Šmeljov se k ní však nepřipojil a zažil krvavou hrůzovládu maďarského bolševika Bély Kuna, který stál na Krymu v čele regionálního revolučního výboru a ze své pozice přikázal zabít tisíce příslušníků etnických menšin a deset tisíc zajatých bělogvardějců. Během těchto masakrů byl zastřelen i jediný Šmeljovův syn Sergej, pětadvacetiletý důstojník protibolševické Dobrovolnické armády. Zlomený a vyčerpaný Šmeljov roku 1922 opustil Rusko a odjel do Paříže, kde vzniklo jeho nejlepší dílo, autobiografická novela Slunce mrtvých. Próza Slunce mrtvých je nářkem nad zánikem Ruska, Šmeljov v ní vypráví o zpustošeném Krymu, o mašinerii zabíjení za občanské války, o každodenním nerovném boji s hladem těch, kteří přežili řádění bolševiků, o postupném umírání přátel. Slunce mrtvých je rovněž nelítostnou obžalobou viníků této katastrofy. Viníci však nejsou jen krutí bolševici, zobrazovaní jako prostí lidé, kteří mají hlavy popletené několika bolševickými frázemi. Viníkem je ve Šmeljovových očích i Evropa, která to celé dopustila, vydala Rusko napospas zkáze a sama si dál žije svým poklidným životem v blahobytu, zatímco mrtvé slunce spaluje poslední zbytky života a starého Ruska v kdysi rozjásané krymské krajině. Slunce mrtvých záhy po svém vydání v roce 1923 vzbudilo velký ohlas a bylo přeloženo do osmi jazyků; česky vyšlo v roce 1926.
