Encounter with the Devil - Maya Daniels
There’s no sin in cheating the Devil. Unless, of course, you get caught. I barely escaped with my life, but now I’m stuck in a game where angels lie, demons manipulate, and I’m the prize everyone wants to claim. Turns out, being a hybrid—a mix of angel and demon—makes me valuable. And dangerous. My only shot at survival? The one place I swore I’d never go: Hell. To keep me safe, Eric—Prince of Hell, infuriatingly overprotective, and apparently my mate—is willing to break his biggest promise and face Lucifer himself. But Hell isn’t just fire and brimstone. It’s deception, betrayal, and power plays. And down here, even the Prince of Hell isn’t untouchable. Masks are slipping, alliances are shifting, and I’m running out of time. Because if I don’t figure out who to trust before the walls close in, I won’t just lose my life—I’ll lose my soul. Let the battle begin. Encounter with the Devil is a fast-paced, snark-filled urban fantasy packed with high-stakes action, a fierce heroine who refuses to back down, and a dangerously tempting Prince of Hell. Perfect for fans of supernatural intrigue and slow-burn tension. _________________________________Praise for The Broken Halos Series:? ? ? ? ? Awesome follow-up series! Onto book four!? ? ? ? ? Friend of the Devil - Len Dell'Amico
The inside story of Jerry Garcia and Grateful Dead from one of the few non-band members allowed in the band''s inner circle: filmmaker, Len Dell''Amico. From 1980 to 1995, he witnessed brilliance, love, happy chaos, and pot. Lots of pot. As a friend and a filmmaker, Len Dell’Amico was one of the few non-band members allowed into the inner circle of Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead, and he captured their lives for over 15 years. At a time of tremendous creative growth and record sales, Dell’Amico found himself at Garcia’s side as a trusted voice while Grateful Dead became a force in the 1980s. Using his skills as a multi-camera live video director, the band and Dell’Amico were able to create amazing concert films and music videos. Along the way, Jerry Garcia flashed his genius, eccentricity, generosity of spirit, and emotional depth through his music and relationships with the crew. Friend of the Devil is a rare look at Grateful Dead and how beloved Jerry Garcia was before he passed away at the age of 53.

The Testament of Mary - Colm Tóibín
SHORTLISTED FOR THE MAN BOOKER PRIZE 2013Colm Toibin's The Testament of Mary is the moving story of the Virgin Mary, told by a novelist famous for writing brilliantly about the family. From the author of Brooklyn, in a voice that is both tender and filled with rage, The Testament of Mary tells the story of a cataclysmic event which led to an overpowering grief. For Mary, her son has been lost to the world, and now, living in exile and in fear, she tries to piece together the memories of the events that led to her son's brutal death. To her he was a vulnerable figure, surrounded by men who could not be trusted, living in a time of turmoil and change. As her life and her suffering begin to acquire the resonance of myth, Mary struggles to break the silence surrounding what she knows to have happened. In her effort to tell the truth in all its gnarled complexity, she slowly emerges as a figure of immense moral stature as well as a woman from history rendered now as fully human.Praise for The Testament of Mary:'This is a short book, but it is as dense as a diamond. It is as tragic as a Spanish pieta, but it is completely heretical...Toibin maintains all the dignity of Mary without subscribing to the myths that have accumulated around her' Edmund White, Irish Times'Depicting the harrowing losses and evasions that can go on between mothers and sons...Toibin creates a reversed Pieta: he holds the mother in his arms' Independent 'A beautiful and daring work...it takes its power from the surprise of its language, its almost shocking characterization' Mary Gordon, New York Times.

The Last of the Wine - Mary Renault
''All my sense of the ancient world - its values, its style, the scent of its wars and passions - comes from Mary Renault. Her Theseus novels are perhaps the most exciting of her Greek fictions, and The Last of the Wine the most moving. I turned to writing historical fiction because of something I learned from Renault: that it lets you shake off the mental shackles of your own era, all the categories and labels, and write freely about what really matters to you'' EMMA DONOGHUE''Mary Renault''s portraits of the ancient world are fierce, complex and eloquent, infused at every turn with her life-long passion for the Classics. Her characters live vividly both in their own time, and in ours'' MADELINE MILLERCombining the scholarship of a historian with the imagination of a novelist, Mary Renault masterfully brings the ancient world to life in this page-turning drama of the Peloponnesian War.Alexias, a young Athenian of good family, comes of age during the last phases of the Peloponnesian War. The adult world he enters is one in which the power and influence of his class have been undermined by the forces of war. Alexias finds himself drawn to the controversial teachings of Socrates, following him even though it at times endangers both his own life and his family''s place in society. Among the great teacher''s followers Alexias meets Lysis, and the two youths become inseparable - together they wrestle in the palaestra, journey to the Olympic Games, and fight in the wars against Sparta. As their relationship develops against the background of famine, siege and civil conflict, Mary Renault expertly conveys the intricacies of classical Greek culture.''Mary Renault is a shining light to both historical novelists and their readers. She does not pretend the past is like the present, or that the people of ancient Greece were just like us. She shows us their strangeness; discerning, sure-footed, challenging our values, piquing our curiosity, she leads us through an alien landscape that moves and delights us'' HILARY MANTEL''The most vivid and convincing reconstruction of ancient Greek life that I have ever seen'' Sunday Times

Princes of the Renaissance - Mary Hollingsworthová
A beautifully illustrated history of the Renaissance told through the lives of its most important and influential patrons. ''Exceptionally sumptuous... This vivid history brings to life the vices and virtues of the feuding ruling families of Italy.'' Michael Prodger, The Times ''Full of treasures to be uncovered... A chance to visit a glittering, at times rather gory, world that is different and yet dreamily familiar to our own.'' BBC History RevealedFrom the late Middle Ages, the independent Italian city-states were taken over by powerful families who installed themselves as dynastic rulers. Inspired by the humanists, the princes of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Italy immersed themselves in the culture of antiquity, commissioning palaces, villas and churches inspired by the architecture of ancient Rome, and offering patronage to artists and writers. Many of these princes were related by blood or marriage, creating a web of alliances that held society together but whose tensions sometimes threatened to tear it apart; thus were their lives dominated as much by the waging of war as the nurture of artistic talent. In a narrative that is as rigorous and closely researched as it is accessible and informative, Mary Hollingsworth sets the princes'' aesthetic achievements in the context of the volatile, ever-shifting politics of a tumultuous period of history.

Religion and the Decline of Magic - Sir Keith Thomas
Witchcraft, astrology, divination and every kind of popular magic flourished in England during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, from the belief that a blessed amulet could prevent the assaults of the Devil to the use of the same charms to recover stolen goods. At the same time the Protestant Reformation attempted to take the magic out of religion, and scientists were developing new explanations of the universe. Keith Thomas''s classic analysis of beliefs held on every level of English society begins with the collapse of the medieval Church and ends with the changing intellectual atmosphere around 1700, when science and rationalism began to challenge the older systems of belief.

The Maya Myths - Mallory Matsumoto
The rich and varied stories of the great Maya civilization in one compelling and readable volume. The Maya reigned for almost four millennia and occupied large swathes of what is now southern Mexico and Central America. Their civilization was highly complex, divided into politically fragmented noble houses, which gave rise to a diverse mythology that can vary between groups and retellings. For example, there are three different myths about the origins of the sun and moon. In one of these creation myths, animals and objects rise up to torment humanity, while in another, pots shatter and speak, unleashing demons upon the people.Elsewhere, heroes descend to the ball-court of the underworld, where trees grow fruit in the likeness of severed heads, the ancestors converse with animals, and the Maize God is caught in a perpetual cycle of death and rebirth. To the Maya these were more than fireside tales―these myths formed the foundation of their culture, weaving together their ancestral and primordial pasts into a cohesive and meaningful narrative.Mallory Matsumoto skillfully evokes the vibrancy of Maya culture, from the peak of hieroglyphic tradition in the eighth century CE, through the invasions of the Spanish conquistadors, and up to the present day. The book draws from well-known texts such as the Books of Chilam Balam and the Popol Vuh, Spanish texts, as well as lesser-known sources; images; and Maya oral histories―all reflecting a history of contact and change, rather than a sealed-off past. Illustrated throughout, this volume highlights the rich, varied nature of Maya myths, offering a deeper understanding of the communities that produced these captivating stories.80 illustrations

The Stone Age - Lesley-Ann Jonesová
From Sunday Times bestselling author Lesley-Ann JonesOn 12 July 1962, the Rollin' Stones performed their first-ever gig at London's Marquee jazz club. Down the line, a 'g' was added, a spark was lit and their destiny was sealed. No going back. These five white British kids set out to play the music of black America. They honed a style that bled bluesy undertones into dark insinuations of women, sex and drugs. Denounced as 'corruptors of youth' and 'messengers of the devil', they created some of the most thrilling music ever recorded. Now, their sound and attitude seem louder and more influential than ever. Elvis is dead and the Beatles are over, but Jagger and Richards bestride the world. The Stones may be gathering moss, but on they roll. Yet how did the ultimate anti-establishment misfits become the global brand we know today? Who were the casualties, and what are the forgotten legacies? Can the artist ever be truly divisible from the art? Lesley-Ann Jones's new history tracks this contradictory, disturbing, granitic and unstoppable band through hope, glory and exile, into the juggernaut years and beyond into rock's ongoing reckoning . . . where the Stones seem more at odds than ever with the values and heritage against which they have always rebelled. Good, bad and often ugly, here are the Rolling Stones as never before.

But when her stepfather''s business acquaintance, Henry Ford, invites the family on one of his famous Vagabonds camping tours, she is forced to face the hills once again--primarily in order to reunite with her future fiancé, owner of the land the Vagabonds are using for their campsite, a man she''s only met once before. It is a veritable arranged marriage, but she prefers it that way. Belle isn''t interested in love. She only wants a simple life--a family of her own and the stability of a wealthy man''s pockets. That''s what Worth Delafield has promised to give her and it''s worth facing the mountains again, the reminder of the past, and her poverty, to secure her future. But when the Vagabonds group is invited to tour the unfinished Grove Park Inn and Belle is unexpectedly thrust into a role researching and writing about the building of the inn--a construction the locals are calling The Eighth Wonder of the World--she quickly realizes that these mountains are no different from the ones she once called home. As Belle peels back the facade of Grove Park Inn, of Worth, of the society she''s come to claim as her own, and the truth of her heart, she begins to see that perhaps her part in Grove Park''s story isn''t a coincidence after all. Perhaps it is only by watching a wonder rise from ordinary hands and mountain stone that she can finally find the strength to piece together the long-destroyed path toward who she was meant to be.International bestselling author Joy Callaway returns with a story of the ordinary people behind extraordinary beauty--and the question of who gets to tell their stories.Praise for What the Mountains Remember:"Callaway is back with another insightful rendering of a place and time in history, bringing her trademark attention to detail, warmth, and heart to a story centered around one of the nation''s most beautiful and fabled hotels, the Grove Park Inn in Asheville NC."?--Marybeth Mayhew Whalen, author of ten novels and cofounder of The Book Tide"A stunning portrayal of the building of the Grove Park Inn that reveals not only its grandeur, but also the struggles of the laborers tasked with its construction, Joy Callaway brings the famed Vagabonds to life with immaculate research and rich details in this intriguing, elegantly written historical fiction that readers are going to love!" --Madeline Martin, New York Times Bestseller author of The Keeper of Hidden BooksPerfect for fans of The Only Woman in the Room and A Well-Behaved WomanStand-alone novelIncludes Discussion Questions

Sambuka and the Ramayana Tradition - Aaron Sherraden
According to VÄlmÄ«ki’s Sanskrit RÄmÄyaṇa (early centuries CE), ÅšambÅ«ka was practicing severe acts of austerity to enter heaven. In engaging in these acts as a Śūdra, ÅšambÅ«ka was in violation of class- and caste-based societal norms prescribed exclusively by the ruling and religious elite. RÄma, the hero of the RÄmÄyaṇa epic, is dispatched to kill ÅšambÅ«ka, whose transgression is said to be the cause of a young Brahmin’s death. The gods rejoice upon the Śūdra’s death and restore the life of the Brahmin. Subsequent RÄmÄyaṇa poets almost instantly recognized this incident as a blemish on RÄma’s character and they began problematizing this earliest version of the story. They adjusted and updated the story to suit the expectations of their audiences. The works surveyed in this study include numerous works originating in Hindu, Jain, Dalit and non-Brahmin communities while spanning the period from ÅšambÅ«ka’s first appearance in the VÄlmÄ«ki RÄmÄyaṇa through to the present day. The book follows the ÅšambÅ«ka episode chronologically across its entire history—approximately two millennia—to illuminate the social, religious, legal, and artistic connections that span the entire range of the RÄmÄyaṇa’s influence and its place throughout various phases of Indian history and social revolution.Â

A-Z of Bournemouth - W. A. Hoodless
The seaside town of Bournemouth was founded as a watering place in the early nineteenth century in an area of barren land on the south coast known for smuggling. After developing as a health resort, the railways arrived and the town grew rapidly, becoming a popular destination for visitors. Today, Bournemouth welcomes millions of visitors every year to its beaches and festivals, its two piers – one at Bournemouth and one at Boscombe – and long promenade, and is a cultural and commercial centre of the area. Many of its outstanding Victorian buildings have been preserved and stand alongside art deco and more recent landmark buildings. In A–Z of Bournemouth, author Bill Hoodless delves into the history of the town, from evidence of the earliest settlers in the area to the present day. He highlights well-known historic landmarks such as the Winter Gardens, former home of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, forgotten stories from yesteryear such as a tram tragedy, and the air crash that killed Charles Rolls, co-founder of Rolls-Royce Ltd. He also writes about famous residents and visitors such as Robert Louis Stevenson and digs beneath the surface to uncover some of Bournemouth’s lesser-known facts and its hidden places of interest.

In The Lily Room - Erica Hesketh
Erica Hesketh’s debut collection In the Lily Room tells a story of early motherhood. It examines a new mother’s journey through mental illness, her relationships with her body, her baby and other people, and the often surreal landscape of mothering, against a backdrop of a changing and uncertain world.A dreamlike birth sequence full of eels, foxes and floodwater empties onto a London postnatal ward, where reality sets in. Rudderless and anxious, the new mother writes notes to herself, joins support groups and tries medication. She climbs into myth and prayer, nightmare and song, criss-crossing her neighbourhood with a pram, until she starts to feel better. Hesketh''s poems speak of the many things motherhood can mean, the structures it is made to fit inside. Clear-eyed and full of hard-won love, this a story of one of the most common experiences there is, told in a dazzlingly original way.
