Strach je podle Drewermanna každému jedinci vštěpován na samém počátku jeho individuálního života. Je to strach z porušení desatera a jeho výkladů, strach z toho, že člověk bude vyloučen z komunity a bude muset žít sám. Církvi se podařilo vytvořit obecně platnou konvenci, že ďábel je analogií zla, čemuž je potřeba se vyhnout, obávat se, mít strach. V souladu s automatickým přijetím této teorie pak atmosféru strachu jako jistého výchovného rituálu lze snadno obecně zneužívat, což v důsledku může vést k různým neurotickým a psychotickým onemocněním, upozorňuje Drewermann a odkazuje na svou praxi psychoterapeuta. Teolog, psycholog, filosof a spisovatel Eugen Drewermann v knize (text je koncipovan jako rozhovor novináře J. D. Eugen Drewermann byl profesorem katolické dogmatické teologie v Paderbornu. V tomtéž roce byl pak i suspendován z kněžského úřadu. Roku 2005 Drewermann oznámil, že vystupuje z katolické církve. Drewermann je v Německu považován za jednoho z významných myslitelů a nemnoha zbývajících univerzálních vzdělanců.
