Summer to Summer, Looking - Gill McEvoy
Gill McEvoy is a poet who moves through the world with all her senses open. The quality of attention here is profound and pays off in an elegance of phrase and originality of image that makes these poems sing off the page. There is often a playfulness at work in the linguistic dexterity of these pieces, as the poet engages in a car chase with the moon or the flora, fauna and meteorology of October are presented as a weather forecast. There is a connection to land here that is lived and authentic, it is never sentimental, but it brims with hope and generosity even in those moments when we know ‘the longed-for vision’ might never appear.

''A beautiful, bracing gem of a book, quite unlike any other family memoir I’ve ever read'' Polly Morland, author of A FORTUNATE WOMAN''(A) profoundly moving memoir . . . I will not be the only sibling to appreciate Looking After. Our voices are seldom heard’ Spectator''Beautifully written, erudite and important . . . Looking After is a love letter to an autistic brother and to family itself, and a reminder of the power of empathy to save lives'' Christie Watson, author of THE LANGUAGE OF KINDNESS‘This loving memoir explores the everyday reality of living with the condition . . . Sometimes an "ordinary" story is anything but . . . Looking After is never dry - Lionel’s glorious, messy, infuriating humanity comes first. [Elton] wants to honour and celebrate her chicken-chomping, toiletry-slathering, transport-fixated brother and the mother who made his life possible’ The Times''Held me captive to the very last page. Wise, compassionate and compellingly told'' Monica Ali, author of LOVE MARRIAGE''This life-spanning memoir is an affecting and affectionate tribute'' Bookseller, Editor''s ChoiceMeet Lionel, Caroline’s older brother. Born in the late 1940s, when little was known about autism, Lionel was considered a peculiarity. From the beginning, he was a silent child, oblivious to the people around him and intent only on playing with his toy trucks. By the time he turned four, doctors declared him ineducable and advised that he be institutionalised – a shockingly standard practise at the time.No one could have predicted that Lionel would go onto music college and find his place in the world. With the help of his mother – who refused to send him away – Lionel lived a life that was certainly unusual but never dull. He had perfect pitch, could multiply three-figure numbers in his head, or work out which day of the week you were born on, the instant you told him your birthday. But when Lionel’s mother dies, and shortly after he is diagnosed with cancer, his two sisters struggle to fill the void – to become Lionel’s caretaker and support him as they had promised their mother. Looking After is both a portrait of one autistic man''s remarkable life, and a heart-rending story of how one family learnt to care for each other, to deal with loss and to be by each other’s side at the very end.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass - Lewis Carroll
The Penguin English Library Edition of Alice''s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll''"Curiouser and curiouser!" cried Alice (she was so surprised, that for the moment she quite forgot how to speak good English). "Now I''m opening out like the largest telescope that ever was! Goodbye, feet!"''''I had sent my heroine straight down a rabbit-hole ... without the least idea what was to happen afterwards,'' wrote Lewis Carroll, describing how Alice was conjured up one ''golden afternoon'' in 1862 to entertain his child-friend Alice Liddell. His dream worlds of nonsensical Wonderland and the back-to-front Looking Glass kingdom depict order turned upside-down: a baby turns into a pig, time is abandoned at a disorderly tea-party and a chaotic game of chess makes a seven-year-old girl a Queen. But amongst the anarchic humour and sparkling word play, puzzles and riddles, are poignant moments of nostalgia for lost childhood. The Penguin English Library - 100 editions of the best fiction in English, from the eighteenth century and the very first novels to the beginning of the First World War.

From Seed to Bloom - Milli Proust
Milli Proust is inspired by the way plants grow in the wild, and she loves working with what she grows, creating romantic and playful designs for weddings, events, brands and personal clients. All of her crops are all grown in rhythm with nature, and are completely chemical-free in a passionate effort to protect our surrounding wildlife. In January 2017, she made the move from London, where she was born and raised, to a deeply rural pocket of West Sussex. It may be only an hour back to the city by train, but it often feels so much further away than that. She fell in love with her pocket of countryside, deep in the woods, growing as much beauty as she could. In the few years of making this her home, she has learnt to see the seasons change, not just from winter to spring, from spring to summer, but from week to week, each and every day bringing new promise, change and subtle shift. When she is not tending to the crops or creating and installing floral work, she works as an actress for radio, stage, and television.

Track: A (Female) Student's Guide to Purity in a Porn-Saturated Culture - Helen Thorne–Allenson
Director of Training and Resources for Biblical Counselling UK, Helen Thorne–Allenson gives us this essential guide for young women to what the Bible says about pornography. We live in a world where pornography is easy to access. At the click of a button, it tempts us to use our devices and bodies to get a cheap hit of excitement, devoid of any real human interaction or care. But God calls us to a life which is the opposite of that. Helen Thorne–Allenson shares not only a convincing explanation as to why looking at porn is unhelpful but also some practical tips for breaking the habit. Contents:Section 1: Understanding PornPurposeValueSection 2: Understanding Why We Use PornCuriosityComfortControlSection 3: Pursuing ChristStrategiesHopeCommunityBeautyEach chapter ends with questions for reflection and discussion, and there is a list of helpful resources at the back of the book. This book contains no graphic detail about the contents of porn. There is no manipulating you to feel guilty for decisions you may have made in the past. And there is no pretending that living for Jesus is always easy. There is, however, an honest look at who we are, what pornography is, why we are here, and how God is calling us to live – and an invitation to follow him into a future that is beautiful beyond compare. Track is a series of books designed to disciple the next generation in the areas of culture, doctrine, and the Christian life. While the topics addressed aren’t always simple, they are communicated in a manner that is. With the intention of the content being absorbed, examined and applied, each chapter includes a summary of the main point, and reflection questions that can be used individually, in one-to-one mentoring or in a group setting.Â

Comprising fifty-two short prose pieces, Letters to a Young Writer ranges from practical matters of authorship, such as finding an agent, the pros and cons of creative writing degrees and handling bad reviews, through to the more joyous and celebratory, as McCann elucidates the pleasures to be found in truthful writing, for: ‘the best writing makes us glad that we are – however briefly – alive.’ Emphatic and empathetic, pragmatic and profound, this is an essential companion to any author’s journey – and a deeply personal work from one of our greatest literary voices.

Introducing Quantum Theory - Oscar Zarate, Joseph McEvoy
Quantum theory confronts us with bizarre paradoxes which contradict the logic of classical physics. At the subatomic level, one particle seems to know what the others are doing, and according to Heisenberg’s “uncertainty principle”, there is a limit on how accurately nature can be observed. And yet the theory is amazingly accurate and widely applied, explaining all of chemistry and most of physics. “Introducing Quantum Theory” takes us on a step-by-step tour with the key figures, including Planck, Einstein, Bohr, Heisenberg and Schrodinger. Each contributed at least one crucial concept to the theory. The puzzle of the wave-particle duality is here, along with descriptions of the two questions raised against Bohr’s “Copenhagen Interpretation” – the famous “dead and alive cat” and the EPR paradox. Both remain unresolved. J.P. McEvoy is a former research scientist and now a science journalist. Oscar Zarate is a highly acclaimed graphic artist who has illustrated many Introducing titles. His prize-winning graphic novel A Small Killing is known throughout the world.

Now I''ll know what book to recommend when people ask me to help them on their journey towards minimalism!'' Garance Doré, author of Love Style LifeElevate your personal style, trim your belongings, and transform your life, one room at a time, with this visionary lifestyle and home organisation book from organising expert, Shira Gill.As a professional home organiser with clients ranging from students to multi-millionaires, Shira Gill observed that clutter is a universal stress trigger. Over the years she created a signature decluttering and organisation process that promotes sustainability, achieves lasting results, and can be applied to anyone, regardless of their space or lifestyle. Rather than imposing strict rules and limitations, Shira redefines minimalism as having the perfect amount of everything - for you - based on your personal values and the limitations of your space. Now, in Minimalista, Shira shares her complete toolkit for the first time, built around five key steps: Clarify, Edit, Organize, Elevate, and Maintain. Shira teaches that the most important thing you can do is start, and that small victories, achieved one at a time, will snowball into massive transformation. Broken into small, bite-sized chunks, Minimalista makes it clear that if the process is fun and easy to follow, anyone can learn the principles of editing and organisation. The Minimalista Manifesto:· Buy less; live more.· Invest in high quality + solid craftsmanship.· Opt for natural, sustainable materials.· Treat your space + your stuff with respect.· Shop your own home before hitting the stores.· Celebrate life''s little luxuries: fresh flowers, hot water, a good meal with friends.· Try to repair instead of replace.· Embrace negative space and dispose of unwanted items responsibly.· Create a home that supports your personal goals + core values.· Be the gatekeeper of your home.· Say ''no'' to swag, freebies, and hotel samples.· Say ''no'' to excess and ''yes'' to enough.

Esej o typografii - Eric Gill

An Essay on Typography - Eric Gill
Eric Gill''s opinionated manifesto on typography argues that ''a good piece of lettering is as beautiful a thing to see as any sculpture or painted picture''. This essay explores the place of typography in culture and is also a moral treatise celebrating the role of craftsmanship in an industrial age. Gill, a sculptor, engraver, printmaker and creator of many classic typefaces that can be seen around us today, fused art, history and polemic in a visionary work which has been hugely influential on modern graphic design.''Written with clarity, humility and a touch of humour . . . timeless and absorbing'' Paul Rand, The New York Times''His lettering was clear, confident and hugely influential on the development of modern type design. Sound Authorities - Edward J. Gillin
Sound Authorities shows how experiences of music and sound played a crucial role in nineteenth-century scientific inquiry in Britain. In Sound Authorities, Edward J. Gillin focuses on hearing and aurality in Victorian Britain, claiming that the development of the natural sciences in this era cannot be understood without attending to the study of sound and music. During this time, scientific practitioners attempted to fashion themselves as authorities on sonorous phenomena, coming into conflict with traditional musical elites as well as religious bodies. Gillin pays attention to sound in both musical and nonmusical contexts, specifically the cacophony of British industrialization. Sound Authorities begins with the place of acoustics in early nineteenth-century London, examining scientific exhibitions, lectures, spectacles, workshops, laboratories, and showrooms. He goes on to explore how mathematicians mobilized sound in their understanding of natural laws and their vision of a harmonious ordered universe. In closing, Gillin delves into the era’s religious and metaphysical debates over the place of music (and humanity) in nature, the relationship between music and the divine, and the tensions between spiritualist understandings of sound and scientific ones.

Love & Pain - Ben Gillies, Chris Joannou
SHORTLISTED FOR THE ABIA BIOGRAPHY BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD 2024The powerful, untold story of two of the three members of iconic Australian band Silverchair. It all began in Ben Gillies' garage - where three high school kids from Newcastle, New South Wales, created magic with their smash-hit single 'Tomorrow', setting them on a path to domination of the Australian charts, worldwide touring and fame. So much has been written about Silverchair over the years but very little has been said by the band's members. In Love & Pain, drummer Ben Gillies and bass player Chris Joannou retrace their footsteps from childhood friends living across the road from each other, and share their often hilarious, wild and unforgettable stories from the rock 'n' roll spotlight, along with the exhilarating highs and heart-wrenching lows they faced along the way. There was also all the love and pain that came from being in the band: the cost of fame and intense pressure on two teenagers who had no way of preparing for it, and the complex dynamics of navigating friendships with each other and their relationships with friends and family members, the mistakes they made and the successes they cherished. Gillies and Joannou write with vulnerability and raw and blistering honesty, making for an extraordinary account of a band adored by so many.
