as the woods, as elevating as the mountainsides.''This edition also includes The Manifesto of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, the society founded by William Morris and his architect friend Philip Webb, which sought to oppose the ''destructive restoration'' that was going on in ancient buildings at the time.

A Year with the Seals - Alix Morris

'A tantalising glimpse of nature's capacity to heal' -- The Times 'Splendid, warm, and exhaustively researched' -- Sy Montgomery author of The Soul of an Octopus'Full of heart, zest, and honesty' -- Chantal Lyons, author of GroundbreakersFor readers of Jennifer Ackerman and Ed Yong, environmental journalist Alix Morris recounts the year she spent following seals, investigating their fascinating behaviour, the effects of their extraordinary return from near extinction, and how we can try to bring nature back into balance. It might be their large, strangely human eyes or their dog-like playfulness, but seals have long captured people's interest and affection, making them the perfect candidate for an environmental cause, as well as the subject of decades of study. Alix Morris spends a year with these magnetic creatures and brings them to life on the page, season by season, as she learns about their intelligence, their relationships with each other, their ecosystems, and the changing climate.Along with the enigmatic seals themselves, Morris gets to know all of the competing interests in the intense debate about the newly recovered seal populations in our coastal waters, from local fisherman whose catch is often diminished by savvy seals, to tribes who once relied on seal-hunting for food, clothing, and medicine, to seal rescue workers and biologists, to surfers and swimmers now encountering seal-hunting sharks in coastal waters. In a world where wildlife populations are disappearing at an alarming rate, A Year with the Seals is a rare look at what happens when conservation efforts actually work, and how human tampering with ecosystems continues to have unexpected consequences for a wide variety of species, humans included.

The Years of the Wizard - Rachel Morris

All things were believable back then – wizards, alchemy, fairies, angels. This is the story of those magical times.A lyrical and highly atmospheric exploration of the lives of Tudor and Renaissance magicians, men from Dee to Kepler to Bruno, who were also scientists, astrologers, mathematicians and alchemists. Their studies, books and ideas still permeate scientific history - as well as literature and film from Philip Pullman to CS Lewis, but what do we know of the rest of their households; the lovers, wives, mothers and daughters? In The Years of the Wizard, Rachel Morris also vividly reimagines the less documented lives of the magician''s families and lovers. From those who supported the travelling households - packing up the libraries, feeding the assistants, entertaining the patrons, educating the children - as well as those archiving, documenting and collaborating with their magical work. With vivid storytelling Rachel Morris magically animates both the known past lives of these extraordinary men and the imaginary stories of the less documented women, elders and children in this era of discovery and magic.

Return to the Sky - Tina Morris

“Three cheers for this splendid, surprising, inspiring book!”—Sy Montgomery, author of The Soul of an OctopusAlone in a vast wildlife refuge with little direction and no experience, an American ornithology student found herself responsible for a project of historical importance – to bring the mighty Bald Eagle back from the brink of extinction.Tina Morris was one of the first women to spearhead a raptor reintroduction program, and in Return to the Sky, she shares her remarkable story that is as much about the human spirit as it is about birds of prey.In the spring of 1975, on the eve of America’s Bicentennial, Tina was selected to reintroduce Bald Eagles into New York State in the hope that the species could eventually repopulate eastern North America. Young and female in a male-dominated field, Tina was handed an assignment to rehabilitate a population that had been devastated by the effects of DDT. The challenges were prodigious, and with no model to refer to, she spent two years playing ‘mother’ to seven eaglets at Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge in New York. Driven by her passion, she discovered unknown reserves of patience, determination and grit, and her own path to self-discovery and confidence-building was inextricably linked to the survival of the species she was chosen to protect. At a time when the mass extinction of bird species is a critical global topic, Return to the Sky reminds us how, with a mix of common sense, resilience and resolve, humans can be effective stewards of the natural world.

Dennis Morris

A career retrospective on one of the all-time great photographers of both music and black culture, Dennis Morris. When we think of the trailblazing photographer Dennis Morris’s work, music is right there. Morris’s adventures in the 1970s reggae and punk scene laid the groundwork for a six-decade career. It all began with Bob Marley: Morris doorstepped Marley in his early teens while skipping school and went on to capture much of Marley’s tour, which launched his career as a music photographer. He later became the official photographer for the Sex Pistols, and for John Lydon’s next project, Public Image Limited, Morris was art director and designer as well as taking iconic images for the band. He captured the greats of reggae and roots music, from Lee 'Scratch' Perry to Toots and Jimmy Cliff, forming friendships with many of the acts.Morris's documentary and street photography work, with roots in his experiences as a Black teenager in 1970s Britain, bring us visionary projects that explore race, politics and cultural identity. From the miner's strike to squat protests, from civil rights organizations to pop-up studio portraits, his work was a reckoning with his new home, capturing eccentricity and individual spirits with his camera. Edited by Laurie Hurwitz, this book unfolds in two electrifying parts: the first unravels Morris’s lens on race, culture and identity in 1970s Britain, while the second pulses with encounters with music legends like Patti Smith, Gregory Isaacs, The Stone Roses and Radiohead. With contributions from agnès B and Sean O’Hagan, the book will delight photography fans and music lovers alike. It includes previously unseen images, and is supported by an internationally touring exhibition, presenting Morris’s influential work in depth for the first time.

News from Nowhere - Morris William

''The only English utopia since More''s that deserves to be remembered as literature.''News from Nowhere (1890) is the best-known prose work of William Morris. The novel describes the encounter between a visitor from the nineteenth century, William Guest, and a decentralized and humane socialist future. Set over a century after a revolutionary upheaval in 1952, these ''Chapters from a Utopian Romance'' recount his journey across London and up the Thames to Kelmscott Manor, Morris''s own country house in Oxfordshire. Drawing on the work of John Ruskin and Karl Marx, Morris''s book is not only an evocative statement of his egalitarian convictions but also a distinctive contribution to the utopian tradition. Morris''s rejection of state socialism and his ambition to transform the relationship between humankind and the natural world, giveNews from Nowhere a particular resonance for modern readers. The text is based on that of 1891, incorporating the extensive revisions made by Morris to the first edition.ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World''s Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. News from Nowhere - Morris William

The famous novel News from Nowhere (1890), written by socialist pioneer and artist William Morris, combines utopian socialism and soft science fiction. Starting on January 11, 1890, it was first serialized in the Commonweal newspaper. In the story, William Guest, the narrator, falls asleep on the way home from a Socialist League meeting and wakes up in a world where the means of production are owned by everyone and democratically controlled. This society lacks private property, large cities, authority, a monetary system, marriage and divorce, courts, jails, and class structures. The only reason this agrarian culture is able to function is that people enjoy being in nature and consequently enjoy what they do. The structure of this civilization as well as the interpersonal interactions it fosters are some of the topics covered in the book. When Morris presents himself as an enchanted character in a period and place other than Victorian England, he combines Marxism and the romance genre. Morris, the romance character, runs into romance archetypes dressed in Marxist garb as he searches for love and camaraderie and, through them, a reborn self. Old Hammond is the sage of romance as well as the communist teacher who introduces the modern world to Morris.

Be it ever so grand or ever so humble, a castle was first and foremost a home.To understand castles – who built them, who lived in them, and why – is to understand the forces that shaped medieval Britain.

The Nature of Gothic - John Ruskin

''One of the very few necessary and inevitable utterances of the century.'' William Morris, in the Preface. The Nature of Gothic started life as a chapter in Ruskin''s masterwork, The Stones of Venice. Ruskin came to lament the ''Frankenstein monsters'' of Victorian buildings with added Gothic which ''The Stones'' inspired; but despite his misgivings the original moral purpose of his writing had not fallen on stony ground. The Nature of Gothic, the last chapter of the second volume, had marked his progression from art critic to social critic; in it he found the true seam of his thought, and it was quickly recognised for the revolutionary writing it was. As Morris himself put it, The Nature of Gothic ''pointed out a new road on which the world should travel''; and in its indictment of meaningless modern labour and its celebration of medieval architecture it could be called the foundation stone of Morris''s aesthetic and purpose in life. 40 years after he first read it, Morris chose Ruskin''s text for one of the first books to be published at his Kelmscott Press, using his own Golden type. It is one of the summits of his career, and one of the most beautiful books ever published.Few books can so completely sum up an era. The Kelmscott Nature of Gothic encapsulates the meeting of two remarkable minds and embodies their influence in word, image and design. But more than that, Ruskin''s words are increasingly relevant for our times. In this facsimile edition, the first ever made of this rare book, the reader can fully appreciate their importance and their legacy, as understood by one of the most potent visual imaginations to have worked in Britain. In this enlarged edition, essays by leading scholars, Robert Hewison (who was one of Ruskin''s successors as Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford University), Tony Pinkney (Senior Lecturer at Lancaster University) and Robert Brownell (lecturer, stained glass maker and author of Marriage of Inconvenience) explain the importance of this book for Ruskin, for Morris and for us today.

Cars We Loved in the 1970s - Giles Chapman

The 1970s saw some ground-breaking new metal in British showrooms: the Renault 5 established the new ‘supermini’ class, the Volkswagen Golf gave the average family car a hatchback and top quality, the Ford Capri made sporty cars available to everyone and, despite all of this, that old favourite the Ford Cortina continued to rule the sales charts. It was a funny old time to be a driver, and Britain started to experience a love/hate relationship with the four-wheeled machine that previously symbolised nothing but speed and freedom. The economic rollercoaster sent fuel prices soaring, while the country’s roads left something to be desire, and then there was the issue of those cars themselves: it seemed British manufacturers, beset by striking workers and falling quality standards, were stalling as Japan’s Datsuns and Toyotas cruised off with contented customers. Giles Chapman documents the whole turbulent decade stunningly illustrated book, from the cars that dominated our motoring lives to the much-maligned Morris Marina and Reliant Robin actually helped drivers out of a jam.

From these experiences he was led to Toltec spiritual teacher don Miguel Ruiz and began a deep spiritual journey of change.Sharing his journey from PTSD to spiritual awakening, Morris recounts his time as a civil rights advocate for the Montagnard people in Vietnam and his years as a war correspondent at the same time he was following Castaneda’s Warrior’s Way. He describes his momentous meeting with don Miguel Ruiz as well as his travels around the world and in the astral realms. Sharing how his wife developed dementia and later became paralyzed, Morris explains how it required all his Toltec training, all his military training, everything he had to share her final years in a meaningful and fulfilling way. Written from a deep understanding of Toltec techniques this book shows in a heartfelt and resonant way what a spiritual path can give you.

Tulips and Peacocks: William Morris and Art from the Islamic World - Rowan Bain

An introduction to William Morris’s personal collection of artworks from the Islamic world and how they came to influence his pattern-making  One of the principal founders of the Arts and Crafts movement, William Morris was responsible for hundreds of patterns for wallpapers, fabrics, tapestries, and carpets that are iconic of the late nineteenth century and continue to resonate today. It is now widely acknowledged that his artistic production was stimulated by his deep familiarity with embroideries, woven velvets, silks, carpets, and metalwork from Iran, Syria, and Turkey, which he collected throughout his lifetime.  Ranging from popular nineteenth-century tourist merchandise to rare artefacts of historical significance, Morris’s collection is a testament to the interconnectedness of global artistic traditions and the enduring importance of recognising the contributions of various cultures to the evolution of his design and craftsmanship. This highly illustrated publication offers diverse perspectives in contextualising Morris’s role within contemporary debates around colonial collecting, Islam’s representation in the museum context, and issues of cultural appropriation from contributors within the field of British Arts and Crafts and Art from the Islamic world.

The Venetian Empire - Jan Morris

For six centuries the Republic of Venice was a maritime empire, its sovereign power extending throughout much of the eastern Mediterranean – an empire of coasts, islands and isolated fortresses by which, as Wordsworth wrote, the mercantile Venetians ''held the gorgeous east in fee''. Jan Morris reconstructs the whole of this glittering dominion in the form of a sea-voyage, travelling along the historic Venetian trade routes from Venice itself to Greece, Crete and Cyprus. It is a traveller''s book, geographically arranged but wandering at will from the past to the present, evoking not only contemporary landscapes and sensations but also the characters, the emotions and the tumultuous events of the past. The first such work ever written about the Venetian ‘Stato da Mar’, it is an invaluable historical companion for visitors to Venice itself and for travellers through the lands the Doges once ruled.
