Chamberse zvedla vlna díky vynikajícímu televiznímu seriálu HBO True Detective / Temný případ. První souborné české vydání Chambersovy knihy vychází tomuto zájmu vstříc, kniha však není zajímavá jen jako vzorník motivů z onoho seriálu - zlověstný "Král ve žlutém" či zapomenutá, děsivá říše zvaná Carcosa mají svou vlastní, mrazivou sílu, a Chambers si ve schopnosti evokovat "hrůzu duše" v ničem nezadá s E. A. Poem, z něhož vycházel, či s H. P. Lovecraftem, jehož zase sám výrazně ovlivnil. Deset povídek, shromážděných v této knize, je toho nejlepším důkazem. Robert W. Chambers (1865-1933) byl americký spisovatel a výtvarník; na začátku 90. let 19. století vystudoval malbu v Paříži, kde se také důvěrně obeznámil s moderními uměleckými směry; určující se pro něj stal zejména symbolismus a secese. Jeho nejslavnější dílo, Král ve žlutém, je obecně považováno za klasiku hororového žánru a dočkalo se nesčetných vydání v mnoha jazycích.
