První svazek publicistiky Jiřího Weila představuje práce od autorových počátků až po odjezd do Moskvy v létě 1933, kam byl Weil v pověření Komunistické strany Československa vyslán, aby tam pracoval jako překladatel a lektor základních děl marxismu-leninismu. Ve Spisech Jiřího Weila, které tímto svazkem zahajujeme, jsou publicistice vyhrazeny tři svazky. Svým záběrem usilují postihnout veškeré polohy původního autorství Weilova novinového působení. Stranou tohoto obsáhlého výboru zůstaly pouze texty, v nichž převažuje zřetel zpravodajský a referentský. Než Weil publikoval svůj první román, měl za sebou bezmála dvacet let rozsáhlé novinářské činnosti, která je svými tématy a v jistém výseku i tvárnými postupy s pozdější beletristickou tvorbou úzce propojena. V rozvrhu Spisů Jiřího Weila proto publicistiku nevydělujeme do samostatné divize , která následuje za pracemi beletristickými, jak to můžeme vidět na uspořádání celkových řad většiny spisovatelových vrstevníků (bratři Čapkové, Nezval, Poláček, Seifert, Weiner), ale tři knihy statí rozmisťujeme v číslování SJW mezi svazky beletristické, jako č. 1, 3 a 8 (podobně, jako to rozvrhli pořadatelé nedokončených spisů Neumannových z let 1962-1984). Jiří Weil ke knižně pořádané vlastní publicistice nikdy nepřikročil (jen v roce 1924 vydal dvě brožury a v roce 1937 k nim přibyla útlá kniha reportáží, přičemž dvě z těchto tří publikací zahrnovaly i předtím časopisecky otiskované články). Lze jen uhadovat, zda si takovou zdrženlivost uložil proto, že k nějaké dílčí sumě nebyl od třicátých let 20. století až do konce let padesátých vydavatelsky vlastně nikdy vhodný čas, anebo kvůli tomu, že své psaní pro noviny nepokládal za tak podstatné, aby je chtěl šířit knižně, resp. kvůli tomu, že od poloviny třicátých let směřoval víc a víc k osobitému projevu beletristickému.
