Testament of Memory - Mikhail Chevalkov

“My children! I am giving you these writings of mine describing my life as a testament that you may work harder for God than I worked for Him...” The author, a native Altai tribesman, Father Mikhail Chevalkov, was a man of great moral courage and integrity. He was one of the first native disciples of the Russian Orthodox missionary priest Makarii (Glukharev), glorified as a saint in 2000 AD.  In this simple yet profound narrative, the reader travels with Chevalkov, through his life as we learn of his conversion, his struggle for literacy, the care shown to his family, and his numerous encounters with pagan tribes. Chevalkov created the written Altai language as he translated church service books and religious songs, as well as allegorical poems, parables and maxims. This memoir will enrapture the reader with its directness and beauty whilst also providing invaluable insights for students of Christian mission, ethnography, and geography.

Testament of Friendship - Vera Brittain

WRITTEN WITH A NEW INTRODUCTION BY MARK BOSTRIDGE In her bestselling first volume of autobiography, Testament of Youth, Vera Brittain passionately recorded the agonising years of the First World War, lamenting the destruction of a generation which for her included those she most dearly loved - her lover, her brother and her closest friends. In Testament of Friendship Brittain tells the story of the woman who helped her survive those tragic years - the writer Winifred Holtby. They met at Somerville College, Oxford, immediately after the war. Their friendship continued through Vera''s marriage and their separate but parallel writing careers until Winifred''s untimely death at the age of thirty-seven. When she died, her fame as a writer was about to reach its peak with the publication of her greatest novel, South Riding. A moving record of a friendship between two women of courage, determination and intelligence and a wonderful portrait of a lifelong love. Testament of Friendship now takes its rightful place as a Virago Modern Classic.

Testament of Lost Youth - Kathryn Ecclestone

Vera Brittain is one of the twentieth century’s most significant feminist and pacifist figures. Her 1933 best-selling First World War memoir, Testament of Youth, is acclaimed as one of the most important autobiographies of the last hundred years. Testament of Lost Youth is the first book to examine Vera’s cossetted middle-class upbringing in once-fashionable Buxton, between 1905 and 1915. She condemned her ''provincial young ladyhood'' with remorseless fervour, but were her criticisms justified, or is there a more complex, nuanced story?Drawing on Vera''s own diary, letters, and a wealth of historical sources, Kathryn Ecclestone uncovers the hidden layers of Vera''s privileged early life. Her book challenges traditional portrayals to shed new light on the unique social atmosphere of Edwardian Buxton, Vera''s schooling and experience of university, her family, social and love life, before a harrowing journey through the First World War, where she lost her fiancé, adored brother and many friends and acquaintances. From her intellectual awakening to her battles against societal constraints, this book, filled with images of Vera and her family, presents a nuanced exploration of a remarkable woman, revealing how her early life shaped and inspired the icon the world came to know.

The Psychology of Memory - Althea Need Kaminske, Megan Sumeracki

How can I improve my memory? Do my emotions affect my memories? How will my memory change as I get older? The Psychology of Memory provides a unique insight into a fundamental part of being human, debunking many common misconceptions about what memory is, how memory works, and the accuracy of our memories. It explores the complexity of human memory, looking at how we remember different types of information and the impact of issues like ageing and emotion on how we create, store, and retrieve memories. Extremes of memory from so-called photographic memory to dementia are discussed, along with ways our memory can impact our everyday lives in educational and legal settings.Treating memory as malleable, dynamic, and active, The Psychology of Memory teaches us about how our individual memories function, and how we can harness this to see memory in a new way; to use the past, our experiences and information, in service of the present and future.

The Testament of Gideon Mack - James Robertson

The Testament of Gideon Mack is James Robertson's acclaimed novel exploring faith and belief. For Gideon Mack, faithless minister, unfaithful husband and troubled soul, the existence of God, let alone the Devil, is no more credible than that of ghosts or fairies. Until the day he falls into a gorge and is rescued by someone who might just be Satan himself.Mack's testament - a compelling blend of memoir, legend, history, and, quite probably, madness - recounts one man's emotional crisis, disappearance, resurrection and death. It also transports you into an utterly mesmerising exploration of the very nature of belief.

Continuity and Discontinuities of Religious Memory in the Czech Republic - Dušan Lužný, Jan Váně, František Kalvas, Veronika Hásová

This publication has several modest goals: We shall describe how we conceptualised religious memory for the purposes of qualitative and quantitative survey research, and we shall explain how we operationalised religious communicative and cultural memory and why we believe that the questionnaire we designed and present here can also be applied in other contexts outside Czech society. Given the volume of data we obtained, we want to present at least a portion of our results and show what types of findings were achieved through our conceptualisation and operationalisation of religious memory. Finally, we want to present non-Czech-speaking readers with a comprehensive work describing changes in religiosity in Czech society, in this case from the perspective of memory studies. In other words, we want to offer an international audience a piece of work broader than just a journal article focusing on the study of religion in the Czech Republic.

The Art of Memory - Frances Yatesová

This unique and brilliant book is a history of human knowledge. Before the invention of printing, a trained memory was of vital importance. Based on a technique of impressing ''places'' and ''images'' on the mind, the ancient Greeks created an elaborate memory system which in turn was inherited by the Romans and passed into the European tradition, to be revived, in occult form, during the Renaissance.Frances Yates sheds light on Dante’s Divine Comedy, the form of the Shakespearian theatre and the history of ancient architecture; The Art of Memory is an invaluable contribution to aesthetics and psychology, and to the history of philosophy, of science and of literature.

The Site of Memory - Toni Morrisonová

The Site of Memory describes Toni Morrison’s work of literary archaeology. She offers insights into how she arrives at a text through the act of imagination, which is bound up with memory. Showing how she explores two worlds, the actual and the possible, she follows the journey of an image from picture to meaning to text via the nimbus of emotion surrounding it.Exploring the radical possibilities of literature and the limits of history, Morrison finds a truth deeper than documentation in the silences and omissions in African American narratives of the past. Fiction, for Morrison, is a practice of ethical restoration: a means to recover what history has neglected through the ‘flooding’ of a rush of imagination. In The Site of Memory, ancestral presence, emotion and imagination converge. If writing is thinking and discovery and selection and order and meaning, it is also awe and reverence and mystery and magic.

Each time we revisit even our most deeply ingrained memories, they can soften and consolidate, distorted. Yet they also carry within them the blueprint of each person's unique style. From episodic memories like shining islands in dark water, and forgotten memories that underpin our personalities, to the memories authored by others that we carry within us, Rowlands explores our negotiations with the past and how memory makes us who we are. Drawing on the latest neurological and psychological research and on a range of writers and thinkers, The Book of Memory is a mesmerising journey into how memories are made, lost and remembered, with important consequences for how we understand ourselves.

Loss of Memory Is Only Temporary - Johanna Kaplan

A funny, fresh, and brilliantly insightful collection of stories from a beloved writer, with a new introduction by Francine ProseJohanna Kaplan’s beautifully written stories first burst on the literary scene in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Today they have retained all of their depth, surprise, and humor—their simultaneously scathing, hilarious, and compassionate insight into character and behavior. From Miriam, home from school with the measles, to Louise, the daughter of a family that fled Vienna for the Dominican Republic, to Naomi, a young psychiatrist, her heroines are fierce, tender, funny, and cuttingly smart. At once specific to a particular period, place, and milieu—mainly, Jewish New York in the decades after World War II—Kaplan’s stories resonate with universal significance. In this new collection, which includes both early and later stories, unforgettably vivid characters are captured in all of their forceful presence and singularity, their foolishness and their wisdom, their venality and their nobility, while, hovering in the background, the inexorable passage of time and the unending pull of memory render silent judgment. In its pitch-perfect command of dialogue matched with interwoven subtleties of insight and feeling and a masterful control of language, Loss of Memory Is Only Temporary is itself a timeless ... The Colour of Memory - Geoff Dyer

''In the race to be first in describing the lost generation of the 1980s, Geoff Dyer in The Colour of Memory leads past the winning post. ''We''re not lost,'' one of his hero''s friend''s says, ''we''re virtually extinct''. It is a small world in Brixton that Dyer commemorates, of council flat and instant wasteland, of living on the dole and the scrounge, of mugging, which is merely begging by force, and of listening to Callas and Coltrane. It is the nostalgia of the DHSS Bohemians, the children of unsocial security, in an urban landscape of debris and wreckage. Not since Colin MacInnes''s City of Spades and Absolute Beginners thirty years ago has a novel stuck a flick-knife so accurately into the young and marginal city. A low-keyed style and laconic wit touch up The Colour of Memory.'' The Times

Jimi Jones and Marek Jancovic document the development and adoption of JPEG 2000, FFV1, MXF, and Matroska while investigating the social and material aspects of their design and the forces driving their journeys from niche to ubiquity. Drawing on interviews with archivists and developers, Jones and Jancovic reveal the archive as a dynamic space where deeply entrenched social practices produce disagreements but also resourceful collaborations. They contrast the unprecedented rise of archivist-driven standardization and controversies around non-standard technology with the historical dominance of the film and broadcast industries. Throughout, the authors clarify the role of tech companies, software developers, film pirates, hackers, and other players with poorly understood roles in the process. MEMORY - Dorothea Lasky

Dorothea Lasky’s Memory is a cycle of ‘poet’s essays’ stirred by two profound questions. What constitutes personhood and consciousness? What memories get lost, and why?Lasky’s inspired investigation of the forces that form our lives and deepest senses of ourselves ranges across three dimensions of memory: ancestral, personal and poetic. In her singularly clear voice, she enters into their mysteries to return with an expansive collection of essays that traverse the universal and the particular. Memory reflects on the everyday and the emotional, history, trauma and charged sites of collective reminiscence, such as the moon landing. Other pieces address the other side of memory: her father’s experience of Alzheimer’s, asking what’s left where memory is absent, and what’s ‘real’ beyond the horizon of death. The book closes with ‘Time, the Rose, and the Moon’, an ars poetica exploring the ancient symbol of the Ouroboros as a figure for the nonlinear processes of time, memory and art. In tribute to Bernadette Mayer’s Memory, Lasky reveals memory to be huge and haunting, as she accumulates impressions that challenge the very possibility of fixed meaning.

Intersections in Basic and Applied Memory Research

In recent years there has been increasing interaction between basic and applied memory researchers, ranging from heated debates to highly productive collaborations. This collection of papers -- based on presentations at the Third Practical Aspects of Memory conference -- reviews the progress, as well as obstacles to progress, in the ongoing collaboration between basic and applied memory researchers. This volume represents the state of the art in memory research domains that straddle the basic-applied divide. The text is organized around three themes, including theoretical and metatheoretical issues concerning the interaction of basic and applied memory research, laboratory investigation of real world memory problems, and solutions of everyday problems using theoretical concepts derived from basic memory research. The first section illustrates why collaboration between basic and applied memory researchers should be beneficial and provides guidelines for avoiding some of the pitfalls. The second and third sections present some of the most significant, contemporary findings by researchers whose work is basic-yet-applicable or applied-yet-theoretically-based. Students and professional memory researchers will find the substantive results to be provocative and theoretically engaging, making the information presented in this volume invaluable. These examples of successful application will be of substantial, pragmatic value and researchers are certain ... Unknown localization key: "more"

Memory Lane - Ciara Greene, Gillian Murphy

An illuminating look at the adaptive nature of our memories—and how their flexibility and fallibility help us survive and thriveWe tend to think of our memories as impressions of the past that remain fully intact, preserved somewhere inside our brains. In fact, we construct and reconstruct our memories every time we attempt to recall them. Memory Lane introduces readers to the cutting-edge science of human memory, revealing how our recollections of the past are constantly adapting and changing, and why a faulty memory isn’t always a bad thing. Shedding light on what memory is and what it evolved to do, Ciara Greene and Gillian Murphy discuss the many benefits of our flexible yet fallible memory system, including helping us to maintain a coherent identity, sustain social bonds, and vividly imagine possible futures. But these flexible and easily distorted memories can also result in significant harm, leading us to provide erroneous eyewitness testimony or fall victim to fake news. Greene and Murphy explain why our flawed memories are not a failure of evolution but rather a byproduct of the perfectly imperfect way our minds have evolved to solve problems. They also grapple with important ethical questions surrounding the study and manipulation ... Unknown localization key: "more"

On Collective Memory - Maurice Halbwachs

How do we use our mental images of the present to reconstruct our past? Maurice Halbwachs (1877-1945) addressed this question for the first time in his work on collective memory, which established him as a major figure in the history of sociology. This volume, the first comprehensive English-language translation of Halbwach's writings on the social construction of memory, fills a major gap in the literature on the sociology of knowledge. Halbwachs' primary thesis is that human memory can only function within a collective context. Collective memory, Halbwachs asserts, is always selective; various groups of people have different collective memories, which in turn give rise to different modes of behavior. Halbwachs shows, for example, how pilgrims to the Holy Land over the centuries evoked very different images of the events of Jesus' life; how wealthy old families in France have a memory of the past that diverges sharply from that of the nouveaux riches; and how working class construction of reality differ from those of their middle-class counterparts. With a detailed introduction by Lewis A. Coser, this translation will be an indispensable source for new research in historical sociology and cultural memory. Lewis A. Navigating Cultural Memory - David Mwambari

Navigating Cultural Memory examines how a master narrative of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi evolved into a hegemonic narrative both in Rwanda and globally. Identifying key actors who shaped and responded to the evolution and enforcement of the master narrative in the first two decades after the genocide and civil war ended, it engages with important questions about collective memory, trauma, and power following violent and divisive events. With chapters analyzing interviews the author collected, as well as other secondary sources, Mwambari charts how Rwandans from different backgrounds--who he identifies as Champions, Antagonists, and Fatalists of the master narrative--have responded to this event through language, physical symbols of memory, art, and traditional and new media. Mwambari argues that a relational approach to dignity can help transform polarizing narratives away from sources of competition, exclusion, and silence, and towards healing. Conversations about the politics around the master narrative and about the collective presentation of violent histories are not only important for contemporary politics but the key to Rwanda''s present and future peace. By exploring these contradictions in memories between actors in Rwanda and abroad, Navigating Cultural Memory offers crucial insights into the complexities surrounding individual and collective memory in societies ... Assassins of Memory - Henry A. Giroux

In this book, Henry A. Giroux addresses the attacks on student protesters speaking up against the war on Gaza, and connects this with wider attacks on critical education and democracy. He details the ongoing scholasticide taking place in Palestine, the systematic attacks by the Israeli military on schools, teachers and museums, and argues that they represent the extreme endpoint of a broader, insidious campaign aimed at crushing dissent across universities in the United States, Europe, and beyond. Books are banned, student protesters face police brutality, faculty are purged, history is whitewashed, and faculty are restricted from teaching certain content in the classroom. Throughout the book he draws links between authoritarianism and education, the war on youth, the politics of higher education, the politics of mass media, as well as what he has termed “organized forgetting”. He closes the book by arguing that we live in an era where historical amnesia has been weaponized, where many young people are denied the histories that allow them to narrate their own experiences and assert modes of self-reflection they can claim as their own.

Memory for Everyday and Emotional Events

The nature of memory for everyday events, and the contexts that can affect it, are controversial topics being investigated by researchers in cognitive, social, clinical, and developmental/lifespan psychology today. This book brings many of these researchers together in an attempt to unpack the contextual and processing variables that play a part in everyday memory, particularly for emotion-laden events. They discuss the mental structures and processes that operate in the formation of memory representations and their later retrieval and interpretation.
